Adoptee Creates 'Life Unexpected' Based on Childhood Dreams

When she was a child in the 1980s, adoptee Liz Tigelaar dreamed that her birth mother was Nancy Reagan.

She grew up to write young-adult novels such as "PrettyTOUGH" and worked on the TV series "Brothers & Sisters" and "American Dreams." Now, Tigelaar has created her own show for The CW, "Life Unexpected," about a young girl who finds out that her birth parents do, in fact, have cool jobs. But can they handle raising a 15-year-old girl?

"Life Unexpected" tells the story of Lux (Britt Robertson), a teenager who wants to get emancipated to avoid "bouncing around crappy foster care" for two more years. Lux's birth father is Nate "Baze" Bazile (Kristoffer Polaha), a bar owner who looks like a character from "The Hangover." Lux shows up at his bar, saying, "I'm not a Girl Scout. I'm your daughter."
Baze signs the emancipation papers, and reveals that her birth mother is local radio personality Cate Cassidy (Shiri Appleby). Baze calls Cate on the air to tell her about Lux and Cate signs the papers, as well. Because this is television, both birth parents show up in court when Lux tries to get her emancipation. The judge gives custody of Lux to Cate and Baze, and they try to figure out how to deal with their new family.

In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Tigelaar describes some of the difficulties she had getting "Life Unexpected" on the air.

"Our show's not sexy, and there's nothing trendy about it," she tells the newspaper. "You could say that's bad. But it's a story about growing up, and I think that makes it something else that's good -- universal."

According to Access Hollywood, Tigelaar first met her real-life birth mother this past November. (Unlike Lux, Tigelaar was adopted as a baby, according to the Times.) The first thing she told Tigelaar was, "I'm not a radio DJ." Art imitates life, but not the other way around.

"Life Unexpected" airs on The CW beginning Jan. 18. Here is the extended trailer.
