Stroller Review: Bugaboo Bee

The Basics: 17 pounds. Good from birth to 37.5 pounds. 20 inches at the widest point when it's unfolded. Collapses to 17 by 35 by 12 inches.
The Lowdown: The Bee is Bugaboo's first attempt at a lightweight, compact stroller. On the surface, the Bee sounds fantastic. It has a quick folding mechanism. Once folded, the Bee is fairly compact and relatively easy to store. The canopy is deep; the rain cover offers complete protection from the elements; and it has more seat position options than previous Bugaboos. The child can face forward or backwards.
Perhaps our biggest issue with the Bee is its narrow seat. At 20" wide, the seat is a squeeze for older children. Plus, the "wings" on the side of the seat, limit a child's peripheral visibility and makes the seat feel uncomfortably closed-in. The Bee is also known for its limited storage and an inability to handle rough terrain.
Another important issue to note is that the Bee was recalled in June 2009 after more than 120 reports of brake failure. The company has remedied the issue by developing a set of brackets that can easily be clicked onto the rear wheels of the Bee to secure the brake function. The brackets are now integrated into the stroller's production process. If you decide to purchase the Bee, it is essential to check that the model you receive has these brackets.
In April 2010, Bugaboo is slated to release an upgraded version of the stroller, the Bugaboo Bee Plus. The Plus will feature a wider frame, with a roomier seat and none of those pesky "wings." Improvements to the wheels, handlebar and braking system are also anticipated. All of this sounds fantastic, but it is rumored that these improvements will bump the cost of the stroller to $649.
You'll Want It If: You're a style-conscious parent and you don't mind trading a bit of functionality for incredible design.
The Bugaboo BEE Complete Stroller is available for $530 at Amazon.

I got it at my baby shower and I've used it maybe 10 times. The price was outrageous for what it is. I'd be happy to pay a lot for a stroller that's worth it. It isn't.

frustrated mother said...Do not buy a Bugaboo Bee! Buy any other Bugaboo product, but not the Bee!
In October of 2007, we pre-ordered the Bugaboo Bee. Our daughter was born in November of 2007. She was not a big baby, in fact, she was on the small side. Immediately, we had problems with the brake, it worked only occasionally. The rain cover ripped within a couple months. Less than six months after our daughter first used the Bee, the frame broke.
For three weeks, we called Bugaboo and were not able to get in touch with anyone. I left messages on any extension I could seeking out help. Finally, we got someone on the phone. We explained our frame broke and the brake didn't work. The service agent was rude, and finally agreed to send us a new frame (it was within warranty), if we emailed them pictures. We did.
A few weeks later, we received a new frame. The brake still didn't work unless I kicked it. Another nine months later, we received a replacement part for the brake (apparently enough people complained about the brake), but it still didn't work until we oiled it up. Two more rain covers later, both ripped, we gave on the rain covers.
Six months ago, the first wheel ripped apart. We bought a new one from BugabooStrollers.com. Two and a half months ago the second wheel ripped. And the frame of the sun canopy snapped, so the shade doesn't go up properly. We ordered another wheel from BugabooStrollers.com. Two months later, it has still not arrived because it's been out of stock. The manager at BugabooStroller.com told me she would send me a used wheel to get by on. That was two weeks ago and it hasn't arrived. We just received a email telling us the new wheel we ordered is still out of stock… indefinitely. So now, we can't use the $500 stroller that never worked well anyway.
If you MUST buy Bugaboo, at least don't buy the Bee.

We really loved our red Bugaboo Bee at first.
BUT recently the brakes failed, the stroller went off a small step, tipped, and caused a head laceration right in the middle of our daughter's forehead that required a trip to the ER and stitches. while the injury could certainly have been a lot worse, we were lucky it was not. After visiting the Bugaboo website to contact them, we discovered there is a recall on this stroller. we were never informed. While the website says there is a part to "fix" the brake, we have not seen it. In fact, our REPEATED emails and calls to the company have gotten no response.
I have lost all faith in this stroller and the company.
I can not recommend this stroller.
