Student Banned From High School Yearbook For Making Funny Face
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True
Fifteen-year-old Charlie Patton of San Antonio, Texas, mugged for her fellow students on picture day to get them to smile just before her own photograph was taken at for the James Madison High School yearbook, reports news station KENS 5.
The photographer hesitated for a minute when she saw Patton's goofy grin, but the teen gave her permission to snap the shutter. Patton's mother was also present for picture day, and gave her daughter the go-ahead.
"The camera girl looked at my mom and said, 'You alright with that, mom?,'" Patton tells the station. "My mom said, 'Sure, of course.'"
School officials were less amused, and yanked Patton's photo from the yearbook. They even compared her facial expression to a gang sign. A statement released to KENS 5 reads: "Since the yearbook represents the school and the students, the goal is to have every student presented in the best light... Students who make inappropriate faces or gestures or who do not follow the school dress code in their yearbook photos are asked to retake their photo free of charge."
Despite the kerfuffle over her silly face, Patton wears the photograph on her school ID around her neck and also has a T-shirt featuring the snapshot, which she also wears to school.
Patton claims she was never offered a chance for a second photograph.
"It's almost like they are deleting me from James Madison High School," she tells KENS 5.

GARY kLAHR said..."GANG SIGNS" ARE THE BIGGEST SCAMS SCHOOL ADMINS USE. schools try to ban most clothes as "gang related." The Osborn District in Phoenix in 1992 spent $250,000 of tax money trying to expel a preacher's son goody-goody for "gang activities" MERELY for wearing a used $1 Michael Jordan cartoon tee because it had a quarter-sized Bulls logo that the POLICE & PRINCIPAL claimed was a gang symbol---Absurd-;--that logo was on ONE BILLION TV sets in the summer of '92 when Pippin & Jordan played on the U.S. Olympic BB team. STOP FEARING GANGS THIS way---you cannot ban foir good kids everything that gang members ALSO wear or use---think Coca Cola, underwear and automobiles!!!! Schools are giving control to the gangs that way. It is absurd and MUST STOP/ Gary Klahr J..D., Phoenix

Meaning, If a student DID gesture a gang sign or display anything innoproriet I agree that they have the right to pull the picture out of the year book. Although, In this case all she did was smile wide! No reason to exclude her picture.

This is a copy of my email to Charlie Patton’s principal (and I use the term loosely), Hopefully he will be mature enough to wise up and not cause anyone anymore problems. Please tell them how you feel and hopefully they will care.

The way you have treated Charlie Patton is disgusting. Especially having not even given her the chance/choice to have her picture retaken. If I were her and I WAS given the chance to have my picture retaken, I would refuse to grace your yearbook with my likeness. I would be embarrassed and ashamed, at this point, to admit that I attended your school. If this matter was taken to court, you would have the burden of proof. Show me evidence that Charlie's FUNNY, HAPPY SHINING face has ever been displayed by gang members. Of course, now that you have put the idea out there, It could become just that! How about putting YOUR gang like mentality on the shelf and pay to have all the yearbooks redone (If they have already been printed or put the picture in if they have not yet been printed) and let that BEAUTIFUL, HAPPY, WONDERFUL, CHEERFUL face properly, positively, and proudly represent your school.

Since then there are uniforms and extreme dress code rules and even rules that make students conform to act as if they are a preconcieved mold of their classmates. This makes me wonder if in our near future schools will ban history and social studdies classes from teaching the chapters on free speech. In a world where we have come so far as to have an African American president it sickens me that a little girl entering a large new school trying to be "heard" thru a picture in a yearbook would be censored. Much less the school trying to claim that this child was using a gang sign is obsurd. Not only is it rediculous it is slander and If the student were of any other ethnicity I do not believe that that comment would have ever been associated with the student.

Barbara said...LOL I agree what exactly is the "gang sign" in her picture! I agree it's not the most appealing picture and I don't want to see her mouth open when looking at a picture, but hey the kid was happy and it's her picture. WHO CARES! As long as she isn't wearing inappropriate clothes, showing too much skin, or giving the finger, AND her mom is okay with it then what's the problem. We need to stop raising our children as if they are glass tables and start raising them as granite counter tops. Seriously we are so afraid to hurt our childrens feelings that we are doing more harm then good!

TeachNotPreach said...Thats the problem with today's board of educations in the USA..and why our students are ranking so low compared to their peers globally. The board of education cares not to change out dated boring - meaningless cirriculums, but would rather prefer you look the way they did some 40 years ago! Maybe today's year books should also go back to black and white photo's, I'll bet that would also please them old pompus arse fuddyduddies. Maybe it's time for todays students to begin protesting against their local Board of Education and demand better, no - up date to the class room subjects that will better prepare them to compete after graduation. Your boring them to tears! Advancements in today's technology is much more important for them to learn and keep them interested than appearances in yearbooks!

Charlie, authorty figures are to be respected, but not always trusted. Stay true to yourself. You know right from wrong. Never let some judgemental lame brain convince you you're not good enough.

Anyone can spout nonsense, I just did. School policy states that the students have the option to have their pictures taken free of charge. If they did so, she refused to modify her mug, I think the school would be on solid ground. The present situation sounds like a million dollar lawsuit the school would lose. People are being shot because they wear the wrong color shirt. I have no idea how that translates into gang signs, but until it happened, I didn’t know the color of a shirt was important in saving your life. In the name of safety, asking her to retake her picture makes sense to me. Have they done so by now?
