School Bans Parents from Wearing PJs at Drop Off

It would seem that our friends across the pond are a bit uptight when it comes to pajamas. First, a supermarket told shoppers not to show up in their PJs. Now, a school is telling parents that wearing pajamas and slippers when they drop off their children will no longer be tolerated.
The Daily Mail reports that Joe McGuinness, the head teacher at St. Matthew's Primary School in Belfast, United Kingdom, sent a note home that said, "arriving at the school in pyjamas is disrespectful to the school and a bad example to set to children."
The Mail quotes McGuinness as saying parents who commit this sin are "slovenly and rude."
When it comes to other matters of parenting, some of the teachers appear to have slightly lower standards. The Mail quotes one shaper of young minds (via an unspecified online forum) as saying, "at least they have bothered to bring their children to school/collect them on time."
McGuinness tells the Mail there were "up to 50" parents showing up at school in sleepwear, and that no one has complained since he issued his no-jammies edict a few months ago.
Have you ever worn pajamas when you dropped off or picked up the kids at school? Or have you seen other parents in PJs?

Rena said...I totally agree, what the heck is the big deal with wearing pajamas? I just dont get it, Most PJ's are like sweatpants now anyway, so i guess we have to ban those to! wth! So if I understand all of you right, unless we are dressed to the hilt in dress pants and office suits we cant drop out kids off at school? I dont see what the big difference is between pj bottoms and sweatpants? or jeans for that matter! And as far as you and the girls with the showering, that happens to me everyday, and Im sure as heck not going to MAKE my daughter, who cares about what she looks like, to get out of the shower sooner, so i can get ready to take her to school and then come home! It Does Not Make Sense!!!!

A steaming hot shouer is not necessary ... just warm enough to be comfortable. Suck it up .... show some self-asteem. I see women even in the grocery store in PJ's ... this is rediculous. PJ's are ment for sleeping or lounging around the house ... NOT IN PUBLIC!!!

CeCe said...You don't have to have a shower to pull on a pair of jeans and a Tshirt. Even sweats would be better than PJ's. Ever think you might have to get out of your car for some reason? No, probably not. Thniking seems to be a thing of the past for mamy parents!

Why do you care. Is she taking drugs before driving them? Are these parents beating them up then taking them to school? If there is child abuse then maby a butinski is appropriate. But NO ONE actually believes that leaving the house in PJs is abuse. As long as everything is covered it STILL LEAGLE. If they are flashing people then this would be a different article. I think its trashy to go out in sweats if your not working out. But its your bod, and if your not going on a date or to an interview, then do whatever you want. Thank GODS that its not a law. No one likes being told the way they do things is wrong. And I bet that I can find at least one thing for everyone commenting here that I think is wrong and they shouldnt do. Isnt it great that its none of my beezwax and Im not the boss of you. GET OVER YOURSELVES!!!!! go back to whatever you stupify yourselves with on TV and let the little things go.

curt said...What difference does it make as long as they ( usually moms ) have some type of clothing on. I have seen women in retail stores in their PJ's. NOW that is discusting. BUT what is even more discusting is to see an obese woman in spandex, with panties 4 sizes to small. Now that is discusting.

Making it a rule however is not the way it should be handled either. It is a personal choose. We have rules for everything under the sun. Hey if you are sick, not getting out of the car then whatever. You have to think yourself and what image you want to pass on to your kids. They pick up the small things and make it out to be what there minds see it as. It is our responsibility to make sure they KNOW whats really going on.

Lynn said...I think getting the kids to school so they can learn to spell "hygiene" is a little more important then dropping kids off in sleepware covered by a coat! What do you think?

Lee said...Yes, and it's a personal choice not a choose.

Aubree said...cheriturn3, I agree with EVERYTHING you said. We DO have to set examples for our children; laziness and excuses may not be the best examples... On the other hand, we should not be given rules and controls on every little thing in life.
lynn, hopefully they will teach our children the difference between "then" and "than" as well...

Fran said..."Sleepware"? Can you get that at a Tupperware party? Or must I look for "Tupperwear"?
After more than three decades as a copy editor, one thing I've learned is to be extra-careful with your own spelling when you're correcting someone else's!

Peg said...Lynn, so spelling sleepwear wrong is okay???
In any case, it's SLEEPwear!!! What you wear to bed, for Pete's sake!!!

Ebony said...Lynn - it's also "than" and not "then". If you're going to correct someone, you should probably know how to use your words.
It's about making sure your kids know how to spell "hygiene" AND teaching them self respect. You're pretty much telling your kids you don't care that much about yourself when you just roll out of bed and take them to school. Really, how hard is it to put on something decent?

Theresa said...How about also learning to spell sleepwear? If you are going to admonish someone about their spelling, make sure you don't make spelling errors while doing so.

girlyworld said...We also teach our kids to pick their battles. Meaning everything isn't worth getting upset over. Pick the important things in life to fight for. The Mother does't have a dress code for school the child does. The Mother isn't enrolled in school the child is. Get your mind back on teaching the kids! (YOU GET PAID TO DO that) FYI... I do not know what kind of Bible you read but I have never found where it states it is a SIN to be in a public place in PJ's. Its not like they are showing up in a Thong and Nightie.... MAN GROW UP.... PICK YOUR BATTLES!

kim said......parents have a richer job than you think...not just keeping them in school....getting there just in time.....it all goes by children will do what they see....they live by example.....they need to learn that in the real world, you get up early, you plan, you meet your goals of getting to school dressed and on time......its called survival skills!. lets not fight, lets try our best to remind our children certain things need to be addressed...laziness is not one of them
