Exersaucers: Entertainment Centers for Babies

Filed under: Baby Essentials, Toys, Gear Guides: Babies

Exersaucers are stationary activity centers that encourage babies' muscle development and coordination skills while having fun.

Parents place a child in the exersaucer, which supports the child as she stands with her feet barely touching the exersaucer's floor mat. The baby can then spin around, rock side to side, bounce up and down and play with the attached toys without moving from their secure space.

Before buying an exersaucer, parents should make sure the equipment has several height adjustments that will grow with their baby. A seat that is able to spin 360 degrees will keep your child entertained longer because she will be able to see more of the world around her. Exersaucers with various attached toys in many colors and shapes that are made from various textures are also more likely to mesmerize your child. Toys that make sounds or light up also stimulate development.

Although there are many exersaucers on the market, a couple of good choices are the Evenflo ExerSaucer SmartSteps Active Learning Center and the Graco Baby Einstein Discover & Play Activity Center. Both are recommended by Consumer Reports.

However, like with any baby toy, there are some important safety issues to consider. Never leave an infant alone in an exersaucer, always use the activity system's restraints and keep it away from stairs, fireplaces, ovens and other dangerous areas of your home. Evenflo has a complete list of exersaucer safety tips.

Once you choose an exersaucer, find other baby essentials.
