A simple blood test might tell you the sex of your unborn baby.
That's the conclusion of research published in the latest issue of the journal Obstetrics and Gynecology.
Between 2003 and 2009, researchers tested women who were between eight and 10 weeks pregnant, examining DNA from their blood samples to predict the sex of the babies in 186 pregnancies. They predicted 105 boys and 81 girls. They were right every time.
It's good news for parents, says researcher Dr. Peter Scheffer, M.D., of the University of Amsterdam. "It eliminates the dangers associated with invasive testing," he tells MSNBC.
Determining the sex of an unborn baby can lead to early detection of certain disorders. Genetic diseases such as hemophilia and Duchenne muscular dystrophy are carried by the X chromosome that almost always occurs in males.
Critics worry an evil genie might be let out of the bottle as fetal testing evolves. Parents might not always like what they find out. "Elective abortion is just about the only option in response to fetal testing," bioethicist Arthur Caplan, Ph.D, of the University of Pennsylvania, tells MSNBC.
However, critics may be too late to cork the bottle. Researchers concluded in Obstetrics and Gynecology that, "Noninvasive fetal sex determination in maternal plasma is highly reliable and clinically applicable."
What do you think? Should we be able to find out our unborn baby's gender so quickly?

SOME of you sound like that family who let their daughter die because she was a diabetic and they didn't give MEDICAL assistance, they just gave her unreliable prayer. wake up! imagine all those pregnant 16 yr old bible beaters who prayed for an abortion and got it! wow, i'd go back to church!

Interestingly enough I have heard the same thing from a few other mothers. Very sad, in my opinion, to think that a person would abort a perfectly healthy baby for that reason alone. I think that people really take medical science for granted. Remember, there was once a day when we coul only guess the sex of a baby through folk medicine. (Old wives' tales) I was lucky enough to know what the genders of my babies were by my body's reaction to the pregnancies and am thrilled to have 3 girls and a boy. So before we go advancing in petty science...because I believe there are more important things than knowing the sex of your baby..let's really take a long hard look at where our priorities are.
BTW...What's with all the genetic comments? This article specifically spoke about gender testing. Before there was all this talk about using it to determine whether some genetic results could be predetermined....I would have liked to see some scientific evidence that this would take the place of sex determination by ultrasound, and amniocentisis. What would happen if someone aborted because they believed the sex of their baby to be certain, and indeed the test turned out wrong? If the test does say that the baby is a certain sex...should it take the place of ultrasound or further testing, or should those procedures also be required as follow up to ensure a more accurate prognosis? I would like to see those questions answered.

I am a carrier of the DMD gene so any male child I have has a 50% chance of being born with DMD. A girl wouldn't have the disorder, they would have a 50% chance of being a carrier like I am. There is currently no cure for DMD and it is 100% fatal, usually before age 30. I love my son with all my heart, he is my world. But, I will not knowingly submit another one of my children to the hardships he's going to have to face because of his disorder. If faced with an accidental pregnancy I'd much rather have the information on gender early on so I could make the tough decision on wether or not to terminate before I was in my second trimester of pregnancy.
