School Bans Parents from Wearing PJs at Drop Off

It would seem that our friends across the pond are a bit uptight when it comes to pajamas. First, a supermarket told shoppers not to show up in their PJs. Now, a school is telling parents that wearing pajamas and slippers when they drop off their children will no longer be tolerated.
The Daily Mail reports that Joe McGuinness, the head teacher at St. Matthew's Primary School in Belfast, United Kingdom, sent a note home that said, "arriving at the school in pyjamas is disrespectful to the school and a bad example to set to children."
The Mail quotes McGuinness as saying parents who commit this sin are "slovenly and rude."
When it comes to other matters of parenting, some of the teachers appear to have slightly lower standards. The Mail quotes one shaper of young minds (via an unspecified online forum) as saying, "at least they have bothered to bring their children to school/collect them on time."
McGuinness tells the Mail there were "up to 50" parents showing up at school in sleepwear, and that no one has complained since he issued his no-jammies edict a few months ago.
Have you ever worn pajamas when you dropped off or picked up the kids at school? Or have you seen other parents in PJs?

I don't see a big ordeal about this, lets say if the parent is too ill to get dressed but good enough to take their kids to school. I think as long as they wear a bathroom over it, I don't see a problem.

I drop my daughter off at preschool in mine all the time. I am in my early 20s however and my daughter's school is part of the university that I attend. It is where many college students take classes in early childhood education and at my university girls go to class in their pjs regularly. So maybe my situation is a little different, and I know that once I graduate and go out into "the real world" I am probably not going to be able to get away with that anymore. I think the biggest issue is what type of pjs are being worn. I have on sweatpants/pj pants and a tshirt with some uggs, that is quite different from a leopard print silky nightie and fuzzy slippers, but who in their right mind would go out in public like that anyway? I agree with another poster that said at least we are not dropping off our children while looking like a stripper or porn star. My child is loved, dressed, fed, well mannered, attends regularly, tests above average and I am (along with my husband) actively involved in her class, with her teachers and the school in general. I think that is more important than what I occasionally wear to drop her off. Maybe if people spent more time on their children and less time on primping before they dropped them off, maybe our kids would be better off.

I am glad YOU are NOT my mother. I would never take my children to school in PJs. WTF cannot you get your butt dressed. Show some respect for your children. Other kids are gonna notice and tease your child. What if you get a flat tire? Teachers, school crossing guards, other students, busdrivers, etc.... have managed to get up, eat breakfast, perform personal hygiene and get to work. You are a lazy bum. I don't care if you work at home or not, get up and get dressed for the day. You probably sit around in nasty sweat pants all day. Way to be a good Mom and teach your children about self-respect!

You should not walk out of your home in Pajamas, those are for sleep wear only, not for public viewing. This shows kids it is okay to be Lazy and have no high standards.

Some folks just aren't morning people, but at least they do get up and get the kids to school. And most of the time, you don't have to get out of the car to drop your kid off anyway, so who is going to see you? And who cares if they do? I work at home two days a week and would take my kid to school in my jammies once in a while. Although I must admit one time I wish I hadn't! I stopped to let my son out and when I tried to leave, my transmission died. This was back before cell phones, so I had to go into the front office to call a tow truck then have the tow truck driver take me home. Yep, embarrassing!!!

Do u want your kids outside in their underwear at school, then why wear yours. a quick solution is sweat suits. they are quick and easy to slip on please consider it.

This is the new examples for their kids. The meaning of dressing appropriately means nothing. Once upon a time ALL people took pride in how they look. The clothing for: school, work, church, weddings, funerals and for playing or hanging out.Going out in public in PJ's means, you are in the same clothes you were sleeping in all night. So you have curlers on too? I had friends who would never leave the house without make-up. Let alone in sleep wear. But this newer generation goes to the movies, department stores, grocery stores, anywhere with what I think is a lack of self-respect. Not everyone agrees but not everyone has to accept it either. Someone ask Dr Phil.

I stay in my car and wear a jacket instead of a bathrobe. I would much prefer to be wearing clothes, but it's more important to have my kids dressed for school than me.

KIttymom said...For heavens sake, take your shower at night or have the girls take their shower at night. Sounds to me like the girls are taking WAY too long in the shower anyway. Perhaps you ought to consider a new water heater. Yours may be going south real soon if it isn't the girls taking too long. Better, get up earlier and take a shower before the girls. Just a couple of thoughts for you.
