Students at the University of California, San Diego who threw an off-campus party could be in trouble with the administration. Not because of underage drinking or drug use. But because the party mocked Black History Month.
An invitation for the party, called a "Compton Cook Out," was posted on Facebook. Party organizers were allegedly members of the fraternity Pi Kappa Alpha, also known as Pike.
UCSD Pike president Garron Engstrom issued a statement saying that although the party was not an official Pike event, "we regret that members of our esteemed fraternity displayed an error in judgment, ignorance and racism, in choosing to spontaneously create a racially-offensive party theme. These values are in direct violation of Pi Kappa Alpha's code of conduct, and disciplinary actions will be taken with these members."
The Los Angeles Times reports that school Chancellor Marye Anne Fox e-mailed the student body and staff to say that the event showed "blatant disregard of our campus values" and that the school would hold a teach-in on Feb. 24, according to UPI.
Penny Rue, the university's vice chancellor for student affairs, says sanctions are being considered, pending an investigation, according to published reports.
"In hopes of showing respect [for Black History Month], the Regents community cordially invites you to its very first Compton Cookout," the invite read. It went on to describe desired behavior and dress for party attendees: Males should wear "anything FUBU, Ecko, Rockawear," while females were advised to behave like "Ghetto chicks," who were described as having "a very limited vocabulary, and attempt to make up for it, by forming new words, such as 'constipulated,' or simply cursing persistently, or using other types of vulgarities, and making noises, such as 'hmmg!' or smacking their lips, and making other angry noises, grunts and faces."
Local news station KTLA has the full text of the invitation as it appeared online. Here is a video report.
Ivan Evans, associate professor of sociology at UCSD, writes the following in an e-mail message that appears on the UCSD Web site: "I'm not surprised, but that doesn't make it any more odious or hard to take."

Shana said...Like the good professor stated, this does not surprise me, but it deeply saddens me. As college kids, their brains are not yet mature and don't think about the emotional ramifications that result from a party such as this. Hip hop and ghetto living is a culture but it does not define a race. We could similarly look at caucasians and point out cultural trends such as the mullet cut with the extra long piece of hair called the "tail." Again, this trend didn't define the caucasian race. To mock and demoralize a race in this way is completely disrespectful and I am glad that the university is entertaining the idea of imposing sanctions. I wish more universities would impose discipline in response to disrespectful actions such as the case of the Penn St. football player this year who ran out onto the field at a Minnesota home game and was mocked by the Gopher mascot as he kneeled to pray. I was appalled by this and never did hear as to whether any disciplinary action was taken against the mascot. Imagine that, a mascot designed to drum up fanfare and spirit, attempts to demoralize someone for giving praise to God. That student mascot should be stripped of his duties forever.
