Toxic Teddy Bears Pulled From Target Shelves
Filed under: In The News, Alerts & Recalls
Target Corp. has been notified that its Valentine's Day "Message Bears" have illegal levels of lead. Ryan Nestle, Center for Environmental Health / AP
This Valentine's Day, watch out for Toxic Teddy Bears.
The California-based Center for Environmental Health (CEH) found toxic levels of lead in Target's Valentine's Day Message Bears, according to published reports. So they sent a message of their own to Attorney General Jerry Brown, who told Target to recall the cute and potentially deadly stuffed animals. Brown's office also asked that the popular mega-store take the bears back whether or not customers still have their receipts.
The bad news bears in question come in two varieties -- a pink teddy emblazoned with "XOXO" and a brown version that says "I Love U." The bears were manufactured in China.
"Target's initial investigation indicates this product had compliant testing results when it was shipped," says Target spokesperson Beth Hanson. The company has since pulled the bears from store shelves, she says.
Oddly enough, one can still purchase a teddy-like product called a "Message Bear" from -- are you sitting down? -- messagebears.com. Yes, there's a Valentine's Day version. No word on lead levels, however.

Jimmy Wang said...In truth, the people who are really making the money is American retailer/marketing department. Look at what happens to Apple IPOD..It cost about $5 to make in China and a typical Apple Stores sell it at $200-250/piece. American company will not budge to Chinese demand by offering more pay for their manufacturing goods. Remember all the stuff were made in Taiwan. American companies will forced the Taiwanese manufacturer to export all the good to the US and reimport them back to Taiwan so the government can make money twice. It was disgusting move by both government and now they do not do that anymore after a change in government in Taiwan. So who is the true evil? You decide

gg said...So much for quality goods from China. Anybody that thinks this type of thing is going to change is wrong until the American consumer refuses to buy products made in China

Pam G. said...How much longer are we going to allow China to poison us before our government steps in and says enough with the imports? That is the major problem with our economy. We allowed our government to sign a free trade agreement that sent all of our jobs to Asia. Now, not only did most of our manufacturing jobs go to China, but we are being "rewarded" by being slowly poisoned. Enough is enough. Americans need to STOP buying foreign goods.

mariaitaliana33 said...Not buying American is problem No. 1. Problem #2 is there were concerns already established about the bears safety; and yet, they still allowed it to be placed on shelves to be sold.

The average American factory worker is just as retarded as the average Chinese one; he's just lazier and much better paid. And btw, Honda is Japanese.

Bill said...I went to Bob's Stores the other day to but a new pair of Timberland boots. Over the past five years it seems like the quality boots have been going down as the prices are going up. First the traditional Timberland boots if you got them wet a few times the sole would start coming apart ( these boots used to last me at least a year or more ). So I spent more money on their Timberland Pro's the soles stayed adhered but they were only lasting six to eight months. Now I've been buying them every six months or less the leather is crap. So I look in at the label and saw they were made in China. Then I looked in every pair of boots in the store every pair of boots every brand was made in China except for one pair of Chippuas ( 1 pr.made in USA ) and one pair of Timberland Pro's made in Dominica Republic. I ended up buying the Timberlands from D.R. because The Chip's didn't fit right. I an 100% for buying American and will find a good boot made in USA f-uck China!!!!

Terry said...I purchased Valentine heart lights from Target. After I opened them, I read the label. It stated the wire had lead, which causes cancer. Wash your hands after using. I returned them all to Target. Our country spent a lot of time and effort getting rid of lead from our paints, childrens toys, dishes, etc. Why oh why are we letting items in from China with lead, undoing all the hard work we did to get rid of it in the first place. Read your labels, we are no longer protected like we used to be.
