New Mexico high school students viewing a videotape about World War I witnessed a bit of pornography instead.

While a substitute was in charge of their class on Feb. 11, the high school students were being shown a history film about the Treaty of Versailles, according to the Las Cruces Sun-News. Before the film started, the newspaper recounts that the students witnessed "two nude women, one of whom was masturbating." The school is in Silver City, about 100 miles northwest of Las Cruces, N.M.

Parents, who learned about the tape from students who were in the class, expressed their views at a school board meeting last week.
Francesca Estevez, a parent, was quoted in the Sun-News as saying, "We love our community. We are very cohesive. What happened last Thursday was not acceptable by community standards. The classroom was subjected to three or four seconds of pornography. The climate in that classroom is forever changed. My concern is that policy was violated. It's very disturbing to think that this material was brought in by a faculty member."

There is a policy in place for a Silver City school's principal and the school superintendent to review any videos above a rating of G. The film about the 1919 treaty, recorded from the History Channel and apparently taped over pornography, had a rating of PG and "apparently had not been previewed by the district," the newspaper reports.

However, when the Consolidated School District Superintendent Dick Pool met with about a dozen parents, he put the tape into a video player and the pornography "did not appear" even after rewinding and trying again, the article continues. Pool took the tape to the classroom where it had been initially played and the pornography appeared and, the newspaper says, "the same video had also been apparently shown at least two other times in the classroom without incident."

Although the classroom's teacher was been put on administrative leave during Pool's investigation, he expressed surprise that the nudity was on the tape and has claimed the tape was borrowed from a friend, the Sun-News writes. While the teacher could face disciplinary actions -- "from no action to a written reprimand to termination" -- Pool declined to tell the Sun-News what action had been taken against the teacher. The New Mexico Public Education Department Ethics Bureau can investigate, possibly bringing more disciplinary actions, the newspaper mentions.

After the investigation, the superintendent and school principal spoke to the class, as well as apologizing to the parents, the newspaper explains.
