In a heart-stopping split second, an Australian mother watches as her 6-month-old son rolls onto a train track and under an oncoming train -- and escapes with just a scratch.
It could happen to any parent -- you release the brake on the stroller to prepare to board the train, and it rolls away from you. For Shweta Verma, a 29-year-old mother and dentist who lives in Melbourne, it is a nightmare that keeps replaying in her head and on TV, thanks to a surveillance camera that captured the entire terrifying episode on film.
Verma told Today's Matt Lauer about the terrifying moment when her son, Saurish, rolled onto the tracks as a train sped through the station. The video shows her horror as she helplessly watches her baby disappears under it.
"There was this moment I thought I should jump," Verma told Lauer. "But instead of making that suicidal move, I just thought for a second that I should have a look - what has happened to him. I just wanted to have a look, how is he."
Her baby, who was strapped into his stroller, was found beneath the train by 18-year-old student Aaron Dryden: "I was [in] complete shock," Verma said. "As soon as the train stopped, I ran toward the platform where it stopped, and there was this young guy who came and offered to help. And he was going to get down off the platform and then, I told him that I want to come along."
That's when Verma heard the welcome sound of her child's cries. The stroller lost its wheels in the accident but was otherwise intact -- and Saurish was still strapped into the safety harness. His mother struggled to free him, and then finally joined her baby under the train to set him free. The child suffered just a scratch on his head, and after an examination at a hospital was declared healthy.
Verma, who credits the safety harness on the stroller with saving her son's life, shakily said that she often relives the moment when she thought she'd lost her baby forever, but that her already strong faith in a higher power has deepened.
"He is destined to do something, something good, something great in his life," she said. "That is why God is there...Now I don't let [Saurish] out of my sight."

Praise god that the baby is ok, but don't blame him for making the stroller roll on the tracks?

I am so greatful that we will not be ultimatley judged by our peers, but that a loving Father in Heaven knows the truth and the intent of our hearts He will forgive quickly and bind up the wounds that are there. This woman is already tormented by what happened. Can we not recognize the miracle and send our positive energy her way?
I wish you peace and love at this difficult time!

Every person on here, especially mothers/fathers, Spewing their garbage about how this woman pushed the stroller or in some way did this on purpose should be ashamed of their downright rediculous, backwards, thinking. I only hope that when something horrible like this happens to you (and since it was CLEARLY an accident) it could! You arent treated as poorly as this woman is being treated. Did you even watch the tape?! Absolutely rediculous.

God?
God?
Are you serious?
A God would have prevented the stroller from rolling off....
There is no God....
Open your eyes....

i think you should re watch it the only thing she did wrong that i saw inn the video was not keep ahold of the stroller what i saw was the baby was pushing the stroller and when the stroller hit the edge the baby and stroller went over the edge

BS. She was watching the train approach, and then slipped as she went for the stroller. The woman is clearly distraught about it still. This is not some sicko trying to rid herself of her kid.

You do realize that the clip is in SLOW MOTION, right? It was about 3 seconds before she reacted on the clip, which in real life was probably LESS THAN 1 SECOND! I am reading some of these HEARTLESS comments, and I am shocked. Could you people not see the SADNESS in her eyes during the interview? She was about to jump onto the tracks to try to get her baby! The train nearly hit her before she pulled back! Even the investigators said she did nothing wrong. She seems like a good, caring mother. And you heartless people leaving these horrible comments about how she intentionally pushed her baby onto the tracks (even in the clip she didnt even touch it, it rolled off because she thought she had the brake on but she didnt) or that she needs to have her baby taken away are just evil people and I pray that God can have mercy on your souls. I'm not even a parent, infact I'm only 13, and I have more sense than some of you heartless probable adults.

Agreed. Who the hell leaves the breaks off on their stroller on a windy platform? And who the hell takes that long to react to their son roll away into the path of an oncoming train?

It seems like the mother almost allows it ,she hears the train coming, she only reacts when it is obviously to late. Very strange, would not doubt that she tried to kill the baby, better luck next time.
Christopher Kidwell 11-03-2009 @ 8:21PM
The sad thing is that some people were saying that she did this on purpose.... I don't think so, to be blunt. I have watched the tape and enhanced the .avi version posted online in some places, and it just looks like she accidentally bumped the stroller, thought that the brake was on, and didn't realize until MUCH later (a few seconds) that the stroller was moving.

I wonder if that student was an angel in disguise and he went under the train and layed his hands on the baby and the baby was made whole. It can happen! The Bible says that sometimes we interact with angels without even knowing.

i would like to beleave so. I could use an angle now
karebare38 11-04-2009 @ 6:41PM
yes, i believe that could be true. besides someone else on this comment board said they thought they saw a white shadow, wow. that definitely sounds like an angelic being saving that cute adorable little thing! I am sooo glad he's okay .....Yeahhhh. it's amazing with the kind of stuff people can actually begin to say, to me it just sounds so cold and almost souless. It amazes me.- I will watch this video over again to see if I notice a white shadow there. and you know, it seems video cams may catch things like this, more than the human eye could, what do you think? and, how does that work?? the camera being able to capture ghostly activity over the human eye!
