A simple blood test might tell you the sex of your unborn baby.
That's the conclusion of research published in the latest issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Between 2003 and 2009, researchers tested women who were between eight and 10 weeks pregnant, examining DNA from their blood samples to predict the sex of the babies in 186 pregnancies. They predicted 105 boys and 81 girls. They were right every time.
It's good news for parents, says researcher Dr. Peter Scheffer, M.D., of the University of Amsterdam. "It eliminates the dangers associated with invasive testing," he tells MSNBC.
Determining the sex of an unborn baby can lead to early detection of certain disorders. Genetic diseases such as hemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are carried by the X chromosome that almost always occurs in males.
Critics worry an evil genie might be let out of the bottle as fetal testing evolves. Parents might not always like what they find out. "Elective abortion is just about the only option in response to fetal testing," bioethicist Arthur Caplan, Ph.D, of the University of Pennsylvania, tells MSNBC.
However, critics may be too late to cork the bottle. Researchers concluded in Obstetrics and Gynecology that, "Noninvasive fetal sex determination in maternal plasma is highly reliable and clinically applicable."
What do you think? Should we be able to find out our unborn baby's gender so quickly?

My husband and I decided to have an amniocentesis to tell us more about the possibility of a problem. Regardless of the outcome, abortion is not an option for us. We opted for testing so we can be prepared if there IS a problem.

Carla said...Good! I agree--- I think it's horrible that these people would have abortions because they didn't get the gender they wanted.
And, I remember with my second pregnancy, I had a blood clot in my placenta, and both me and my son would have died if not for my doctors closely monitoring me for months, and inducing six weeks early. He was itty-bitty, but he was safe, and fully formed, and he grew quickly once out of the unsafe environment and in the much safer environment of my arms. He'll be three come the New Years, and he's a funny, healthy little guy who helps make our family complete. (and, the quick growth is no joke--- he's been in the 75% percentile since he was eight months old)
To be without him would've been a tragedy.

Elective abortion has never even crossed our minds. I was always told that if God gives you a special child its because he believes you can handle the situation and pass with flying colors. I simply cannot understand why someone would even think about an abortion just because the baby may have something not quite right.

I went thru the testing so I would completely prepared and it turned out to be an malformed embilical cord. He was a very healthy 8lb 9oz baby boy and is now an very health 16year old young man. Kudos to you.

Sharon said...I totally agree. I was 40 when I became pregnant with my daughter. At that time, the only way to tell the baby's gender that early would have been amnio, and I refused that as well as the other screenings. I was unwilling to take the risk of amnio, and since I believe life to begin at conception and would never consider murdering my child, abortion would not even be a consideration. If a blood test to determine gender had been available, however, I would have taken that in a heartbeat. I like to name my children early, and like to be able to personalize the nursery and decor.

God bless you...seems to be you are indeed blessed just to be having the child. I am 56 now, but never could conceive (and there was the very real possibility, that if I did, it would have been a Down's Syndrome Child). If I had had that "special" child, I know that it would have been for a reason...I trust God and have faith in his will completely!
In the extra special time of year, please remember the blessings you do have and that God will give you all you need to handle whatever may arise!!! Merry Christmas/Happy New Year!!!

Some of the tests they do now during pregnancy often come back with faulty results and there is nothing wrong in the long run. Personally, I have had faulty results on tests and still kept the baby anbd thank god I did. I have 4 very healthy boys that have never had a health issue like these tests predicted they would. Some things should just be left up to nature to take its course!

lmthompson87 said...I don't think that this test which is safe and has no risk of harming the mother or child will open a parent up to the possibility of abortion based on the sex of the child any more than the option was already there in the first place. People who truly want a child are not likely to abort because of the issue of gender.

DMish said...We women can already find out the gender of our babies at 16-20 weeks gestation through ultrasound which still gives us 4 1/2 - 5 months to prepare if something is abnormal. So if an abnormality goes undetected with this blood test method, who is going to get sued at that point because it is bound to happen. I am all for preparation, but my oldest has cerebral palsy among other issues (like mental retardation) and we had no idea until months after she was born. It has all worked out fine with prayer and effort. I just think it's dangerous territory and with government health care looming, who is to say that they won't step in and dictate what genders and abortions in the event of abnormalities so that they can save a dime (think China!)?!

Speakezswd said...This test would not determine Cerebal Palsy, which is caused by an injury occuring just before or during birth, and not genetic. The resulting issues are individual, and not predictable.
