We are plotzing from cuteness. Beyonce may have nabbed the awards for Single Ladies, but these kids at Milwaukee's HOPE Christian Schools receive our gold star for ingenuity, creativity and a darn good idea for getting an important message out there.
Especially heartwarming is seeing the admins and faculty joining in on the number.
It all started at the annual HOPE Idol video contest in the fall, which is a very big deal at the school.
"Actually, there's a lot of good-natured smack talk in the summer about the competition and what they're planning to do," says school spokesperson Wendy Greenfield.
And that's just from the teachers. Sixth-grade teacher Megan Huff, a dancer herself, was the one who wrote the smartypants lyrics ("I get no detentions. Did I mention? Hard work is my intention.") and choreography. A bow-tied Principal Patrick Hurley joined in by spontaneously mugging some nifty moves, "which is very typical of him," adds Greenfield. "He's a hilarious person. The kids love him."
Lead singer, sixth-grader Jada Rogers, and her girls Charmaine Taylor, left, and Yasmuir Higgins, right, knocked it out of the park with their Jsetting, a la Sasha Fierce. Even the school's director of operations, Paul Berger, and beloved food lady, Shirley Wood, got rhythmic cameos.
While the students had fun making the video, they have a bigger goal in mind. "They want to reach one million viewers," says Greenfield. "They want to show kids that it's cool to be smart and study."
Note to Mrs. Jay Z...if you can, please send them all gold rings.

to Single Ladies, or nobody knows how to parody
any of her other music videos besides "Single
Ladies". In fact, I challenge anyone on YouTube
to do a parody of every one of Beyonce &
Destiny's Child's greatest videos, in a 10-minute
Megamix. Ring the alarm, you've been doing
this too long!

For anyone else worried about the grammar in the video, it doesn't need to be grammatically correct when they are trying to make it as close to the one that Beyonce made as they can. I think they did a splendid job on it as far as spreading the message about achieving good grades and completing school, (graduating). They mentioned the year 2016 so they obviously have a goal of graduation in mind when they made the video.
Great job to everyone involved!!!

It was a bang up job though! Congratulations.

angel said...kudos to you, emily. what a great multi-tasker you are-- building up and tearing down simultaneously. What in the world does the population of white students have to do with this video? Do you honestly think that if there were white students in attendance, that the WHITE administration prevented them from participating? How stupid, and completely irrelevant. Most likely this school is in, or near, a black neighborhood, which explains the entirely black population of the student body. Furthermore, my son has attended private schools in predominantly black neighborhoods, as well as charter schools in predominantly white neighborhoods. My experience is that if the majority of the student population is black, whites have no desire to send their kids there. Therefore, the only valid reference that your comment makes is that segregation is still alive.

They are children, who did a GREAT JOB and are sending a positive message!!! We could all stand to learn from them!! I'm very impressed with the creativity and hard work that went into the project!! :)

Taking the time to make the video, and including everyone, shows how serious they are about putting the message out there for the public to see. I'd love to see more stories like this when I read the news - it actually made me feel good!

Cheryl said...OMG! This was so cute. It was so refreshing to see this in an educational way. To see the entire school involved including staff was so cool! And regarding your comment Diane, I guess you are referring to the teacher because she's the one who wrote the "smartypants" lyrics, so you're really insulting that woman in the video who has worked years towards her degree and helping students learn. I can't believe that someone would make such a negative comment like that when it's all about these kids being motivated to do well in school. You are the epitome of a "hater." BTW, do you have a Masters in Education...an English teacher...a teacher at all...do you write for a living? Just wondering....
