Middle Schoolers Face Suspension For Alleged Facebook Threats

Students at a Massachusetts middle school are under investigation after officials discovered a Facebook group threatening a teacher.

The group is called "If 1,000 People Join This Group, I'll Slap Mrs. Meyer," referring to Ann Meyer, assistant principal of Miscoe Hill School in Mendon, Mass., according to The Milford Daily News.

Police are investigating the incident, Mendon Police and Fire Chief Ernest Horn tells the paper, because "any threat against a teacher, there is zero tolerance for that." Consequences for the students involved may include suspension.

School officials also uncovered two additional Facebook groups: "Miscoe Hill Sucks," and "I Hate Mrs. Meyer," but Horn says that the two groups threatening Meyer are under the most scrutiny. "We will take any and all security measures necessarily to ensure the safety of the staff," he says.

Superintendent Antonio Fernandes tells the newspaper that he wasn't exactly sure how the group was found out, but that a student may have come forward.

The News reports that the group "I Hate Mrs. Meyer" included a post that read: "People that stayed in, thanks ... everyone is just scared (they're going to) get in trouble." A search on Facebook by ParentDish revealed that the group has since been taken down.

Students are wondering why their peers may be suspended when they were simply exercising their right to free speech, but Fernandes says the kids misunderstand the concept. "I don't think students understand freedom of speech," Fernandes tells the News. "Once you write something on Web sites or on Facebook, it's there forever."

The school held assemblies this week to address the seriousness of the threats, as well as what students should do if they discover similar groups in the future. Miscoe Hill Principal Roseanne Kurposka sent an email to parents stating that the school is "working to prevent further negative impact of the image of our school on Facebook."
