Student Banned From High School Yearbook For Making Funny Face
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True
Fifteen-year-old Charlie Patton of San Antonio, Texas, mugged for her fellow students on picture day to get them to smile just before her own photograph was taken at for the James Madison High School yearbook, reports news station KENS 5.
The photographer hesitated for a minute when she saw Patton's goofy grin, but the teen gave her permission to snap the shutter. Patton's mother was also present for picture day, and gave her daughter the go-ahead.
"The camera girl looked at my mom and said, 'You alright with that, mom?,'" Patton tells the station. "My mom said, 'Sure, of course.'"
School officials were less amused, and yanked Patton's photo from the yearbook. They even compared her facial expression to a gang sign. A statement released to KENS 5 reads: "Since the yearbook represents the school and the students, the goal is to have every student presented in the best light... Students who make inappropriate faces or gestures or who do not follow the school dress code in their yearbook photos are asked to retake their photo free of charge."
Despite the kerfuffle over her silly face, Patton wears the photograph on her school ID around her neck and also has a T-shirt featuring the snapshot, which she also wears to school.
Patton claims she was never offered a chance for a second photograph.
"It's almost like they are deleting me from James Madison High School," she tells KENS 5.

Yes, "educators" are paid poorly. As a teacher, I put in well over "40 hours" a week. I take work home with me every single night and continue to do school work on weekends to make my lessons the best they can be to help my students be successful. I take offense to your comments that educators "sense of reality is so warped that they cannot perform any other tasks" and that we "punt" and get an education degree. It takes a person with lots of patience, kindness, generosity, discipline, and anything else you can name to be an educator these days. Each year the students come to us with less prior knowledge of basic tasks, less motivation to succeed, and less respect for anyone, including themselves. Some parents seem to think that thier only job is to give birth and let everyone else raise thier child. I see nothing wrong with the picture that this girl made for the yearbook, but I am a teacher--NOT an administrator. You seem to think that teachers have the final say and it's our way or no way. You're very wrong about that. Administrators (principals & superintendents) make those decisions. So, to say that educators have warped senses of reality---maybe it's you who does. You say that "dolts, idiots, and ideologs fill the halls of schools. How would you know? Are you there to meet each and every teacher? By the way, what your profession?

Khoreen said...to scsmith: you may be an exception, but sadly dave is more right than wrong. You describe your work as a teacher, but what about others? I have a job that allows me to see thousands of schools and teachers a year across the country. (2-3 schools a day, always different) Sadly more often than not the teacher, and administrators fall short. There is little structure, little organization, and sadly it seems little learning. The focus seems to be on trivial matters instead of education. While this decision was an admin. decision, I also watch teachers fall short on a daily basis. Things may be different where you are but sadly that is the exception and not the rule.
As for banning the picture...that was a poor decision and hopefully it will be rectified, but sadly I won't hold my breath.

Sarah said...Hey, watch what you say about educators, jackass. We are some of the hardest-working, most dedicated, most compassionate people in this country. Have you ever tried to control a room full of 30 12-year-olds, all with different issues and at different learning levels, and made sure they were all learning all the time? I work 60 hours a week to make sure my kids are taken care of academically, not because I get paid to do it--I don't--but because I care that much. I am in this because I care about kids, and learning, not because I took the easy way out. Anyone who says teaching is the equivalent of "punting" should do my job for an hour and see how "easy" it is. And, based on your poorly written comment, you didn't pay much attention to whoever tried to educate you, which pretty much makes you a dolt, doesn't it? Don't talk about it unless you know what you are talking about--which, judging from your comments you clearly don't.

As a matter of fact I am an educator in Boston and I have a B.A. in History, an M.A. in History and an M.A. in Teaching History. So my friend I decide to give my time to the public in the hopes that this democracy will be able to function. Espeacially in a world that is looking increasingly bleak, considering people like you consider sharing knowledge to be a "punt."

But the majority now days are just like what he was talking about. When people talk like that, they are just speaking about the overwhelming majority. Don't get too bent out of shape and thanks for still caring about your students... especially when their parents don't.

They should've use tact in explaining a more appropriate photo.
Diplomacy doesn't seem to be a priority at this school.
Seems as though the school is run by former Hitler youth, and punishing an innocent person for being an individual.
so much for for freedom of expression.

Quit talking and get to work! Make an example of the idiot who decided to pull her picture and let the majority see what an ass this school made of themselves.

It is you who are disrespectful when you say that it seems like the school is run by former Hitler youth. You are throwing around very damaging accusations as if nothing were wrong with that. In this case, I think that the administrators acted rashly and that their idea of a student being presented in the best light really means that a student should conform. There is nothing that will kill initiative more than an administrator's demand that everybody conform and act just like everybody else. I hope this girl goes on to great success and that when she gives her Nobel Prize acceptance speech she mentions how certain administrators during her high school years tried to force her to fit into their idea of what a proper girl should look like. These are very petty people who discourage kids from even wanting to stay in school. I wonder this school's dropout rate is. In fact, I wonder if any of their students have distinguished themselves as a result of their administrators' support.
