Recall: Young Artist Easels Violate Lead Standards
Filed under: Alerts & Recalls
Recall of Young Artist Easels, sold by MacPherson's/Art Alternatives. Credit: CPSC
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, the company has put out a voluntary recall, asking consumers to take the easels away from their kids until a replacement chalkboard can be sent to them.
The easels were sold mostly at art supply shops and online for about $75 between July 2004 and July of this year. Named Young Artist Easels, they were sold by MacPherson's doing business as Art Alternatives and manufactured in China.
The original packaging has the item number AA13301, and the UPC number is 082435133010. The recall applies only to easels with a chalkboard on one side and a whiteboard on the other.
The National Institutes of Health warn that lead poisoning is especially dangerous in kids. Even low levels of lead have been linked to lower IQ scores in kids, while higher levels are linked to anemia, muscle weakness and brain damage.
Parents can call MacPherson's at 866-319-5335 between 8 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. Pacific time, Monday through Friday for a replacement, or e-mail them at recall@macphersonart.com. To fill out a form to have a replacement chalkboard sent your way, visit the MacPherson's Web site.

LS said......because we all know how much children just love LICKING chalk boards....
The CPSC needs to just sit down and shut up for a while. They're getting to be a joke, and pretty soon, we're going to have a "Cry Wolf" situation, where there really is a *good* reason for a recall, and nobody is going to listen, because they go crazy over this stupid stuff.

James said..."LS". you must be from China. The Chinese have a habit of sending us contiminated products. We need to stop buying anything made in China and stop shopping at Wal Mart because most of their stuff comes from China. "LS" children do some of the darndess things. They do lick chalk boards or lick their fingers to wet it then use it to wipe the chalk boards then wet their fingers again. I've seen them do this. The CPSC don't do enough. This item started coming into our country in July 2004 and we are just hearing about it now!!! Give me a freaking you idiot.

CLM said...This is why I buy nothing made in China. Some kids DO lick chalkboards. Others scratch on them with their fingers, and later put their fingers in their mouth. Some kids lick chalk. There is more than one way to get lead into a kid's system. Further, not every child who comes into contact with these things is going to be of an age to use them appropriately. Plenty of kids have younger siblings, and said siblings may well be of an age to be in an oral phase. Then there are kids like mine who seem to think it doesn't exist unless it's been mouth-tested.

amoozed said...Don't the people who outsource products provide technical specifications for the products they buy? Is this a case of the US company failing to establish a specification to get a cheaper price, an evil manufacturer who deliberately poisons people or a failed import inspection policy?
By the way, the computer you typed your comment on came from China!

CLM said...Actually, amoozed, there are computers made in places other than China.
I dealt with China and its production issues for nearly a decade in my job, which is why Chinese products aren't allowed in my home. A company can provide all of the specifications it wants, there is no way to guarantee they are followed. You may recall a minister in the Party was executed not too long ago over tainted products that killed a number of people. The problem is so bad that one of the first things Chinese people do as soon as they can afford it is to buy products not made in China. If the Chinese won't buy made in China products, you certainly won't find me doing so.

Buzz said...when will we learn? STOP buying from foreign countries. When we buy from foreign countries we put our neighbors, family, and ourselves out of work as well as supporting foreign workers and supplying America with inferior and at times dangerous products. STOP BUYING FOREIGN GOODS IF AT ALL POSSIBLE.

People keep buying the shit then these importers keep bringing it into the country and getting rich at our children's expense. I will pay a little more and buy America instead of shit from China. I don't shop at Walmart. When Sam started up Walmart everthing was made in the USA. He is probably doing flips in his grave now watching what his stores have become. This all comes from ignorant people that keep buying the Chinese shit. When you all don't have a job just remember China's economy is thriving.

It's the fault of greedy manufacturers from the US who sent all our factories over to China. We couldn't buy something made in the US if we tried.
Even garlic is shipped from over there to our grocery stores. It's hard to believe that it costs less for a grocer to buy garlic from China which is bought, shipped and put into stores for less money than if they purchased from a gardener in their own community!!! It's just unbelievable!!!

Julie said...First of all you can complain all you want about things manufactured in China, but with the amount of our national debt to them, you better get used to the idea. Remember all the debt we have incurred in China merely ensures their ability to ship products here in trade. So if you really want to make a change, stand up to congress and the administration and tell them no more debt to China. Otherwise, accept the fact that most of these issues have been around for decades, and the only reason they are being pointed out is because of people wanting to harm trade with China. You see everything is cause and effect. We take money from China, they give us products. What will happen when we no longer accept products from China, we may just have to pay all those debts off faster, which as a nation we cannot afford to do.

If our country chose to continue to do business with these murders knowing they are sending poison to us and our babys every time we turn around, can't we read? We can't see that"made in China", boycott the heck out of them, lets pass a statement of our own that we are not going to take it any more, we are the Government or have we forgotton that? As long as we allow our children to talk us to buying these things, and follow like sheep then we have nothin to complain about, tell the kids to shut up and our importers NO MORE. Everytime that crap comes in we gt poiseded, it doesn't have to be right in our own home, it is poisening byproxy.
