Vigilante Saves Kids From Parent Abduction

A globe-trotting vigilante retrieves children from foreign countries? Why would you need one?
Say you marry someone and you have children. You get divorced. There's a custody battle. You win. Your ex-spouse refuses to accept the decision. He or she takes the children and flees overseas to a country that doesn't recognize your custody rights.
What do you do?
This is not a hypothetical question for thousands of parents who go through this exact scenario every year. Their options are limited.
One option, however, is Gus Zamora.
He goes to other countries and gets kids back -- one way or another. "There are lots of ways to recover a child," he said in an interview with ParentDish. "There's no one way."
The Tampa Bay, Fla., resident and former Army Ranger prefers to do things nice and legal. If he can work through a foreign court system, fine. Failing that, he might try to bully foreign officials with threats -- or at least bluffs -- of crushing media attention.
As a last resort, Zamora said, he will grab the child and run. "That's when you've run out of other options," he said.
Remember, these are children whose American parents have legal custody of them. Zamora said he reviews cases to make sure his clients are within their rights. The kidnapping parents can try to continue the custody battle. "But they're going to have to do it on American soil," he said.
Zamora is one of the few professionals who goes Rambo to get kids back. There might be others, he said, but not nearly as many as the dozens upon dozens of scam artists who say they can help parents, but end up doing nothing.
"The experts will come crawling out of the woodwork," he said, "but that's what they'll be doing, they'll be crawling."
Zamora has been getting kids out of foreign countries for 18 years. So far, he said, he has recovered 55 children.
And he is certainly more aggressive about it than more official channels. U.S. State Department officials don't like to meddle in international custody disputes, Zamora said. They have bigger diplomatic fish to fry and don't want to endanger other issues for the sake of what amounts to family conflicts. Nonetheless, Zamora said, it's amazing how many people come to him after hush-hush referrals from government types.
Other child-protection organizations offer little more than sympathy, Zamora said.
Not him. He offers action, which comes with a hefty price tag that varies from client to client. And he doesn't like clients who question his methods. "The client can be your worst enemy," he said in an interview this month in Atlantic Monthly.
Many foreign governments are notoriously indifferent to the custodial rights of American parents, Zamora said. One of them is Japan. Christopher Savoie of Franklin, Tn., found that out when he went to retrieve his children from his ex-wife and wound up in jail.
Japanese law almost universally favors the mother in child custody cases, regardless of circumstances. There's another factor involved in Savoie's case, Zamora said. "Japan is a real tough nut to crack," Zamora said. "They're racist and they don't care about anything except what they think are the interests of their own people."
Germany and France are also difficult, he said. "It's terrible, but that's the reality of it," he added.
Unfortunately, Zamora said, his business is booming as long as there are custody battles over international borders.
"I wish the system worked, but the fact that it doesn't work means I'll be working," he said on his Web site.
"It's kind of a shame."

Sarah said...thats unfair to call the japanese racist. I do not agree with what happened to Chris but if anybody read the whole story he didn't act the right way buy kidnapping them back.
Not all Japanese people are racists especially towards white people. Japan just has problems accepting other cultures because of how strict theirs is. So I believe it is unfair to call Japan itself racist.
My husband is Japanese and I live in Japan and never experienced racism ever.

Can you honestly describe "your feelings" about a country that is totally withholding your children from you?

FaceInTheCrowd said...This man is badass! The "Rambo of Kidnapped Kids!"
People who have the nerve to call this racist are ignoring the section of the article where it states that Zamora himself takes great pains to ensure that the parent he is recovering the child for has legal custody! He never states it one way or the other as to which country treats children best; his interests lies in which parent has been legally awarded the child!
If you want to cry racist, then aim it at the court system that awards the child to a specific parent without doing the research to determine which parent would take best care of said child!
I'd like to think that if the parent is an obvious scumbag, that he'd ignore the guy (or woman) and simply refuse said case!
Remember, not all of these stories are about mothers fleeing with children, some include fathers taking their children away from the mothers too! These are people who blatantly ignored the legal system and fled to countries that would not recognize the court decisions of our nation! That should tell you something right there!
If it was a woman fleeing an abusive spouse, then blame the system for legally appointing the abuser the keeper of the child!

I CONTACTED EVERYONE THAT I THOUGHT WAS SOMEON AND LITTLE OR NOTHING WAS DONE , EXPECT THEY MADE SURE THEY VIOLATED MY CHILDS RIGHT TO BE PROTECTED, AND VIOLATED MY PARENTAL RIGHTS TO PROTECT MY CHILD FROM ABUSE AND NEGLECT! I SPENT YEARS CONTACTING THE MEDIA AND THEY DIDN'T DO SQUAT! NEITHER DID THE DHS, ALL I CAN SAY IS , FROM NOW ON , IF I HAVE ANOTHER CHILD AND THE SO CALLED LEGAL SYSTEM WANTS TO TAKE IT FROM ME, THEY'LL DO IT OVER MY DEAD BODY!!!!!!!!!NO ONE FKS WITH MY KIDS OR FAMILY. ADDITIONALLY , AFTER I FILED COMPLAINTS AGAINST THE JUDGE , AND EVERYONE ELSE THAT WAS ENVOLVED IN THE CONSPRACY TO CONCEAL THE ABUSE AND NEGLECT OF MY CHILD, THE MOTHERS BOY FRIEND RAPED A 3 YR OLD GIRL. ALL I CAN SAY IS, IF YOU FEEL YOUR CHILD IS IN DANGER FROM WHOEVER HAS CUSTODY, LEGAL OR NOT, IN MY OPINION, DO WHAT YOU HAVE TO DO TO PROTECT YOUR CHILD , EVEN IF IT MEANS MOVING TO THE NORTH POLE , BECAUSE, IN MY EXPERIENCE, THE SYSTEM COULD CARE LESS ABOUT MY KIDS.

If you haven't lived it....you have no idea. All parental abductions are not identical in detail, but the pain is the same.
This is problem being addressed at very high levels...even as your reading this!
Stanger abductions get instant media, police, FBI, NCMEC..... then you have parental abductions, which far out number stranger abductions, but they are considered a domestic dispute, NO MEDIA, POLICE...etc
But you do get the privledge of lawyer fees, court costs, private investagtors and numerous other costs. Plus international or US parental abductors the majority of the time never pay...not a day in jail or fees?
I have lived it...my girls are home now. I lost everything, but I have my babys home and that is better then money!

I just hope that this doesn't result in the extinction of all good samaritans. Zamora is a man for hire. Let's hope none of his (foolish) opposers need his services.
P.S. I see there's another Ryan amongst us, with common sense, and understanding. Another smart man. Let this be contagious. Thanks Ryan!

Tom said...Dear Tom Henderson,
You may want to run a grammar check on your article before you post it online; this is simply embarrassing. Here's the first example: "A globe-trotting vigilante to retrieves children from foreign countries?"
This one is another keeper: "There are might be others, he said, but not nearly as many as the dozens upon dozens of scam artists to say they can help parents, but end up doing nothing."
"There are might?" Really?
Two more that are fun:
"Unfortunately, Zamora said, his business as booming as long as there are custody battles over international borders."
"I wish the system worked, but the fact that it doesn't works means I'll be working,"
I cannot believe that you one, made it into a working position with these types of flaws, and two, onto AOL's home page for a majority of the world to read. It's an interesting article minus the flaws. They were so plentiful that it was a complete distraction. The subject is the only thing that made the article worth reading. Obviously your lack of care for your subject and this article in terms of preparation demonstrates that YOU should not be in this field.

Teachers aren't paid enough, or given the right material to teach. Parents aren't allowed to disipline their kids like they could when I was growing up. The country that won WW2 was a generation raised with a belt or a paddle, and church on Sunday.
