ParentDish recently caught up with Debbie Phelps, mother of gold medal swimmer Michael Phelps, to chat about parenting at poolside. Her daughters Hilary and Whitney also were elite swimmers. In her book, "A Mother for All Seasons," Debbie, a middle school principal near Baltimore, opens up about her life. In a recent interview with ParentDish, she spoke about happy and challenging times. An edited version of the conversation follows.
ParentDish: What goals did you have for your children when they started swimming?
Debbie Phelps: I just wanted them to enjoy what they were doing. I wanted them to succeed. I wanted to set the bar high for them, so they would continuously strive.
PD: In your book, you write about "excesses" of swim parents. What were you referring to?
DP: I've had parents say to me, "My child has this many trophies and ribbons but they want to stop swimming." The parent doesn't want them to stop. If Michael didn't love the sport, would he have been able to execute the performance he did in 2008? I'm not a coach. But as a parent, I don't think so.
PD: What advice would you give to parents hoping their child will make the Olympics, even be the next Michael Phelps?
DP: This is just Debbie talking. But my goal was never for Michael to be an Olympian. That was never even a thought in my head. That was Michael's goal.
P: In your book, you write about your own children having setbacks in swimming. One example is Whitney's struggles with injuries and an eating disorder.
DP: I never had two children in the same pool. I had three different athletes going three different places every night. I wasn't the one seeing Whitney in a suit all the time. I'd pick her up from practice. They [girls on the team] had on their flannel bottoms and hoodies. So I didn't detect that eating disorder. Shame on me as a mother. Whitney's goal was to make the 1996 Olympic team [a goal she fell short of]. She was going to do everything she could to become faster. Instead, it was a detriment to her health and performance.
PD: After the high points at the 2008 Olympics, Michael has had some low ones, too. Some parents reading this probably will be wondering: Was Debbie angry with Michael last February? [when a photo surfaced of Michael smoking from a marijuana pipe].
DP: Disappointed, but not angry. When I speak to groups, the first question I ask is: Has anyone here ever made a mistake? Because there isn't anyone on the face of the earth who has never made one. It just so happens some people's mistakes get broadcast through the media while others do not. We all do things that are foolish. But they are life lessons. That's how we grow.

James said...So, you bellieve that anyone who smokes pot or experiments with drugs has a drug problem. According to that logic, anyone who has sex before marriage must be a sex addict. Perhaps we should also say any teen who drinks before he or she is of legal age is an alcoholic.
If we throw away everyone who has made bad decisions, we will be throwing out the proverbial baby with the bathwater.
I would like to ask you one question. How did you become so perfect that you can pass judgement and sentence on the rest of the world?

I can say, because I'm a single mother, that raising a child is hard but its about the love that you have for your child that makes them better. You have to have goals as a parent before your children can set goals for themselves and Debbie has done a great job at setting such goals as a parent and her children have done the same. All three children are great gifts from God and they are blessed with a great mom. The boy did make a mistake. And for those who say that its not a mistake then tell me what it is!?! A bad judgement=mistake. The wrong decision=mistake. Look up definitions why don't ya.
Debbie--stay strong and focused on you and the betterment of your children. They have grown so well because of you! Good luck now and in the future and God bless!

Daniel Kenny said...Pot is a very relaxing drug to take so I am told. It wares off in a couple of hours they say...Not. First off I know a young person whose mother used pot. The youngster was born completely brain dead due to the mother smoking too much pot. It may or may not do that much damage to you, I don't know. Secondly, it is illegal. Now I know that going over the speed is not legal either, but go fast enough, it's jail time. believe me, pot does have a medical effect on you if you smoke enough.

Hey Kris!! said...Jim, no child needs both parents, yes it does help them if they are both around, but why have someone there who does not want to be there. That just makes it worse in the long run. By the way I am a single mother of 2 wonderful children, I raise my children on my own and no we do not need their father, where he is at in his life its best he stay away. My children are very smart straight A students, one in high school taking honors classes. They will both go to college and make great adults later in life. They have everything they want and need. I teach them right from wrong and expect highly of them and spoil them deeply, but since they are great kids they deserve it. And all this I do on my own. And about Phelps, it was a mistake, we are all allowed them, that is how we grow and learn truly right from wrong. I think she is an excellent mother and I applaud her.

leolux10 said...@Dale You're slow. Getting caught smoking pot on camera wouldn't have been the "mistake" if Mike hadn't been smoking it in the first place. Why can't people enjoy themselves without being under the influence of some foreign intoxicant? It's pretty pathetic, really. Mike's too old to be making such "mistakes". Which is why i'm inclined to think he was well aware of what he was doing. Just weak when it came to possible peer-pressure. Unless he's just dumb enough to make such a "mistake" all on his own. Who REALLY cares, at the end of the day? Besides his loved ones, of course.

Rita Tomaszewski said...Mrs Phelps you are a person of such high hopes for each of your
children your dedication shines through as you discuss them. I know it must have been very surprising to you to discover your sons choice of product that he had used. Our children know better about using any and all of these products but being who they are will try anything at all. One cannot walk with their offsprings 24/7 but they do make choices that are not in their best interests. One would think with the descipline one uses in learning about sports and the regime they have to follow would make them very savy about a lot of things. Michael's case he has displayed to you that sometimes one is willing to take chances even when it is not to their best interests. Relax Mrs Phelps just let this be a lesson to oneself, a person can do foolish things to oneself even with the best of parents. Kuddos to you Mrs. Phelps for your forth right ability to see it for what it is . Your son is still a loving person under a great deal of pressure to always do what is right. I do so hope he can follow through and not only be his own person with his life but always remain true to his values. Drug use is not to be even used for recreational purposes and to look like everyone else
just having a relaxing moment. This is how it all starts for the lack of a proper choice one had better not follow down that road and think it will be ok,

Pot isn't the problem, it's the idiots who think they're cooler cuz they smoke it. It's the goobers who smoke with a baby crawling around their living room or worse yet when the baby is still attached to the placenta (thats unbirthed for u morons). I love how people with low IQs always fall back on: "It's wrong cuz its illegal." So was interracial marriage 60 years ago. So was alcohol 90 years ago.
Give us all a break Republicans, you had your 8 years. Now shut up and let us have ours.

ADD doesn't just go away just because one is an Olympic champion and from what I have read on his life, he has a pretty severe case of ADD. This is what makes him who he is. Nothing wrong. However, I was not surprised to read of his poor choice by using pot, but hey, I am a former teenager from the 60's and smoking pot does not surprise me when I read it about anyone. What surprises me when someone says they have never even tried it. I will not judge. Mistakes are how we learn. I think all of us can think of many athletes especially pros who are dealing with that right now.

In michael Phelps' case the united states of america. even though there is a lively debate concurrent with the legality of micheals decisions, at the moment those actions are illegal and outside of the upstanding citizens routine. as a representation of our country on the international stage, i wish michael would have been able to get a hold of his impulses in the same fashion that he surely has had control over his strictly regimented schedule prior to the olympics....at least in the sense that he volunteered to present to the world a model of physical fitness and physical acheivment, he should have also been concious of his obligation to present a morally upright attitude towards the rulings of our legal system....at least as long as said rulings remain in effect...for the remainder of which is in doubt....to provide a strong image for the youth not only of our country, but for all those who look up to the champion and want to hold him in a light of nobility and integrity.

How many great artists and great politicians and world leaders have
done things here and there. We should focus on the achievements. It is hypocracy to focus on that incident. Hypocracy and just plain DUMB. Phelps is STILL a great role model and a GREAT human being and his mom SHOULD NOT BE SHAMED!!!!!!!!

An intelligent person can see past a law that is ridiculous. I'm not saying you should think pot is for you, but it isn't as bad as some say. Alcohol is far more dangerous. The world would be a much better place if everyone smoked pot and didn't drink. Someone will say if you smoke to much it's very bad for you. Well so is anything else. Eat 5 pizza's and see how you feel...Find out why pot was made illegal and you will get angry. It's a racist law at it's core.
