PETA Tells Nevada School to Dump Donkey Basketball
Filed under: In The News, Weird But True
People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is not happy about a Nevada school fundraiser in which a game of basketball includes players riding on donkeys.
PETA has issued an "action alert" on its Web site, asking concerned humans to contact Lyon County School District Superintendent Caroline McIntosh and Yerington High School Principal Jerry Ogolin to tell them to cancel the Donkey Basketball fundraiser scheduled for March 1 at the Nevada school.
The Associated Press reports that superintendent McIntosh has no plans to cancel Donkey Basketball, which is described as "a tradition" at Yerington High School, but that she will make an effort to "to ensure [the donkeys] are treated humanely."
Here's a video from YouTube of a donkey basketball event from 2007.
So is this just a bit of harmless fun? Not according to PETA. The group says donkey basketball encourages kids to be cruel, and that the game also is dangerous for the human players. A story on the PETA's Web site says "donkeys who are mistreated or forced into loud, confusing environments can become frightened and may lash out to protect themselves," and that bipedal donkey basketball participants have been injured more than once during these events.
Buckeye Donkey Ball, based in Columbus, Ohio, is one company that offers a number of donkey-related games, including Donkey Basketball, Donkey Baseball and Donkey Racing.
According to a contract posted on its Web site, Buckeye Donkey Ball takes at least half of the profits from the sponsoring school or organization. "After deducting only admission taxes, if any, BUCKEYE will receive 60 percent of all ticket sales or a $1,200.00 minimum payment, whichever is greater. When ticket sales exceed $3,000.00 BUCKEYE will receive 50 percent of all ticket sales," the site states.
This is why PETA says Donkey Basketball also fails as a fundraiser.
As for potential donkey dangers, Buckeye Donkey Ball requires all participants to sign a waiver, which does contain some language about how the donkeys should be treated. For example, "Players MUST NOT pull hair, ears or tails of donkeys or each other. Use caution when catching a donkey and please stay off his rear end at all times." As for the humans, "Please do not push or pull anyone from their donkey."
PETA offers suggestions for fundraisers it feels are less cruel, such as "rubber-duck derby races," which, according to group, raised $133,000 for three Oregon Rotary Clubs.
What do you think? Is donkey basketball cruel? Are there better ways for schools to raise money? Perhaps a Donkey Kong tournament?

They scream aloud for even the most inane things, but seem to be blind to the real issues of this world. I say forget them, and whatever they are crying about today. It will be something new tomorrow anyway. Maybe they will go after some little old lady who pets her cat a little too roughly...

No person or animal was ever injured!! PETA start taking care of the animals that are really being abused, the ones people abandon on the streets or use to fight.

PETA wants you to stop eating your natural diet that includes meat because it's a perceived moral issue and PETA doesn't want you to have pets. Period. The End. They want you to treat animals like they are humans. Eat at the dinner table with silverware and all. I love animals in fact my major has to do with conservation of wildlife. Have you people never heard of polo? It's a sport played on horseback. It has all the same dangers as this would. PETA would crap their pants if they went to the UK. I believe in the end of animal cruelty but using the animal the way it is meant to be used (as in horses you ride, cattle you eat etc) is not cruel in any way. PETA is basically saying you can't let your child eat by themselves because they might stab themselves in their eye with the fork. Donkeys are socialized properly before being used for this kind of sport. They are used to people and they are used to noise. That dramatically cuts down on any risk for these kids. Get over it.

Why can't I have a cow I ride? I'd much rather ride a cow ^_^ (I really wish I was joking there.) But I agree fully as long as the animals are safe, and PETA leaves my natural dietary lifestyle alone...I'm a happy person. I suspect the Lion that eats the Zebra doesn't actually hate the Zebra, or intends cruelty...it's just hungry.

Bonnie said...Yes, this is one of the more stupid things I have ever seen. But why do they have to bring a live animal into a sport? I agree with PETA. It isn't entertainment, it is cruel and is just isn't necessary. Who thought of this 'assinine' game? What do they do when a donkey craps on the court? Hmmmmm . . . this entire scene brings new meaning to the term "ass."

Greg said...Since you know so much while knowing nothing of the game, allow me to educate you a little bit about it. The live animals that are brought in are treated better than many humans. They are well trained and the donkeys are in control. Some of them are trained that when they get a signal to go from the rider, they lay down instead just for one example. It can be very entertaining for the people who take the time to learn a little bit about the game and the reason for it. It is to make the donkeys the stars, not the people. That is why the owners/trainers of the donkeys get the percentage of money raised that they do. They don't just load up a bunch of donkeys from the pasture. That is also why it is not as dangerous as PETA would have you believe. These animals are trained to be performers.
Hopefully this may give some of you a reason to take another look at the game knowing a little bit more about it.

Megan said...There's nothing wrong with Donkey basketball, as some mentioned before, the donkey's are trained and it's very entertaining. We did this in a small town in PA and it's the teachers against the senior class every year. And when the donkey "does its business" whoever was riding the donkey has to clean it up with the shovel on hand.

"PeTA by day, ALF by night" PeTA wants everyone's pet dog to be liberated from it's cruel shackles of slavery to humans. PeTA are liars.

Linnie said...While I don't agree with everything PETA does, they do have a very good rule of thumb - be nice to animals. Riding a donkey on a noisy, hard, basketball court is not being nice - regardless of how well they're trained, fed, or kept off the court. Just because they can't speak up for themselves doesn't mean it's okay to do whatever you want. I hardly think this is enjoyable for them (would you want to be ridden around like this? I'm hoping you answer "no....") -- and using an animal like this to get your jollies really is pretty messed up, anyway. Go have your fun, do what you want to yourselves, but leave the animals out of it.
