In a heart-stopping split second, an Australian mother watches as her 6-month-old son rolls onto a train track and under an oncoming train -- and escapes with just a scratch.
It could happen to any parent -- you release the brake on the stroller to prepare to board the train, and it rolls away from you. For Shweta Verma, a 29-year-old mother and dentist who lives in Melbourne, it is a nightmare that keeps replaying in her head and on TV, thanks to a surveillance camera that captured the entire terrifying episode on film.
Verma told Today's Matt Lauer about the terrifying moment when her son, Saurish, rolled onto the tracks as a train sped through the station. The video shows her horror as she helplessly watches her baby disappears under it.

God?
Are you serious?
A God would have prevented the stroller from rolling off....
There is no God....
Open your eyes....

She could barely speak a few minutes into the interview; I am a mother of 4 and a grandmother of two w/ one on the way. I saw and felt her pain! God knows, and He made everything OK.

H said...My heart felt comments go out to this mother, as I can relate to this story. I witnessed my 3 year old get hit by a car while on her trike, and then fly 60 feet in the air. I re-live it every day, as I had the same feeling. The feeling of whether or not my child was dead or alive. She is alive and normal after spending 5 days in the hospital. Go ahead, make rude comments about how the mother is not watching the child, the same as you did for this lady.

Jason said...Thank God the baby is safe and sound! Watching that video, there's no way anyone could survive a train running over the stroller, no matter how sturdy it is. I'll bet if it had came to rest a metre in either direction, the baby wouldn't be crying, he'd be dead. Thank goodness the mom didn't try to rescue the baby as the train was moving, otherwise she would've been killed as well.

Arrive on time and early so you never skip important safety tips. Invest in a solid stroller that has good brakes. Strollers with the bar handle across are easy to grasp versus the stick handles. It was truly a blessing and a lesson to all. Never leave your child unattended -not for a second. Your life can change in a second.

Laura said...Everyone's reactions are different. When something is going to happen, your action time response is not always fast. People just stare at the tragedy coming at ya, then react, time lapsed about ohhhhh 5 secs. You cannot judge this woman for her reaction, because there were alot of split second decisions she was making in those few seconds she had to work with. I am soooo glad that baby is fine.

Ochenta said...First off - thank goodness the baby is ok.
Secondly - that's why they have breaks on strollers. She had already pulled the stroller back one time...some would see that as a sign...

Brudda K said...incredible!...sheer luck...and the Grace, of something bigger than anything we can comprehend.
Or...let's not forget, the non-believers side of it all;
The train , the stroller, timing, etc...nothing devine about it, sheer luck. It looks to me, the lady didn't have any idea what happened until it was too late. She did not do anything wrong. Poor thing!
Let this be a lesson for the designers of the platform. Why the hell does it lean toward the train in the first place?...that's insane?
Some crazy M.F. designed it that way. Oh...yeah...so water won't go toward the waiting area. O.k. yeah RIGHT!
I think the designers of the platform did it on purpose!!!
Yeeeeeeeeah! eeeevil architech!!!....he planned it that way. He secretly said to himself, "I'll make a slow decline toward the train so someday a baby in a stroller will roll off the platform, and into an oncoming train and get smashed to smithereens. What a glorious tragedy...or better yet...a bum homeless person with a cart...only they'd a jumped in to save it.
I happen to be homeless...(yeah RIGHT)...that was a little sick homeless person humour.

Brudda K said...sorry I looked and looked...no white shadow or mysterious ghostly thing trying to push or stop the stroller from going over. What I did see was the mother reaction at the second she realized what was happening. If she didn't have cheap leather soles on her shoes...she may have caught the thing before it made it to the edge. Chk it out...
She burns rubber and gets nowhere for a split second or two...and that would have been enough to get control of the situation. I recognize that "adrenal bolt" when your shoes won't go where you want them to....

troubled said...What the heck is wrong with some of you?! The woman came close to losing her child; and in a most horrible way too! Can't we just thank God that his hand was not far from the baby or her, instead of passing judgment on how we think the stroller rolled away or what we think of her parenting skills? Heck, even the 13 year old poster thought you haters were being unreasonable. I for one am extremely glad that this mother did not have to suffer the loss of her child, especially in that way. Think about it; one day you're goin to make a mistake that seems intentional and people are going to be wondering about you, and you will be left having to defend yourself...it was a mistake!
