Mom's Fight to Hang Her Laundry Outside Gets Dirty

Patty Pozeynot of Skippack Township, Pa., was fined $100 by her Hunter Ridge neighborhood association for hanging her laundry to dry on her back porch clothesline.
"I wanna hang out my laundry because I think it's better for our environment, it's the green thing to do," Pozeynot tells NBC Philadelphia.
The development banned residents from hanging clothes a year after she moved in. She has to get more than half of her 55 neighbors to sign a petition to allow her to legally hang her clothes. Pozeynot so far has gotten only 19 of the 38 signatures needed, but another neighbor has gotten enough and hangs clothes out to dry, NBC Philadelphia reports.
Some residents don't want to see the anti-clothesline rule changed.
"You change one rule, what's going to be next," says resident Karen Kelly. "I think if everybody did it, I don't think it would look appealing."

David Bocc said...NO NO NO....she signed a legal document stating that she would obey the rules of the neighborhood...and one rule was not to hang clothes outside. If she doesn't like to obey rules that she agreed to...she can move and good riddance.

Tab Lloyd said...The HOA changed the laundry rules AFTER she signed the document. Anyway, these stuffed shirts always allow for their changes to take precedent over previous laws (and apparently common sense.)

micky eggs said...what the hell is wrong about hanging your clothes outside? when i was a younger man i remember how nice the sheets and pillows smelt on a crisp spring or fall day in the bronx. i can almost smell it now as i write this. forget about this being green and saving the planet. the planet will keep rotating around the sun long after you and i are fertilizing the good earth. in the winter is was good to try to get frozen pants off the leg hangers or whatever they're calledand putting them in the boiler room or on a radiater. ah such memories the past holds.so all you people in your Mcdonald mansions, put your energy into something else. hang your clothes outside, build a fire in the yard, put a couple of potatoes in the ashes put a hot dog on a branch and enjoy life. don't for=get the marshmellows

Wendy said...HOA's have rules and you know that when you live in a place like that. My son lived in one in Hawaii and the association even determined the color of everyone's curtains. They want the neighborhood to preserve a certain look and I guess in her neighborhood they found clothes lines unsightly which they are.

Denise L Lear said...omg I did not read all the comments, but, for Heaven's sake! My Mother always hung out the clothes. Here in FL, years ago, the afternoon showers were just that, really just a mist, but the clothes were ready to iron afterward, and you didn't have to sprinkle them! My daughter wants to hang out the clothes, but can't afford the clothesline. What the heck does that say about today's economy and being green??

In some areas these people can;t really afford to live where they think they really belong so its kind of a --we are frustrated so we make you think we are all that attitude. They promote rules for themselves to feel good like we don't do that here etc. WE lived in sugarland Texas for a while and these broads were all sexually in need indeed.
Move to the country and really live your life!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

wyldsyde53 said...Why is it that people buy homes in an area with a home owners association, and then complain when said entity enforces the rules that the homeowner knows about. Every town has a building department you can go to for filthy yards and things like that so who would want to pay extra anyway to live in a neighborhood where you are told what to do with your home? If you do not like the rules then sell your house and move somewhere else.

LASS said...It's green It's healthy and your clothes smell wonderful! People who find it distasteful to see clothes on a line are just absurd!!! We all wear clothes, whats the difference whether on a line or on your body? Get off your high horse, Each of us pay for our homes, and many a fair chunk of change. You should be allowed to do as you wish, with in reason of course, and i think clothes on a line are within reason! I have a friend who's association says they cant grow tomatos or other types of produce... on their OWN property, it is unsightly. GIVE ME A BREAK!!!

Zizo said...It's amusing to me how American society has absolutely no problem with letting people air their dirty laundry on reality TV and gross talk shows (most people can't seem to get enough of that)but they're deeply offended at the sight of their neighbors clean laundry hanging in the sunshine and fresh air. These are probably the same people who are so concerned about being green as they drive their gas guzzling Hummers to Whole Foods so they can buy organic produce. Geez, why can't people just mind their own business?

Karen said...Whenever you choose to live in a community where others dictate the rules by which you have to live by....understand those who want to be in charge generally like to control things...
Advice: do not live in neighborhoods where others choose how you live. Think before purchasing the house you live in.

Susie said...First, thank you to Denise for that wonderful poem. Second, when I was a child, no one had clothes dryers. Clothes were hung out even in the dead of winter and they would freeze. As a child, I found it hysterical that the clothes were frozen stiff and wouldn't bend. Summer or winter, the clothes always smelled SO good. I think these homeowner associations are run by people with too much time on their hands and control issues. We have so much more to worry about than a clothesline. And just for the record, I love the sight of a full clothesline and the sound of clothes flapping in the wind. It's also a very relaxing activity and a great way to get your Vitamin D!!

JEB said...I just wish all you "people" who like making the rules for everyone elses property could all find one freakin place to live in. Quit imposing your rules on everyone else and go rule yourselves into oblibion.
The fact that she thinks this is the "Green" thing to do is just as obnoxious. It shouldn't matter. If I wanted to cut my yard in a circle, one of these people would find a way to stop me. GOOOH OBOMA.
