School Asks Cops to Fine Foul-Mouthed Students

Students at a Windsor, Conn., high school caught dropping the F-bomb and using other curse words will soon learn a new four-letter word: fine.

The Windsor High School principal has asked police officers assigned to the building to charge swearing students with creating a public disturbance.

That charge carries a $103 fine.

Principal Russell Sills notified parents about the new practice in a letter sent home last month. The policy went into effect this week.

"I told the kids we all know all these words," Sills tells the Hartford Courant. "The reality is you make a conscious choice not to use those words here. We're hoping we don't have to hand out a lot of tickets."

Students differed on their reactions to the policy, according to the Courant.

"I don't have $103. That's too much. We've got enough problems already. I can't even afford lunch," junior Tyshawn Hicks tells the newspaper.

Sophomore Alisha Perreira, 15, says the policy will make a difference.

"It's a lot of money," she tells the Courant. "I would learn my lesson not to swear anymore."

The practice of using police intervention to stop swearing has been used at other area schools, the newspaper reports.

"We've done this in the past on a number of occasions," Windsor Police Chief Kevin Searles tells the Courant. "By issuing an infraction, it kind of alerts the youngster that, 'Hey, this is a serious thing you're doing and you have to be held accountable.' In the past it was very effective."
