Baby Wigs: Disturbing Trend?

Blogger Sandra Rose recently shared the story of a reader who says: "It's never too early for my baby to start looking glamorous like Beyonce!" The unnamed parent went so far as to have a lace-front human-hair wig custom made for her wee one, in a style much like her own. "I wouldn't be caught dead without my lace front and my baby won't either," says the mom.
Mommy-n-me wigs may just be the most disturbing parenting trend we've heard in a long time, and The Frisky agrees with us. That site wants to know what's next: Thong diapers?
How about coordinating stripper poles, one for the nursery and one for the master bedroom? Or better yet, twin therapists to deal with their matching self-esteem issues? Suri's high heels are starting to look a lot more innocent with every waking moment.
We even found an entire site dedicated to hair-raising a child.
Not surprising that super models want to check out the trend. Here's a discussion of baby wigs on the Tyra Banks show:
Were you embarrassed by your child's baldness and if yes, why?

Dlaplan01 said...This is sooooo stupid!! Hair...for a baby? How about instead of using this hair for your child, who will almost definitely grow hair of their own, use that hair to make wigs for kids who had hair but lost it because of cancer? This probably wouldn't even help in a lot of cases. My daughter was "unisex" looking for awhile when she was a baby. It didn't matter if she had girly things on though. I couldn't tell you how many times I had her in hot pink or wrapped in a hot pink blanket and people would ask how old my little boy was. I would just be flabbergasted. Hello, she's in HOT PINK!!!

If you want the kid to look like a girl, dress her like a girl. That doesn't have to mean dresses, just girl's colors. I LOVE the peach-fuzz on a baby's head! I think it's so sweet. And if they get a little bald spot in the back from the crib, that's cute too. It's called being a baby! Geez!

The after every ultarsound iI had while I was pregnant my mother would ask the doctor if she saw hair on the baby's head and the doctor would always reply no. its seemed like it upset her but my husband and I was just happy that she was healthy. We just went out and brought a bunch of cute little headbands. Needless to say she couldn't wear them because she had too much hair. She's only 1yr old and her hair touches her botttom. I sometimes wish she had been born bald. I think mental evaluation should be performed on these mothers. putting those nasty wigs on an infants head should be considered neglectful. These babies are going to grow up with all type of self-esteem issues.

Bald babies are beautiful. It is natural. This woman should be made to go to parenting classes.

Wigs for babies; then beauty pagents for three year olds; then pushing the kids into "dating" at age nine. I saw similar stuff in kids' sports too - pour money into $200 sneakers and $ 300 sports duffels and $ 2500 per year to belong to an 'elite' team - at age eight !
Please don't pass laws to control it - I'm having too much fun laughing at it !

My kids are mixes and they had a lot of hair at birth but not nearly as much as Mexicans babies. For good sacks let these infants be infants they are beautiful with or without hair. My son was born with long hair, do you think I was going to cut it off beacuse people mistakes him for a girl.... NO. By allowing our children wear these wigs we are instilling that beauty starts from outside and that girls must somehow be perfect. These are the typs of mother who give their daughter breast implant fro a graduation present. Complete crazyness.

Bait said...I am the opposite. I hate it when babies are born with lots of hair. I like them bald or with just a few strands. I was lucky. My son was born bald. However, if he had been born with lots of hair, I would not have shaved his head. I would have been grateful he was healthy and I would have loved him just the same.
As for little girls, I hate those stupid elastic bands people put around their heads. They are ugly and I get a headache just looking at them. Why not tape tiny bows to their heads or put them in bonnets (they still make baby bonnets if you look)?
In my experience babies who have to wait a while for their hair to grown in usually end up with the thickest, most luxurious hair of all!
However, I am afraid if these wacko moms do not let their babies' heads get some sunlight and fresh air, the hair developing in the follicles will be destroyed.

diane said...I agree completely. Until the wigs, I thought the headbands were the stupidest thing I'd seen. I was hoping they were just a trashy fad that would fade out-this is worse.
Babies *by definition* are beautiful-why do anything to distract from Nature's greatest creation?
Even if those mothers don't do anything else to screw up the kid (unlikely), when they get older how are these children going to react to the photos of them wearing these hideous things? 'Mom, didn't you think I was pretty enough when I was a baby?' Talk about damaging self-esteem. Poor babies.
IMHO, pierced ears on a baby/toddler should be prosecuted as child abuse.
And as long as I'm on a roll-put bonnets or hats on those babies! That precious skin spent 9 months in a dark, moist environment with constant temperature. The world is too hot, too cold, dry and full of ultraviolet rays. Protect their little heads from all that and especially shield their eyes from bright sunlight. Their eyelids are thin-you wear your shades when it's too bright-how would you like to be lying down in a stroller facing the sun with no eye protection?
People are quick enough to buy asinie headbands and wigs for their kids while giving the little ones a head start on skin cancer and cataracts.

She actually thought she was on to an idea that other moms would want to hang over their mantle!!!
