Babies' First Words Include 'Dadda' and 'Beer'

Also somewhat surprising was the news that one out of six children in the survey had some difficulty learning to speak, specifically one out of five boys, and one out of seven girls, the Telegraph reports, which also notes that the most common age for children to start to speak is between 10 and 11 months. The study was conducted by YouGov, a market research firm, and it was published by Jean Gross, England's Communications Champion.
The fact that "Dadda" was the most popular first word did not come as a surprise to one reader of the New York Daily News.
"Any pediatrician can tell you that 'Da Da' is usually heard before 'Ma Ma' because all it takes is the tongue hitting the roof of the mouth to make the sound 'Da Da'," writes a commenter going by the handle commonsense160.
Anecdotally, the first word from two different celebrity children was "Da Da" -- Bronx Mowgli Wentz (son of Ashlee Simpson and Pete Wentz), and Ruby Sweetheart (daughter of Jennifer Meyer and Tobey Maguire).
"Beer" was a bit of a surprise, however. Then again, this is in London. Maybe they start drinking younger across the pond.
What was your baby's first word?

Lita said...I can't help but think that AOL gets some kind of kickback from all the spam that is bogging down the comment areas of virtually every topic. Just yesterday, I read an article and went to the comment area, only to find the first twenty comments were come-ons from spammers. What good does that "Report This" button do? My guess is that they put it there to appease some of the people, but it really has no function. Why not have a group of people whose job it is to patrol these venues and actually delete the garbage? (No wonder they keep losing membership--paying and non-paying.)

BarbiD35 said...My daughter's first word was "Hey", then followed later with the usual DaDa and MaMa. My brother was one of the odd babies who said "Mama" first.
BTW...I agree with you, Jess. AOL should make sure the comments pertain to the subject at hand and not be an advertisement for something else. AOL can block the comments which contain really foul words, why not extend that on out and censor the advertisements also?

Barb Tewell said...When teaching my son to first talk, I would stand with him in my arms at a light switch were he could see the ceiling light. As I was switching the light on, I would say "light on." Then I would do "light off" as I was switching the light off. He loved to play this game and soon learned to do the switching himself. One day, apparently wanting to play the game he pointed to the switch and said "ight."

Kris said..."Dada" is not a real first word for babies. I have a degree in child development and Dada is actually just a normal form of babbling. Their first word should be a real word such a "Mommy, Ball, Dog, Cat, ect."
