Music Review: "C'mon" by Renee & Jeremy

There is such as thing as children's music that parents will actually like. Credit: One Melody Records
C'Mon by Renee and JeremyUpon first listen, there is absolutely nothing about C'mon, the second disc from L.A. duo Renee Stahl and Jeremy Toback, that screams: "This is a children's CD!" The opening chords of the first track, "Share," might make you think you're hearing a new single by Snow Patrol -- not something a preschool teacher is likely to pop into her boombox for free play time. Then the title song comes along spreading the kind of infectious joy usually associated with a sixties-era anthem like "Love Train." After that, the sophisticated arrangements and dazzling melodies just keep coming. What Renee & Jeremy give kids (and their parents) is straight-up, hook-filled alternapop. The songs just happen to have positive, uplifting, kid-friendly lyrics with messages about things like playground safety and delayed gratification.
In the way they play "grown-up songs for kids," Renee & Jeremy are a perfect example of the new wave of family music. It's not just for the little ones anymore. Sure, there are very successful artists who stick with the more traditional, toddler-centric musical approach -- and there is a definitive market and need for those artists -- but the post-Raffi, post-Wiggles sophistication of bands like Renee & Jeremy comes as welcome relief to a generation of parents who spend just as much time listening to their kids' playlists as they do iTunes Discovery Downloads.
Still, as grown-up-friendly as they are, Renee & Jeremy's riffy guitars and sweetly smooth vocals make their songs just as enjoyable to kids who are not yet old enough to realize that LMNO isn't one letter. They make you understand why so many artists in the children's music genre prefer the label "family music" -- these songs are for everybody.

my grandsons.
