A nice Emily or Sarah or Melissa? Soo not Hollywood. Names like Brian, William or Ken? Yeah, right. Because, apparently, when you're a big-time star -- be it actor, musician, model or athlete -- it seems there is a weird-quotient that must be factored in when it comes to your child's name. Whether you borrow from the supermarket (Apple, Sage, Thyme), an atlas (Bronx, Brooklyn, Memphis) or superhero-sound-alikes (Kal-el, Moxie CrimeFighter, Pilot Inspektor), stars are guaranteeing their offspring will stand out in one way or another.
Here's a list of ParentDish's 100 weirdest baby names, in alphabetical order. Hey, the richer the parents are, the less likely you are to be teased. Just ask Tallulah, Rumer and Scout.

brenna said...i have a somewhat unusual name that i am constantly having to repeat and explain and i love it. it's not something people hear everyday so it stands out and is not boring like brittany or meghan. i was never made fun of for my name because little kids didnt associate my name with anything but me. they're kids! the only thing they know is what's around them so they can't get too creative anyway. if they're going to make fun of you it's because you're weird and kids with names like jeremy are much easier targets than brooklyn or poet. i think it's great that these people express themselves this way. it's obviously creative and it's something that the parents love... the children will feel that. their parents think they're special enough to have a unique name and that always feels better than being just another jim or john

dnd said...My brother says his grandson has a "kick my butt and take my lunch name" Dorian. Poor kids! The other kids will tease them horribly. As a retired teacher, I had to protect some kids with weird names from being verbally abused. At least when thye are grown the kids can become John, Bill, etc by going to court.

Karla DeVito said...Ok -- we are number 57 on this list. Our kids Lyric and Zephyr have always loved their names. No therapy involved! I grew up in the midwest and there were actually 4 girls named Susan in my class -- confusing and no fun for them. Robby and I waited to see our newborns to decide what to name them. He's also a writer and had a wonderful old family dictionary and the definition for Lyric was "exuberant and rhapsodic" and absolutely perfect for her! Zephyr meant not only the west wind, but also "gentle peacemaker" and "messenger of spring."
Baby naming is a very personal thing -- in the end it's no ones business but the parents (this means you, opinionated relatives everywhere out there -- let the father and mother decide)!! When the day comes, whatever our kids decide to name their children, we will never complain.

Linda said...I love the name Lyric, it is lovely. There were FOUR Linda's in my class in first grade, so I was Little Linda, UNFORTUNATELY there was a Big Linda! So, I love unusual names. Many, like Phineas are old names and were very common in the 1800's. Also many names like Harper and Palmer and Rivers are family surnames.

Ashley said...I like Lyric and I don't think it is very different at all. My daughter is Kaia (which no one pronounces right and it isn't even that different) and a girl I went to high school with ended up naming her daughter Chevelle.

MerryEllen said...Karla, I'm so glad you posted on here. When I read your children's names, I was surprised they were included in this name smack-down. I think they are lovely names and unusual without being weird.
(Our last name is Lee, and, knowing my children would have a harder time with such a common last name, we chose slightly unusual names ourselves. We have three daughters named Bethany {32 years ago, Bethany was a rarely heard name}, Breonny (Bree-AWE-knee), and Brier. {We didn't intend to go for all B names, but had to go for the third once we had two...} And Breonny's daughter is named Rixie, after my great-grandmother, Ellen Rixie. All of them love their names and we have heard nothing but positive comments about them.)
Thank you again for posting and addressing the reasoning behind the unique names of your children.

Teresa said...My husband wanted different names for our kids. My son, Holt, has been called Hope, Hoyt, and Colt. My daughter, Chesley (sounds like Wesley) has been called Chelsea a million times. I wish I had a nickel for everytime. I'd be very rich. Most people like her name once that know how to pronounce it. And the airline pilot hero had the same name too.
