School District Apologizes for MLK Lunch Menu

"The plan to serve a Southern-style meal in recognition of Martin Luther King Day was well intentioned but highly insensitive in light of certain hurtful cultural stereotypes still harbored in parts of our society," a message on the disctrict's Web site states.
"Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of the greatest leaders and civil rights heroes in our country's history," the DPS site continues. "We are working with all of our schools to ensure that our students appreciate the enduring legacy of Dr. King's work and life and the extraordinary importance of his message in our community today."
The Denver Post reports that Jennifer Holladay, the mother of a Denver kindergartner and past director of Teaching Tolerance, says she left messages with DPS food service to complain about the menu when she first saw it in December, but never heard back.
"It's a teachable moment for DPS and for people across the country," Holladay, who is white, and whose husband is black, tells the Post. "These caricatures can slip in without any malicious intent."
School board president Nate Easley Jr. tells the newspaper he's more concerned with other issues facing students.
"I don't think people woke up in the morning and said how can we offend people," he tells the Post. "As a black man, the things that offend me more is how we are doing with kids in the district. ... If Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was alive today, I think he would be more concerned about our outcomes of our students than what they are eating to honor him."
Denver Post columnist Bill Johnson writes that the menu choice is "a horribly ignorant stereotype."
"Holladay marvels that no one, from the author to the person who typed it, to the teacher who gave the menu to her daughter, said anything," Johnson writes. "... We need to do better by our children, [Holladay] said. The school district should be held to account, should look on this as a teachable moment for its classrooms."
"And what could be a better time, she said, to teach about racial sterotyping? 'Now that,' Holladay said, 'would be honoring Dr. King.' "
Do you think the Denver Public School District should be held accountable for the menu? Or is this a case of political correctness gone too far?

If they were having a dinner for an Italian hero I am sure spaghetti would be served and I don't think anyone would say it is bad. A Hispanic hero may have taco's served to honor him/her would that cause outrage, nope but to honor a SOUTHERN man who happens to be black and use typical southern cuisine causes noses to be bent out of shape Wow I just think certain people are TRYING to keep the old garbage going just to have something to complain about

Jerry Coffey said...This is but one case of what PC has done to America. There are those that are just waiting for someone like the school district to make what they think is a racial slur. Good intentions be dammed, they want to ever remain in the throes of discrimination. If this was truly a country of equality, these fuzzy thinkers would be out of the limelight and they will not let that happen. Ever.

EuroAmerican? said...I live in Georgia. If our school served fried chicken, collard greens, sweet potatoes, and peach crisp (which should be peach cobbler) our kids would LOVE it! They also wouldn't think anything about it be racist - black and white. As far as stereotyping, it's more like "what SOUTHERN food can we serve" instead of "what black food can we serve". If a Southern school decided to serve Chicago Style Pizza on Obama's birthday would that be racist too?

This is 2010, and people do not care about whether their best friend is black, white, Asian, or whatever their race is. People are friends with people, not colors. What if I (I am a Scandinavian) brought Lutefisk (which many people would not even try) to work durring the Christmas Holidays? I bet the school would not even put it on the menu. That offend me? Not in the least.

Bill said...This is about the stupidest thing I have heard all week. Just more example of how political correctness has gotten out of hand. What was the school system supposed to serve, fish sticks?!! I was born and raised in the south and live in Atlanta, GA today and the meal described is just a typical dish found around here, It would be near the top of the menu at any local, what is known here as a "soul food" restaurant and a great dish to say the least. MLK, Jr. was a born and raised southerner so exactly what is wrong with this menu? It is certainly representative of the south where he was from. How can anyone even try and play the race card on this one? Besides, I doubt seriously that anyone in Denver, CO would even begin to know how to prepare edible fried chicken!!

Pamela said...Hey everyone it is a white woman that is making all this fuss. And she is married to a black man. I am a black woman, and I don't see it as being racist at all. It's southern cooking period. I don't think the school needs to apologize and just make the meal they were planning on making and I am sure the kids will love it.

I think the average black AMERICAN has culturaly evolved enough to not consider this lunch menu stereotypical in any way. But I can assure you that my happy Irish American azzzz is laughing at this school board for looking like a bunch of white idiots. You're so WHITE...LOL. Get over yourselves, you're giving the rest of us a bad name!!!
