Faith Of Our Fathers? Survey Says Not So Much

"Faith of our fathers, holy faith, we shall be true to thee 'til death."
Maybe so. Maybe no. The old hymn might not ring true anymore.
A study released Wednesday by the Pew Forum on Religion & Public Life concludes that young Americans are significantly less religious than their fathers, mothers and grandparents.
Pew researchers interviewed more than 35,000 Americans about their religious views.
They found one in four "millennials" (that is, people born after 1980 who came of age around the millennium) characterize themselves as atheist, agnostic or nothing in particular. Fewer than one in five members of Generation X (born between 1965 and 1980) expressed similar religious doubts when they were in their early 20s.
Only 13 percent of baby boomers (born between 1946 and 1964) were unaffiliated with a religious tradition when they were young adults, according to the survey and comparison with past data.
None of this means the younger generation doesn't have a prayer.
In fact, 45 percent of the millennials surveyed say they pray daily -- about the same percentage as generations past. They also believe in an afterlife and concepts such as heaven, hell and miracles at roughly the same percentages.
"While growing numbers of people are unaffiliated, it's not necessarily a sign that they're committed secularists," Greg Smith, a senior researcher at the Pew Forum, tells CNN. "We're seeing among young people that there are ways of practicing faith and being religious outside" of church.
Roughly two in three millennials surveyed say they believe in God with absolute certainty, similar to the number of Gen Xers who reported such certainty about God a decade ago.
People tend to get more religious as they get older, Pew researchers tell CNN. A third of baby boomers attend church at least once a week these days. Only a quarter of them did in the 1970s, according to Pew.
The Rev. J. Hill Jr. of New York's Riverside Church admits to CNN that church can be a hard sell sometimes for young folk. But he tells the news network he gets a big response when he rallies young people to help Hurricane Katrina victims in Louisiana.
"Church is difficult because young people today want to engage actively," Hill tells CNN. "They just want to experience God."

i feel bad for all of you for letting this get you all fired up.
i mean, atheist, Christan, redneck, pink or lime green, we are all people. this is just meant to be an interesting survey for people who are interested to comment on. not to fight over beliefs
why cant we just accept each others beliefs, and let them be?
after all, most statistics and surveys are skewed

impartial observer said...Yup, the atheists know it all. Therefore, they have the right to be as intolerant as they choose. Their most famous, or infamous(as you choose) spokesperson here in America was Madeline Murray O'Hair, murdered by one of her own workers for a pile of gold coins(I love irony), who called the disowning of her own son her postnatal abortion. He was "beyond human forgiveness" because he took up a life of faith. Those were her words, by the way. Thought to have stolen between 2 and 18 million dollars from her organizations believers. Believed in allowing youngsters as young as 10 years old to participate in any and all sexual activity, had statues in her home of people participating in bestiality. The list goes on and on. Just a miserable human being, and yet according to the beliefs propagated by Christians, NOT beyond redemption. And Christians are the intolerant ones?
Another atheist who has gained some prominence for his lack of belief is the big guy from Penn and Teller.(never thought they were that funny, so I'm not sure who is who) I like his viewpoint though. He says "Even though I choose not to believe, if I had faith in a message of hope, forgiveness, and eternal life, why would I not share it?" He sincerely doesn't understand how those of his beliefs are so hatred filled toward those who differ. Rock on Mr. Penn or Teller!!

Merrily said...This is for Josh: You have a very good idea going and if it ever came to fruition, the world would be at peace. Religion is why wars are fought. Everyone wants to think their "religion" is the "only" religion. My problem is the Christians who think that the Bible was written precisely as fact and will not waver in their beliefs about what science has proven true. I wonder if they use computers - they certainly didn't in the Bible. I can't say that I know the Bible from cover to cover but I do believe that Jesus Christ wanted us to all love one another and not except for the Jews, Gays, etc. Love Everyone - as a child that God made.
Just a side note: I am a 67 year old heterosexual woman. It is never too late to learn new things!

I applaud the Millenials. Oh, and to all of you religious nut-jobs: save your hateful rhetoric for someone who gives a rat's behind. Your Gods are ALL LIES.

There are some things that are bigger than yourself, and just because you rail against them venomously, it doesn't validate your ravings. Some people, like myself, have had an actual experinece with God, seen him work notable miracles, lierally felt his presence, seen actual angels (spiritual beings). Now, having experienced that reality, it would be INSANE for me to deny what I have actually experienced in my own life. That's what your really basing your argument on basically, right? Seeing is believing? It would be foolish for me to deny then. Im not telling you to believe. Some will necer see truth. Maybe it is your sad, pitiful lot to remain in darkness, and never know anything in this life, but the rudimentary existence of those lacking spirituality.

Yeah, the perverse immorality of religious reichists trying to force their narrow religious opinions upon everyone else and indoctrinating children from early on into their narrow mindset. That's perverted, to abuse such young minds in such manner with adult religious fantasies and brainwashing. It's no different on this side of the planet than what's happening on the other side.
Face the facts: religion is just another scam by those who prey upon human insecurities about life and death issues.
"Kids now days are TAUGHT to be IMMORAL and PERVERSE."
Speak for yourself. If you are teaching your children to hate others because of differences in religious opinion, you are the one who is "immoral and perverse."
"Walk into ANY clothing store kids shop in, go to movies or turn on a show THEY watch......nothing but sex and perversion."
Get your mind out of the gutter. Sex is a natural part of our nature and what makes us human. Like food, people have different sexual appetites that are pleasing to their nature. Just because you don't like how others indulge their God-given nature doesn't make that nature "perverse." That's just the nonsense of brainwashing that you have been raised into.
"America WANTED immoral kids.....well...you're getting them."
If they grow up to be religious bigots who hate everyone because of the religious opinions of mentally unbalanced religious bigots...
....yeah, they will be immoral. Even perverse. That is what arises out of extreme religionism...the Dark Ages.

To everyone else: We live in a dark and troubled world. How sad it would be if all our faith in prayers, miracles, and God were snuffed out by an cold generation.
If anyone cares to actually look into the matter, they'd find that many teens and twenty-somethings are "atheists" or "agnostic", not because they've actually taken the time to formulate their own thoughts, but because nowadays it's "trendy" to have a dismal outlook and not be on board with faith in God.
I feel sorry for atheists. It's very depressing to think that this is all there is to life. It makes life quite trivial and meaningless.

How can you deduce such from a simple misspelled word?

It doesn’t matter ‘zilch’ to me and countless others.

I am not the least depressed, but rather relieved of the nonsense of organized religion/s.

Some of you who already wrote in need to go back to school to check on your grammar. Let me put it this way: If I am wrong about my faith, I will never know the difference. But if you are wrong, you will know about it right away.

Georgianna said...dcbrandtpd: Wow. Usually people who disagree with organized religion disagree because they think religious people are intolerant. I'm glad you didn't choose that platform, but instead outright showed everyone your OWN intolerance. You obviously have a lot of hate, bitterness, and disrespect for anyone who dares believe in something.
Also, I dare you to show me ONE verse that tells me to stone someone. You do know how to differentiate between a story with a moral lesson and someone actually telling you to do something, right?
You see, when the Bible contains a parable or event, it's so you can LEARN from it, it's not telling you to go out and repeat the event. And you clearly haven't actually READ the Bible.
"Love your neighbor as yourself"
"Let he who is without sin cast the first stone"
Also, I expressed my opinions, but never attacked your beliefs or told you what to do with them, and I definitely refrained from calling anyone "pathetic", so thank you for trashing mine and displaying to everyone just how sad you really are.
You really need to learn how to just chill, sit back, and repeat after me: "To each their own."
