If You Learned It Then You Should Have Got An 'A' On It

We are plotzing from cuteness. Beyonce may have nabbed the awards for Single Ladies, but these kids at Milwaukee's HOPE Christian Schools receive our gold star for ingenuity, creativity and a darn good idea for getting an important message out there.
Especially heartwarming is seeing the admins and faculty joining in on the number.
It all started at the annual HOPE Idol video contest in the fall, which is a very big deal at the school.
"Actually, there's a lot of good-natured smack talk in the summer about the competition and what they're planning to do," says school spokesperson Wendy Greenfield.
And that's just from the teachers. Sixth-grade teacher Megan Huff, a dancer herself, was the one who wrote the smartypants lyrics ("I get no detentions. Did I mention? Hard work is my intention.") and choreography. A bow-tied Principal Patrick Hurley joined in by spontaneously mugging some nifty moves, "which is very typical of him," adds Greenfield. "He's a hilarious person. The kids love him."
Lead singer, sixth-grader Jada Rogers, and her girls Charmaine Taylor, left, and Yasmuir Higgins, right, knocked it out of the park with their Jsetting, a la Sasha Fierce. Even the school's director of operations, Paul Berger, and beloved food lady, Shirley Wood, got rhythmic cameos.
While the students had fun making the video, they have a bigger goal in mind. "They want to reach one million viewers," says Greenfield. "They want to show kids that it's cool to be smart and study."
Note to Mrs. Jay Z...if you can, please send them all gold rings.

Diane said...Cute, but it just goes to show that grammar is out the window in today's schools. It should be "GOTTEN" an A.

jinshil said...Both "have got" and "have gotten" are correct. The preference for which one you use is regional.

"GOT AN A ON IT".

HappyThoughts said...The Grammar Girl Web site says, "Likewise, all four sources I consulted about the 'have got' issue agree that this phrase is, in fact, good English." The school was clearly trying to mirror the lyrics from Beyonce's song, i.e., "Should have put a ring on it." Just enjoy the video, Diane. It's so cute!

Diane said...I didn't say I didn't enjoy it. In fact, I said it was cute. I do have a sense of humor, you know.
Besides, your statement is poor grammar, as well.
"Good grammar" should be "proper gramar".
Sheesh.

Diane said...As far as "have got" being acceptable grammar, it depends on how it is used. To say "I have got a cold" would be correct. It means I currently have something. But when you mean to say that you should have obtained something, proper American English is "should have gotten."
Not that it matters much. This video is cute and entertaining. The kids probably had a good time making it.

Sheesh.

Bushy808 said...Its a nice song, but its been done almost to the word. Search up a song called 'All my Single Asians' and its been out for almost a year now. Its on YouTube and its nearly the SAME exact song. These 3 girls may have done a bit better video, but I still think the idea is taken.

violagrrl said...Actually, I just watched your Single Asians video and it's NOTHING like Scholar Ladies!!! The lyrics in both videos have nothing in common. The Scholar Ladies clearly weren't copying anyone! This is such a special group of kids! Congrats!!!

P.S. who really cares if it was already done by Asian students? I have never seen it, and I live in America. The American version and exposure impacts OUR kids who like this music, but the lyric changes have a more positive message to inspire them to endeavor their goals through hard work.
