Young Phillies Fans Give Up World Series Tickets To Help Others
What boys would give up the chance to go to the World Series?
That would be Alex and Ben Burman of Wallingford, Pa. The two middle schoolers and Phillies fans had tickets to Game 4 of the World Series. They had great seats too -- Diamond Club seats worth about $3,500, according to StubHub.com.
Still, they went to the World Series last year. And the money they could raise by selling the tickets could do a lot of good in the world.
So Alex and Ben -- along with their little brothers Leo and Sam -- decided to sell their family's five tickets and give the money to Drexel Neumann Academy, a Catholic school in Chester, Pa. It seemed fitting. They originally got the tickets from their Uncle Steve Burman, a member of the school's board of directors.
The boys' father, Marty Burman, didn't even wait for the tickets to sell. He cut a $5,000 donation from his Burman's Health Food Store in Brookhaven, Pa., to the school.
"With the kids giving up their tickets, and us making a donation to the school, maybe it will inspire others to do other things." Marty told the Daily News in Delaware County.
Alex and Ben attend Strath Haven Middle School in Wallingford. "It makes me feel proud, just knowing I'm doing a good deed," Ben told NBC News in Philadelphia. "What's more important, some kid going to school for 200 days of the year or going to a Phillies game for two hours?" echoed Alex.
Tuition at the school is $2,200 per student per year, so the $5,000 could be pay for two students.
"I think it's beyond generous," the school's president, Sister Maggie Gannon, OSF, told NBC News in Philadelphia about the donation. "We hear so often about Philadelphia sports fans, and to me, this is what Philadelphia really is."
