The Daily Herald reports that an unnamed Buffalo Grove, Ill. 15-year-old called 911 last week after his mother and father took away his Xbox as a punishment for an undisclosed transgression. Buffalo Grove police Cmdr. Steve Husak says that the caper started out as a hang-up call to the emergency service.
Husak tells ParentDish that all abandoned 911 calls in the area are traced and that officers follow up with a visit to the address from which the call originated.
"When officers responded, they saw it was a domestic situation," says Husak. "The center of the argument was that his parents were punishing him and he wanted clarification of whether or not they could do that. Officers advised him that yes, that was in fact a punishment."
Husak adds that officers went on to explain that the boy's parents were well within their rights and that he should try to follow the rules of the house.
To his credit, the boy finally agreed.

Commenting about his parents is so right on.This must have been the first punishment this boys' ever had.It really is a sad state of affairs when this kid thinks getting an x-box taken away requires police intervention. can you imagine him in the real world. Bet his parents will wonder why when he turns 30 he can't stand on his own two feet. Or why he is 30, and hasn't left home yet. or why he can't hold a job, or why they still have to support him......you get what I am saying....

Ryan said...I can't believe a child could be this ignorant of not only what 911 is supposed to be used for, but also that his parents can punish him by taking his xbox. That's barely a punishment, and i hope he's punished more harshly for abusing 911.

Katie said...Think what happens when this child or his friends are asked to do something at school by a teacher. Try not to be too quick to condemn teachers for not keeping students' interestd in school or maintaining a behaved classroom. This child calling 911 is extreme but it is indicative of the attitude of many many more kids that NO ONE can tell them to do anything!

That would've put that kid in HIS PLACE!! What a spoiled slug he must be!! Or maybe, it's his parents that deserved to be slapped!! They couldn't possibly be doing their job if this kid thinks that he can call the police just for taking away a game!!! THAT GAME WOULD BE HISTORY, IF THAT WERE MY KID!!! And then I'd look at him with a smile on my face while saying, "Call the police now you punk!! See if they'll do anything about it!! Cause THEY WON'T!!!!!

Flag says: Today's kids would come back with a shotgun and that would be the end of you. No wonder parents are afraid to discipline.

CINDY said...HEY FLAG!!! You don't have to remind me, what TODAY'S kids are like!! But if ALL parents thought like you, kids would NEVER be punished!! The kids would be running the show based on the FEAR that the parents would be showing!! And if ADULTS allowed that to happen, kids would be WAY WORSE than what they already are!!! Parents are in charge!!! NOT KIDS!!! I only hope you don't have kids of your own!!! Because it sounds to me like they may RULE THE ROOST!!! And that would make you, a WIMP as well as a BAD PARENT!!!!!

Neal said...That would have been the first place to start,,,,10 years ago, but the parents were probably affraid the police or CPS would lock them up if they even "thought" of anything other than a "time out" in the corner, let alone the teachers and medical staff that inform ALL children that parents cannot "harm" them in any way without being punished by incarceration or going to court and having the children taken away. I speak from experience in this manner as I was handcuffed and taken to a "child psychologist/investigator" whom had me uncuffed and told the "officers" he was tired of seeing bruised bottoms from spankings of incourageable children.

evesin said...Why are you all assuming he hasn't been disciplined before? He is 15 and probably has turned into a teenager who thinks he is too old for punishment and wanted to punish his parents by calling 911.
I had two teenagers at once and they both tried pushing their luck. Staying firm and consistent is all a parent can do. If they continually break the rules they have the law on their side.
My daughter "Emancipated" herself at 16 through Family Court and lived outside my home. However, parents everywhere please note, even though she quit school and was given assistance by Social Services, I had absolutely no say in anything she did. Unfortunately I was still held responsible for any debts she ran up until she turned 18.

Hmmmmm said...Sounds about like some of the nonsensical laws we have on the books today and no doubt most politicians wouldn't be able to even comprehend there is anything wrong with that model.
