School Bans Parents from Wearing PJs at Drop Off

It would seem that our friends across the pond are a bit uptight when it comes to pajamas. First, a supermarket told shoppers not to show up in their PJs. Now, a school is telling parents that wearing pajamas and slippers when they drop off their children will no longer be tolerated.
The Daily Mail reports that Joe McGuinness, the head teacher at St. Matthew's Primary School in Belfast, United Kingdom, sent a note home that said, "arriving at the school in pyjamas is disrespectful to the school and a bad example to set to children."
The Mail quotes McGuinness as saying parents who commit this sin are "slovenly and rude."
When it comes to other matters of parenting, some of the teachers appear to have slightly lower standards. The Mail quotes one shaper of young minds (via an unspecified online forum) as saying, "at least they have bothered to bring their children to school/collect them on time."
McGuinness tells the Mail there were "up to 50" parents showing up at school in sleepwear, and that no one has complained since he issued his no-jammies edict a few months ago.
Have you ever worn pajamas when you dropped off or picked up the kids at school? Or have you seen other parents in PJs?

BUTTON said...THIS IS HOW RIDICULOUS OUR SCHOOL SYSTEMS ARE GETTING!! MAYBE THEY SHOULD HAVE SCISSORS AT THE SCHOOL DOOR TO CUT THE HAIR THAT'S OVER THE KIDS EYES???
A GOOD SCHOOL DOESN'T MAJOR IN THE MINORS. IT TEACHES THE KIDS THE MAJORS, HELPS BUILD SELF ESTEEM IN THE KIDS, TEACHES THEM THAT THEY HAVE CHOICES IN LIFE AND EDUCATES THEM.
AS A FORMER TEACHER, I COULDN'T CARE LESS WHAT MOM'S WEAR DRIVING THEIR KIDS TO SCHOOL. THEY COULD ALWAYS DROP THEM OFF AROUND THE CORNER OR DOWN THE STREET.
GIVE ME A BREAK!!!!!
BY THE WAY.....WHO'S THE GUY IN THE WINDOW WITH THE BINOCULARS??? I BET HE'S CALLED "PEEPING TOM."

Ralph said...Worthless turd ! - I say it's time to get a new head teacher, Is his next step telling parents what to wear at all school functions ? Then perhaps setting the standards of what they wear in general public. Parent uniforms maybe? It might be fine to express a personal opinion as to what somebody wears in public, it's another thing altogether when you go DICKtating what people wear in public. Wonder if he sets the standard for the churchgoers too? Twit! I suppose next they won't be allowed to drop them off in mini skirts either !, or shorts ! Far more revealing than the ole pajamas I think .

Ms.Etiquette Incorp. said...Good Lord people! What are you teaching your child? It's NEVER OK to wear your PJ's to drop off your child at school and/or at the grocery store and paying bills etc, etc. You can't imagine how many people I've encountered at the grocery store wearing a "bathrobe", "house-slippers" and right down kinky "gowns as tops."
Proper attire will teach your child that you are ready to get your day started in a positive note! Our country, as precious as it is- is only harboring lazy-do-nothing parents who will not dress proper in a proper learning environment! God forbid, five minutes out of your hard-press schedule that you would at least brush your hair.

I wear a sweatshirt and pj bottoms to bed, which covers me sufficiently and is not see-through. Then I also wear a coat and even a hat to cover my bedhead. I don't think parents should wear something see-through or skimpy around anyone outside the bedroom, but especially when I don't get out of the vehicle when I drop off my son I don't think it should matter what I'm wearing. Also, my son knows that I get dressed when I get home. I don't think that's lazy at all, especially when I have two other young ones to get ready and chase around. I'm successful when I find time to get myself ready for the day! Try being a SAH mom, then judge.

When you wear pajamas outside the house, it sends the message that you are lazy, ignorant, and have no class. People- you are setting an example for the children. Don't expect them to dress nice and take pride in their appearance if you don't. Dress for the occasion to let people know you should be taken seriously. Have some respect for yourself so that others will respect you as well. There is no need to wear formal wear but do dress appropriately.

Brenda said...Some of these comments are pretty lame, as is the rule for how parents need to dress. I'm sorry, but no one is going to tell me how to dress except my boss. The parents are not attending the school, just dropping others off, so it is none of the schools business how they dress. Maybe if parents are walking into the school yes, or if the school has dress codes, possibley...but just to make a lame general rule is pretty stupid in my opinion. Parents have a lot of responsibility as it is, if they are single parents even more so. If they are gettng their kids to school on time, showing up for conferences, making sure their kids have their homework done, get enough sleep, eat healthy, etc does it really matter how the parents dress? There are parents who get up early and put on suits, but don't bother to check how their kids day went or who their friends are. I'm sorry, but in the scope of all that is important in parenting, how I dress is very low on the list. Also, for those of you who judge a parent as being irresponsible and teaching laziness to their kids because they are not dressed in street clothes when they drop their kid at school, open your mind a little bit please. Perhaps the parent works nights and has only slept 2 hours before they have to get their kid to school and then they are headed back home to bed? Maybe they work 2 jobs to make ends meet and provide for their children because their ex is a deadbeat dad, and mom finds time to be dressed and to all of their sporting events, band concerts and awards nights and the morning is the only hour or 2 she has to lounge around a bit before starting all over again, day after day. Maybe what mom is teaching her kids is how to take care of yourself so you can be a good parent, and that everyone needs to take a minute to relax whenever they can fit that time into their schedule. Or maybe she's teaching them that they don't have to follow everyone else, or dress the same as the models in the magazines, and it's not only ok, but good, to just be yourself. Not every mom is sitting at home in Victoria's Secret nightgowns waiting for the pool boy to come over after her husband leaves for work. Some moms are doing the best they can to do all they can to teach their children what's important in life, like an education, tolerance of diversity, accepting people who are different then you, volunteering in the community, staying away from drugs and alcohol, etc and wearing your pjs while you do this does not take away from the importance of the lesson or role model laziness or lack of self-respect in any way. At my kids school, kids sometimes wear pj pants to school. As a teacher, I don't mind, and find they are more relaxed and get better scores on tests then when they are wearing a dress with heels, or buttoned up shirt and tie. Also, my kids and I do community theater together and it is common for the kids to wear pjs for long rehearsals. The last thing I think the kids are learning there is laziness or lack of self respect, they are learning to be creative, be who they are, and accept others for who they are as well.

Angie said...Brenda, as a teacher you expressed yourself wonderfully. One thing was missing. In life there are RULES that must be followed to prevent disorder and chaos. We, as a society have to follow the laws of the state. The laws of the city and the laws of the schools. While many are not in favor of school uniforms, it does have a sence of equality. No one is better then the next. PJ's is a dress code that MANY schools have in everyone of our States. I'm sure the grandparents are tell the grandkids. "THAT IS NOT THE WAY I RAISED YOUR PARENT"

On one morning the middle son came back into the house and told us he missed the bus again. Never mind that the other four children managed to get to it on time, he missed it.
To make a point, we drove him to school while wearing our bathrobes and slippers, looking like Charles Manson with our hair all askew. But we did not drop him off at the curb; we marched him into the attendance office.
Needless to say, he never missed the bus again.

Heather said...I always wear my pj's to drop my kids off to school. As a mother of 4, I'm lucky to get them there on time. They are dressed nicely w/the hair combed & teeth brushed. However, if I had to walk my kids into the building, instead of dropping them off at the door, I would get dressed. My 10 yr. old daughter would die if I showed up in my pj's :).

Joe Papierz Jr said...I guess I'm old fashioned and was raised by old fashioned people but I can't understand why anyone would want to stay in their pajamas all day long unless they were sick. Yes, I'm getting old, I'm 69 years old this year but my parent always went straight from the bed to the bathroom when they woke up. They brushed their teeth, showered and got dressed every day and raised me the same way. Whether or not we were going to work, shopping or just watching TV most of the day we were fully dressed. If we were sick, the only change in routine would be to change into clean pajamas instead of getting dressed. People who don't take time to get dressed are just plain lazy.

Sifrina said...Mr. Papierz - Thank you! You are a better person for how you were raised and I think it's a refreshing attitude in this hyper-casual culture we live in (I keep waiting to see pajamas in nice restaurants where I live outside of Baltimore, which might as well be the birthplace of the "grunge look").
Anyone whose laziness outweighs their dignity and desire to be good role models for their children should take a close look in the mirror (literally). If you can barely get dressed because you have so many kids and too little time, and are barely getting your kids to school as is, that means you aren't very good at your job or have bitten off more than you can chew. Either way I despair for the children.
I work outside of the home (where my employer is not a relative and frowns on pajamas at work), but even on my days off I quickly pull it together in the a.m. before taking my son to school. It really takes just 3 minutes to put on an appropriate outfit, even with a newborn! And my son (who is also appropriately attired, even for public school) knows we will NEVER be late for school!!!!!

Joe Papierz Jr said...My parents raised three children. My mother was showered and dressed before she even woke us up for our showers and dressing routine. While we were dressing Mom fixed breakfast. My mother also had a job for a few years to help Dad out after we were old enough to get to and from school on our own. I think it was around the third grade. She worked at Sears Roebuck in downtown Miami and took the bus to work every day after we left for school. So don't tell me you "just don't have time to get dressed" your too lazy to get dressed nd just plain don't care.

"WTF cannot (sic) you get your butt dressed." Charming. YOU are offended that a parent would drop their child at school wearing pajamas (presumably in the car and not into the building) because you believe it fails to show the child respect. Your choice of language shows Interesting values and value judgments, dear.
