Diabetic Student Wins Fight For Extra Gym Classes

Jack Laughlin will start middle school every day with gym class.
What might be a nightmare for other middle schoolers is a dream come true for the 11-year-old Exton, Pa., student and his family. Jack has diabetes and as we reported earlier, he and his parents, David and Cathy Laughlin, argued he needed daily gym classes to recover from his post-breakfast sugar high.
Students at Lionville Middle School usually get gym classes two out of every six days. They spend the rest of their mornings in music and reading skills classes.
School officials initially said there was no compelling medical evidence to rearrange the schedule for Jack and he could get the exercise he needs through a school walking club and intramural athletics.
Now officials have changed their minds.
"We have reached a resolution that both sides can agree on," said district spokeswoman Patricia McGlone in an e-mail Thursday. The Philadelphia Inquirer reports that school officials received a letter Wednesday from Jack's physician, Martha Dechert Zeger, which quotes from and supports a letter from Gary Scheiner, a diabetes specialist who works with the sixth-grader.
"Because Jack takes insulin throughout the day and night, it is important that he engage in physical activity on a consistent daily basis," Zeger said in her letter. "Daily physical education class can and should be used to provide such activity."
When district officials failed to give Jack the classes they requested, the Laughlins filed a complaint under Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973. The federal law requires school districts to give disabled students the same educational opportunities as their non-disabled classmates.
"The district complies with all the requirements of Section 504," McGlone said in her e-mail. "We do our best to work with our families to provide our students with the best education possible."
Cathy Laughlin is pleased for her son.
"I think his day is going to be set up a whole lot better," she told the Inquirer.

Like many others have said already, there is a BIG difference between type 1(child) and type 2 (usually adults). The two different types are treated completely differently. Why don't you do a little research on how insulin works in children before opening your mouths and complaining about something that you have NO idea about.

kayleesmum said...Exactly what I said earlier! I love your comment! :) My daughter has type 1. She's a super athlete and gets post-breakfast highs as well. It takes about 2 hours for the insulin to catch up to her breakfast.

lin said...some of you don't get it. Type 1 diabetic children have to eat at certain times and eat a certain amt. of carbs and need exercize. Their bloodsugar can get high if they re getting sick or stressed even if they don't eat. if they get too low they can pass out , go into coma or die. If it gets too high they can get really sick or go into a coma and die.
It is a life threatening struggle every day for a diabetic child. If exercizing every morning after a scheduled meal with a required amt of carbs works for that child then thank goodness they have found something that works because it is very hard to find something that works. I have a diabetic grandchild and you sleep with one eye open for fear they will have a dangerous blood sugar problem in the nite.

Lisa said...You have valid points, but I believe this is something that needs to be dealt with at home. This child needs to learn how to take care of himself. His family needs to adapt to his needs and teach him long term healthy habits. Putting the responsibility on the school won't help him in the long run. The whole family should change their morning routine. Eat earlier, get ready for the day, and then do some exercise together. They should do this in the evening as well. The boy won't learn healthy habits simply by going to gym class. It won't teach him the self discipline he will need later in life. It is an easy fix for the family, but it's temporary and in the long run, it will hurt him, not help him.

Mallenroh said...I don't see why it would be such an issue to accommodate this child's needs, they would just have to re-arrange his schedule so he didn't miss any other classes. . .
my middle school had PE every day for everyone and my high school had ODD days and EVEN days so you had 7 periods but only 4 classes, you had your ODD day classes (periods 1,3,5, and 7) and your EVEN day periods, (2, 4, 6, and 7), seventh period met 5 days a week so some kids had PE 7 days a week and then everyone else alternated and every week the schedule flipped so if one Monday was an ODD day, the following would be an EVEN day so if you only had PE twice one week, you had it 3 times the following week
Diabetes is tricky, a bunch of my friends has it and my granma has it too and even w/her type 2 diabetes (more age-related then physical shape-related), exercise helps her to manage her insulin and kick-start her metabolism and while I'm not diabetic, I can say that a good dose of exercise in the morning really helps me stay focused throughout my whole day.
I gotta give the parents kudos, not just b/c they're trying to take care of their son, but also for encouraging physical activity, if more parents were so adamant about physical activity, obesity wouldn't be such an issue in today's society

Harby said...How about getting the kid up an extra 45 minutes earlier in the morning, giving him a diabetically correct breakfast, and then having him do a workout at home? Why is it up to the school to accomodate this?

How about you go to bed (like maybe NOW?) and get up in the morning 45 minutes earlier and do your "exercise" to go research the topic before you post more idiotic comments like "diabetically correct" good grief!
This is precisely what I was talking about!

Robin said...I am a teacher, am a type 1 diabetic on an insulin pump, and the parent of a type 1 diabetic child on an insulin pump.
I am amazed at the lack of knowledge of diabetes in the community and in the schools! Because of this ignorance, we have many contributing their "solutions" for the boy and for the school!
There are many people on this comment forum who are passing judgement on an issue they have absolutely NO CLUE about!
Until any of you have been through what this boy, his parents, and the school are dealing with, you should simply shut up!!!!
I know that the boy has a right to his "free and appropriate public education" just like every other child in the United States, and the school is federally bound to provide it. If that is a problem, then perhaps you should take your complaints to Congress and leave alone the ones who are doing what needs to be done for their/yyour children.

lawnjack8 said...This has to do with educational opprotunities? If the court defines PE to be educational and can find the district to be at fault for not providing the same opprotunity as other students then ok I can see that. However I would like to know what specific strictly educational value this child is obtaining by taking this extra class. I can see the argument that it helps with his learning for the rest of the day, but tell me, can't we just have the child wake up earlier and eat sooner, and run/play in the morning at home b4 school.

Lora said...Evidently it is the school district that is messed up here. I have a normal 12 year old that goes to middle school and has gym every day of the week. That is what I had growing up and that is still the way it is. Exton, Pa needs to get with it and change their school program. So obvious they are lacking support for healthy living for children. Board members must be all overweight pigs who think this is adequate for children of their district.

Lippy Lemurian said...I think the PE is wonderful! However, no shower should be required, as it could promote an adverse diabetic coma. This, of course, would then require that all students be schooled in separate classrooms because of body odor issues. More teachers would then have to be hired; with PE certification, of course. This would lead to......................... More classrooms..........more schools...............more money.....higher taxes........spoiled kids.......bigger insulin factories.......higher employment......even more taxes.....etc.

this is classic case of individuals trying to blame some one else for thier stupidity if the boy is diabetic dont feed him so much sugar at breakfast there are enough low sugar alternatives so his blood sugar wont spike that high and let him exercise before school dont make the school change just because his parents dont want the responsability for thier own child
REALLY????? I AM A DIABETIC AND I DO GET AS MUCH EXERCISE AS I CAN. ALSO IT IT ISNT THE HIGH SUGAR FOODS THAT CAUSE HIM TO NEED THE EXTRA P.E. CLASS IT IS THE AMOUNT OF INSULIN IN HIS SYSTEM AT THE BEGINNING OF THE SCHOOL DAY. SO I THINK YOU NEED TO LEARN THAT FOR THOSE WHO HAVE DIABETES IT ISNT THE HIGH SUGAR OR LOW SUGAR FOODS THAT AFFECT BLOOD SUGARS IT IS THE AMOUNT OF INSULIN THAT IS IN THE SYSTEM OR THE LACK OF INSULIN AND IF THE YOUNG MAN IS ON INSULIN THEN HIS BODY DON'T MAKE INSULIN SO HE EATS CERTAIN FOODS ALREADY...MOST CANT HAVE CEREAL OR TOAST OR EVEN POTATOES OR ANY OTHER FOODS THAT CAUSE THE BLOOD SUGARS TO GO TOO HIGH OR TOO LOW AND IN CASE YOU ARE WONDERING OR BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH AGAIN ALMOST ANY FOOD ITEM WILL AFFECT THE BLOOD SUGARS NOT JUST SUPER SWEET FOODS......I GOTTA BE SUPER CAREFUL OF WHAT I EAT AS I AM ALSO A DIABETIC AND THAT MEANS THAT THE BODY DON'T MAKE ENOUGH INSULIN SO I TAKE A PILL SIMULAR TO INSULIN SO I AM ON A DIET THAT IS VERY LIMITED ON SWEETS....IN FACT I GENERALLY HAVE A SALAD FOR DESSERT OR NO DESSERT....I ALSO DO NOT EAT ALL THE FOOD PLACED IN FRONT OF ME WHEN I GO OUT AND FOR BREAKFAST HAVE A SPECIAL CEREAL FOR DIABETICS AND I ACTUALLY MEASURE IT WITH A MEASURING CUP AND MY BLOOD SUGARS ARE STILL GOOFY WHEN FOR 2 HOURS AFTER I EAT AND SOMETIMES IT IS NOT GOOD ...BEFORE YOU OPEN YOUR MOUTH AGAIN GET A WEEKS WORTH OF DIABETIC MENUES AND TRY TO LIVE ON LESS THAN 1000 CALORIES A DAY AND NO SUGAR ADDED FOODS AND VERY LOW LEVELS OF CARBS....AND IN CARBS I MEAN NO POTATOES BREAD OR BAKED GOODS AND A VERY LIMITED AMOUNT OF VEGITABLES.....AND BY NO SUGAR ADDED I MEAN NO CAKES PIES OR ANY THING THAT MAYBE EATEN OR DRANK THAT IS SWEETENED BY SUGAR....I AM BETTING YOU WILL CRACK IN 3 HOURS!!!!!!!
