A principal in Baltimore who recruited Filipino teachers to buy and sell thousands of dollars of Mary Kay cosmetics is keeping her job, The Baltimore Sun reports.
"A very thorough investigation was undertaken, which resulted in an appropriate response by the administration," says Baltimore school board President Neil E. Duke, adding that he would not comment on what that response was because it is a personnel issue.
Janice Williams, the principal of Institute of Business and Entrepreneurship and an independent sales director for Mary Kay, went into her teachers' classrooms and asked for their credit cards to purchase cosmetics, according to three of the Filipino teachers, the Sun reports. The teachers did not want the products and they weren't able to resell most of them, but they bought the cosmetics so they would stay on good terms with their boss.
Williams denies allegations that she recruited teachers to sell cosmetics.
Baltimore Teachers Union President Marietta English -- who complained to the administration when she found out about the incident -- says she was told Williams would be investigated, but she would remain in her job, the Sun reports. English says she believes some principals are taking advantage of international teachers, such as giving Filipino teachers additional responsibilities that they should be paid for under the union contract but aren't.
Documents show Williams was the subject of an internal investigation last year, but it is unclear what, if any, action was taken against her.
"Shame on the principal,"says City Councilwoman Mary Pat Clarke. "Reimburse those teachers and make sure that this cannot happen again in that or any other school."
