New Turnaround Teacher 'Trying To Get It Right' In Tough School
Middle Schoolers Face Suspension For Alleged Facebook Threats
Filed under: In The News
Students at a Massachusetts middle school are under investigation after officials discovered a Facebook group threatening a teacher.
The group is called "If 1,000 People Join This Group, I'll Slap Mrs. Meyer," referring to Ann Meyer, assistant principal of Miscoe Hill School in Mendon, Mass., according to The Milford Daily News.
Police are investigating the incident, Mendon Police and Fire Chief Ernest Horn tells the paper, because "any threat against a teacher, there is zero tolerance for that." Consequences for the students involved may include suspension.
School officials also uncovered two additional Facebook groups: "Miscoe Hill Sucks," and "I Hate Mrs. Meyer," but Horn says that the two groups threatening Meyer are under the most scrutiny. "We will take any and all security measures necessarily to ensure the safety of the staff," he says.
Superintendent Antonio Fernandes tells the newspaper that he wasn't exactly sure how the group was found out, but that a student may have come forward.
The News reports that the group "I Hate Mrs. Meyer" included a post that read: "People that stayed in, thanks ... everyone is just scared (they're going to) get in trouble." A search on Facebook by ParentDish revealed that the group has since been taken down.
Students are wondering why their peers may be suspended when they were simply exercising their right to free speech, but Fernandes says the kids misunderstand the concept. "I don't think students understand freedom of speech," Fernandes tells the News. "Once you write something on Web sites or on Facebook, it's there forever."
The school held assemblies this week to address the seriousness of the threats, as well as what students should do if they discover similar groups in the future. Miscoe Hill Principal Roseanne Kurposka sent an email to parents stating that the school is "working to prevent further negative impact of the image of our school on Facebook."

You want to advocate a teenager, maybe your own child, slapping an adult? Would you stand still for it if he slapped you? I bet not. It is people like you that make a teacher's job difficult, even scary in some districts. Have you ever heard of the "Mob Mentality"? Do you not think possibly it might not stop with just one slap. And what the heck does "institutionalize their fun mean"? Those responsible should be suspended. Second time in trouble they should be expelled. Go find a school that will take them. When they have to pay for their education they will think twice about behaving.

Darla said...It's all about respect. We need to respect each other as humans. A group threatening to slap and humiliate someone is nothing but bullying.
On the other hand, why do they dislike this vice-principal so much? Is it her job, or is she unfair to the kids? The kids need to respect adults and the adults need to remember that their kids are people too. This doesn't mean giving them everything they ask for, and it certainly doesn't mean slapping them around. I think it's stupid to give a kid something like a car unless she earns it, or she won't value it.
The only time you should slap a kid is when they are reaching for the stove burner or something else dangerous, slap their hands away from it.

Xavier said...As a high school teacher I can say with a certainty that DUDE is a total dumbass... this whole "kids are just having fun" B___S___ is the reason teachers have problems in the classroom. Parents are always trying to excuse their children's inappropriate behavior. Jr. High students should have respect...PERIOD!!! And I'll tell you one thing... I am probably one of the more popular teachers on campus but I don't tolerate disrespect and parents who think that their chilren can talk to me like they apparently talk to them. If you want to have kids (I have a 16 & 17 yr old) then learn to raise them right. Conservative or Liberal doesn't matter... respect should be taught by all parents. Would you let them "have fun" by telling their grandmother that she is a Bi&*^ if she reprimanded them!?! I woould think not. DUDE... you are a total idiot.

Dave said...So freedom of speech includes hate speech? So if there is a group on Facebook called "I hate gay people" or "I hate black people" that's ok by you? Freedom is not just a right, it's a responsibility. We also have the right to own guns, but does that mean we should just go around shooting people? Nope. Use your freedom of speech wisely, instead of as a publicity stunt!

stevejchi said...It's not ok for kids to slap teachers, nor for teachers to slap kids. Training kids to use physical violence is bad training. Whoops, I don't mean that training them in physical violence to serve in the armed forces is bad. That's good violence. I guess.
Offering to slap the teacher if enough people sign up isn't about freedom of speech, any more than asking for volunteers to join to attack and harm a teacher is about freedom of speech. Both imply an overt act of violence, similar to inciting to riot.
Kids have always liked to experiment to discover their own power. It would be good if they learned their power to create in a socially perceived positive way. But there are many examples of groups gathering to "right social wrongs." From this groups perception, what is perceived as an abusive assistant principal (a misuse of power, a social wrong) is a rightous use of the freedom of speech.
It would be wise if the adults offended by this perceived "misuse of power" were to investigate, evaluate, and resolve the cause of animosity, instead of merely complaining that the kids are addressing the issue in the wrong way, making it a matter of form over substance. But that would require acknowledging that the kids have a right to object.
I wonder if this group of adults will be that wise.

Frequently educated people spend so much time in school, which is not the real world, that they forget there is another "authority" other than the rotten capitalist System. Academics are nothing but henchmen for the capitalist job market anyway. Stupid America has now legislated that you can't hate anyone anymore, hate has been around since the beginning of time! How laughable.

the kids were celebrating halloween then two weeks later came friday the 13th. we all remember playing boo-scary jokes since freddy came out right? anyway the 11 year old boy and two of his buddys were talking about the 13th all week long, come friday the 11 year old 6th grader had finished his classwork and decided to write his friends' names down on a list. The two buddies were chimming in here and there when suddenly the girl sitting in front of class tells the teacher the boy is wring a murder list. the teacher then takes the list and the kid to the office telling the vice-principal that he was writing a hit list. during this time school is letting out and the two buddies had to get off the bus to come too the principals office. the vice principal asks the boy did you write this murder list. the boy has heard it called that 2 or 3 times so he says yes. the two buddies say they did nothing and got to go home. the boy had to stay wait for mom and the cops to come. the principal recomends permenent suspension.

A slap is mild compared to what I've seen (picture casts and neck braces). BTW I went to middle school in an upper middle class neighborhood. It's always wrong to threaten anyone, but I think teacers need to be more aware of how they handle their students.

Doesn't take much to get you riled up and screaming in upper-case, does it?
While a proposal to slap someone is a threat and should indeed be checked to protect the safety of the threatened party, it's overreacting to take "any and all security measures necessarily[sic]" over something trivial like a slap since middle-schoolers do not have the physical capacity to inflict grievous bodily harm to a full-grown adult by slapping them. Now, were this something along the lines of, "I will crack Mrs. Meyer over the head with a 9-iron," I can totally understand a full-length police investigation. A slap is not inherently life-threatening, and if anyone slaps a teacher, we have stiff assault charges for that especially in a pre-meditated case like this one.
Also keep in mind that this is on the Internet, where everyone claims to have balls of steel and will dole out infantile threats at the drop of a hat. On top of that, this is a group of middle-schoolers who probably don't like the assistant principle because, well, she's the assistant principle. It's a typical stupid kid thing to defy people in authority on the very basis that they represent authority. I am almost certain the child in question would get cold feet even if the 1000-member target were reached. This problem could have been solved by contacting the parents of the children involved and being wary of students approaching the assistant-principle. Dragging the cops into this was a monumental waste of their time and resources that could have been spent doing something more important. That's the only problem I have with this reaction on the school's part. It's the equivalent of blasting a locked door off its hinges because you couldn't be bothered to find the key.
But more important than the argument of the potency of slapping is the issue of the two groups "Miscoe Hill Sucks," and "I Hate Mrs. Meyer." These groups, while not in the best of taste, are protected under free speech since these are opinions, and not open threats of physical harm. Not only would it be absurd to investigate these groups (What the charge would be I have no idea), it would be unconstitutional to do so.

Christie said...Wow...its a Facebook page people! get over yourselves. I hate my vice principle because he picks on anyone that isn't preppy and doesn't suck up to him. He once told me that a skirt i wore was inappropriate for school because it was too short. I checked it. I goes way past my middle finger all the way around. he needs to stop looking at my a**. We can't even wear necklaces with little certain charms on it that cannot be used as weapons mind you because i bet if a barbie dolll somehow came to life her fingers couldnt use the charm. it was a brass knuckle charm that was also SPARKLY wtf. teachers thought it was cute but once he saw them himself i was sent to the office. You know what? If kids are making a small web page about a certain teacher or staff member you should look into it and see he or she may deserve it for being a dick head to the kids. There's one thing to be a teacher but to be downright degrading and also making the kids feel like they'd rather get mugged then its time to figure out whats going on. My vice principle also tried getting it that the fingerless gloves and wrist warmers that you see everyone wearing, not just goths/emos, were not allowed in school because it was a hygiene problem. I can tell you most everyone that wears them takes em off to wipe there butt and wash their hands before going back to class.
everything is getting seriously f*cked up

They wouldn't be so careless in their usuage if they were educated properly. Another sign of how the system has failed to teach something then complain when they don't know the proper usage.
The administration and staff do not protect the kids and have a "deal with it policy" when dealing with assaults, bullying, etc on the kids. That is wrong. I'm so sick of teachers and schools whining over people being mean to them and expecting respect. You get what you give. Then they turn around and let the kids down because they are too busy bitching about kids and their jobs, pay, whatever than to help the kids.
It is not ok to make a "threat" but then again I can see how these kids would want to hit people when the system is set up the way it is. The vicious circle envokes frustration. Clearly this woman has some poor interpersonal skills in dealing with students that these kids went to this extreme to complain amongst "themselves" and got a following of students who wanted her to have some punishment for her actions towards them.
Why does the school feel the need to spy on their students to purposly find fault and dig up dirt? If reported by some student who did it for their own agenda, they just sealed their fate until graduating high school as to how other peers are going to relate to them.
Someone should file a complaint on her for her attitude. In my opinion only, sounds like a "stick removal operation" is needed.
Why do you think teens and preteens are so angry & moody half the time? They are getting so much garbage from adults and no creative learning (all boring textbook), no protection, no safety, no privacy, no wonder why they are so upset. I remember being that age and have a child that age now, and I get it.
Protect the staff but screw the kid over. Set them up for failure. It happens all the time. I give no teachers respect anymore.
Teachers these days lie, sleep with students, have their husband kill their students, have students kill husbands, manipulate thier students in ways teachers should not be doing, behave exactly how they tell everyone not to (do as I say not as I do). Don't they remember how to lead by example. Their example is all over the press. Their negligence causes severe depression, bullying to continue, bullying to escalate into physical violence, etc. They have a better than you attitude and they are no better than anyone. When I was a kid we respected teachers, its not the kids these days, it is what they are learning. I don't blame them for having no respect.

Teachers r not gods-- they r human. Some r great and really make a positive impact. Some r awful and should b reprimanded or fired. Listen to the kids BEFORE SOMEONE SHOOTS UP THE PLACE!!! Maybe this teacher is abusing their position, taking bad moods out on kids, a control freak, etc. To earn respect, u have to give respect-- even to kids:) How else r they s'posed to learn respect if it isn't modeled for them?
