Richard had denied on national television that the incident was fabricated, so why the change of heart? "Balloon Mom," Mayumi Heene, doesn't want to be deported to Japan, according to Coloradoan.com.
Heene family lawyer David Lane released a statement saying that Mayumi Heene plans to plead guilty to "false reporting to authorities," while hubby Richard Heene will plead guilty to "attempting to influence a public servant."
Mayumi's charge is a misdemeanor, Richard's is a felony. Lane further explained that the Hennes cut a deal with prosecutors because "Mayumi Heene is a citizen of Japan, so a felony conviction would result in her deportation." If she commits a misdemeanor, she can stay.
Lane added, "It is supremely ironic that law enforcement has expressed such grave concern [for] the welfare of the children, but it was ultimately the threat of taking the children's mother from the family and deporting her to Japan which fueled this deal."
The formerly Hennes will enter guilty pleas in court on Friday and will be sentenced next month; according to Lane's statement, the sentences will be in the range of 60-90 days in jail.
