Mad Hatter Costumes Make a Comeback

Mad Hatter costumes are generating a buzz this year. Why the sudden interest in a character from a book written in 1865? This Mad Hatter costume craze may have something to do with an upcoming film based on Lewis Carroll's book "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland."
Movie theaters are currently showing trailers for director Tim Burton's "Alice in Wonderland" film, which is set to be released in March 2010. The film stars many Hollywood A-listers, including Anne Hathaway as the White Queen and Johnny Depp as the Mad Hatter himself.
In addition to "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland," the Mad Hatter also appeared in Carroll's sequel to the book, "Through the Looking Glass." There are several real-life men who were rumored to have been Carroll's inspiration for the Mad Hatter character. One of them, Theophilus Carter, invented an alarm clock that dumped sleepers out of bed. Another, Roger Crab, was a soldier who, after suffering a blow to the head, started a business as a hatter and gained a reputation for being a little bit mad.
Mad Hatter costumes can range from a simple top hat and tails to the more elaborate store-bought creations featuring orange coats and ridiculously tall hats. Mad Hatter costumes are also available for children as well as in a "sexy" version for women.
