Milk from nursing mothers in Ohio and around the country is on its way to nourish sick babies in earthquake-ravished Haiti.
The Mothers' Milk Bank of Ohio answered the call from a Navy doctor treating ailing infants on the USNS Comfort, a floating hospital docked off the Haitian coast.
The doctor requested the milk because it can help save lives, says Georgia Morrow, coordinator of the milk bank operated by Grant Medical Center in Columbus, Ohio.
"We would not go through all of this if we did not believe this will allow the babies the best opportunity for survival," Morrow tells ParentDish.
Breast milk contains antibodies that will help the babies fight infections,a common problem children face after a disaster, she explains. Breast milk also is safer option because, unlike some types of formula, it does not have to be mixed with water, she says. Clean drinking water is in short supply in Haiti.
The banks typically provide breast milk, which can be frozen for up to a year, to babies in neonatal units in U.S. hospitals.
Ohio mom Tria Shadeed, who regularly donated milk to the bank until last month, told The Columbus Dispatch she hopes her milk was included in the shipment.
"I would be very proud to know that my milk would be used to help orphaned infants or infants who are hospitalized," she tells the newspaper.

Brissy said...We already do, we can get loans, public assistants and all these other stuff. We have the American Red Cross, we have HEPA. Is it really too much to lend a dire and very poor country a hand? My goodness, where is the I in Team?

Are you kidding me with your comment???? You can name all the "so call stuff" (as you call it) that we have, but it does not mean anything when you can look only a few miles away from ANY direction and see young and old WITHOUT any food, shelter or clothes. Where do you live; on fantasy island? Obviously, you have never volunteered for a needy cause or you would see the many faces of hungry children, who are just begging not to go to bed hungry.
No one said we should NOT help others. Let's try this again, most are saying LET'S HELP OUR COUNTRY A LITTLE MORE OFTEN so that our country does not have to worry about it's own going hungry or without necessary surgeries etc, etc. Do you get it now?

heidi said...Brissy- There are programs but not everyone can get into them, I help alot of people in our country everyday who need money, food, clothing. You may think people in our country are ok but too many are not. We need to help people here and stop helping all the other countries. We have too many illegals here now that Obama is trying to get healthcare for and we will be stuck paying the bill for. We need to send all the illegals back and keep them out, including all the people that came from Haiti. I am sick of paying taxes for other people who do not belong here and I with many others will put a stop to it. One thing I will make sure of is that we get Obama out of office and back where he belongs and get an actual President in who has the common sense, intelligence, honesty, devotion, courage and compassion we need to run this country the right way, instead of this spineless, arrogant, ignorant, greedy, corrupt liar who is in now. Call for breast milk donations in Haiti goes bust!
Intentions may be good, but supply isn't safe or necessary, aid groups say.
Apparently no one really asked for the breast milk and none has been shipped.

Jeff said...My friend lives just north of Santa Domingo(Dominican Rep), he is originally from Upper Darby pa. He travels to haiti every week for business. He says that every time something good is done for haiti(building of Hospitols, schools etc) That the people there just tear it down to steal the metal etc. They have no trees becuase they burn them for firewood, as a result the soil is poor and farming is bad.His exact word was "animals" To fix haiti, you need to put a tough, honest government first.lemme know when you find one. But helping any baby is a good thing.

I am working to get my milk sent over as well, and it has actually started a massive supply drive though my company, Better Way Moms. We're still working on getting our milk in, and maybe I'll use this company instead! I would love for you to read the article I wrote about it as well. You can visit the link by going to betterwaymoms.com. It's right at the top of the page.
