The Daily Herald reports that an unnamed Buffalo Grove, Ill. 15-year-old called 911 last week after his mother and father took away his Xbox as a punishment for an undisclosed transgression. Buffalo Grove police Cmdr. Steve Husak says that the caper started out as a hang-up call to the emergency service.
Husak tells ParentDish that all abandoned 911 calls in the area are traced and that officers follow up with a visit to the address from which the call originated.
"When officers responded, they saw it was a domestic situation," says Husak. "The center of the argument was that his parents were punishing him and he wanted clarification of whether or not they could do that. Officers advised him that yes, that was in fact a punishment."
Husak adds that officers went on to explain that the boy's parents were well within their rights and that he should try to follow the rules of the house.
To his credit, the boy finally agreed.

D. Shan said...So violence is the answer to a problem child for you "older generations" is it? Never understood how you people justified physically(and emotionally) BEATING your child over anything this side of murder. Couldn't think of a better way of teaching huh? So it was either, do what I tell you or I will hurt you. Sure you can say its "disipline" but i'd argue most parents take a bit of satisfaction out of hitting a child who's frustrating or annoying them. Calling it "disipline" allows you not to have to call it "abuse". But you keep on thinking bringing pain to the ones who you love, and who look up to you isnt going come back to haunt you.

But back then there was no xbox, I remember being excited for some matchbox cars. another interesting thing when my sisters slammed their bedroom door he took the door off for a week, this stopped that. I would have never called the police on my dad, strict as he was with dicipline and respecting elders he was a great father who provided (feed, cloth, shelter) and never once laid a hand on me, we never saw fighting in the house. H e was able to put 4 through college and left a good chunk of $ for us when he passed because of his ways.

Majority of the people that I know are like this, sadly, and they criticize and mock me for not being like them. If they want to be spoiled, obnoxious, moronic brats, then that's there decision. Hope they like struggling when real life hits them.
Now, I can see people blaming video games for this (Jack Thompson would have a field day), but that's not the case. I myself have numerous game consoles and games (including a 360), but my parents have taught me how to behave and have raised me well. I work first, play laer. And if I got punished, I probably deserved it. And I won't call 911, I won't whine, I'll just tough it out like I should.

I had one show up for his first day of work on a construction site complaining that I did not have a frig for him to put his lunch in. After a week I fired him cause he did nothing all day. He protested saying I could not fire him cause he didn't make any mistakes or do anything wrong. I told him he would have to do something to make a mistake. I told him to file a complaint with the labor board and asked if I needed to remove him by force or if he was walking out. I never saw him again.

I'll tell you how many! Probably 0! The other thing that gave it away was how articulate and meticulous you were writing the post, as a 15yo! I have raised 3 boys and although they are all adults now, I remember quite well when they were all 15yo... Not one of them talked or wrote like that. Yeah, you can say you were brought up well, by an English professor father, and a teacher for a mom, but I'm still not buying that you're only 15! And, if I'm correct, which most of the time, my gut instincts are right on, shame on you for being such an idiot!

Then she cussed me out talking like an old sailor. If it weren't for my having on a heavy robe she would have taken out a chunk of meat plus.. I'd removed things from her before and grounded her, never reacted like this before.. I won't have to wiory about reaching foir her phone again and getting bit, cell phone is gone. Kids are addicted to their electronics. She's also going into counseling. Schools are part of the problem. I have a password to check on her grades and a teacher required the students to have it.. Kids feel they are entitled to everything..

Bob C said...I am in law enforcement ... in most jurisdictions nonsensical calls to 911 are a crime. What the boy did falls under that category. Here He would have wound up in the Juvenile assesment center and possibly onto JDC.
The LEO's that delt with him and the situation are obviously laid back cops. They let him slide where I wouldn't have. If you saw the stack of 911 calls that LEO's must answer (stacked up like cord wood) never knowing which is serious or not ,,, prank calls would end.
Its not funny boys and girls ... someone you love could be in trouble with help being delayed because the boy lost his x-box.
Police agencies do have 24/7 non emergencies numbers and the folks there will handle your nonsense! Happily! Please don't over burden the street officers!!

Someone his age should know that getting your game taken from you is not an excuse to call 9-1-1. I have called the number by mistake. NC has a 910 and 919 area code and unfortunately for me, one of my friends lives in one of those areas and I accidentally hit the 1 twice. I think that there shouldn't be any area codes that start with 9-1. I had a cop pull up in my yard and it was so embarrassing.

Shelly said...@William. Perhaps you are unfamiliar with the horrible feeling of being investigated just for being a responsible parent. The feeling of being constantly watched or being seen as a bad parent in any way does not end when the investigation ends. My neighbors were irritated that there were children at my son's 1st birthday party (on a Saturday afternoon) and called child services, claiming I was smoking pot around my kids. Not only did I have to have a drug test and and alcohol test, which I passed, they had the audacity to ask my 14 year old daughter, who is wheelchair-bound, if I was the reason she was unable to walk. They make your life as humiliating and painful as possible, then don't even call to apologize, just send out a form letter saying "charges unsubstantiated". I won't even have a glass of wine with my dinner because I'm so terrified they'll descend again. I did nothing wrong, but I still felt persecuted. Child services operates under the mantra "Guilty Until Proven Innocent."
