Some of the world's most prominent fashion designers got to play dress-up with dolls recently in the name of style and charity.
And, when the dolls are Barbies, you can bet that play time gets glam. The Council of Fashion Designers of America asked 12 labels to accessorize Mattel's new Barbie Basics doll, who comes in a simple Little Black Dress with a whole slew of accessories sold separately.
The dolls were then auctioned off on eBay, raising more than $16,500 to benefit the CFDA's fashion scholarship program and other educational initiatives.
Leading the bids, and bringing in $7,500, was the Lorraine Schwartz Barbie, who was dripping in diamonds. A doll designed by Devi Kroell, an up-and-coming New York luxury fashion house, was sold for $1,075.
Other designers who accessorized one-of-a-kind dolls included Alexis Bittar, Tory Burch, Botkier, Philip Crangi, Betsey Johnson, Isaac Mizrahi, Rachel Roy, Lorraine Schwartz, Kate Spade and and Albertus Swanepoel.
