Trend Report: The Hottest Baby Names of 2010
Filed under: Baby Names
Baby name trends change faster today than ever before. Just a few years ago, a name like Ava was a refreshing surprise. Now it's a top five hit. What's up next? To find out, I've asked my friends at BabyNameWizard.com for an exclusive peek into the hottest names from the site's "Namipedia."
Every day, thousands of name-hunting parents turn to Namipedia to learn about -- and comment on -- their favorite names. The searches make the most popular names a snapshot of what name-conscious parents will be naming their babies, just a couple of trimesters down the line.
Many of the names reflect the current top 10. Others, though, read like a glimpse into the future. The baby name style forecast: a shower of Charlottes and Olivers. Those are 2010's most-researched names for boys and girls to date.
Charlotte was quietly timeless until the late 1990s, when it was featured on the TV series "Sex and the City." The show has been off the air for years now, but the name seed was planted. Charlotte has continued to climb the popularity charts, and the Namipedia rankings point to even greater popularity ahead.
The boy's name Oliver has lagged behind sister Olivia in popularity ... in the United States, at least. In England and Australia, it's a top-10 hit. As the most-searched boy's name of 2010, it should continue its rise here, too.
At the cutting edge of style, BabyNameWizard.com also has tabulated the hot new names that have risen the fastest from a year ago. Not surprisingly, some come straight from Hollywood. But the biggest name boost doesn't necessarily go to the celebrity in the brightest spotlight. Take Sookie, an old-fashioned nickname for Susan that appears in the TV series "True Blood," and Castiel, the name of an angel on the series "Supernatural." They've intrigued enough parents to become the hottest rising names of 2010.

Amy said...I'm black and I can't stand those stupid names black people give their kids. Can't really say for sure if those La, Lo, L' (or the like) names come from Africa but what I can say for sure is, none of these people who are so freakin proud of Africa and that name their kids these ridiculous names have EVER been to Africa or will ever go to Africa. And what's more black people...you have been over 400 years removed from Africa. GET OVER IT!! YOU ARE AMERICAN. YOU ARE BLACK AMERICAN!!! Go to Africa, any one of those countries and watch how you're stared at and how Africans hate it when black Americans think they are African. Also, when you are going for your American job, don't sit and wonder why you didn't get it. If I'm looking at your resume and I can't pronounce your name, NEXT! If and only if, you are from another country (it could be as far as 3 generations removed) and that is your culture then by all means, have that name that means something...but don't have an identity crisis and put some name on your kid that will define him/her for the rest of their life! My name is Amy Elizabeth and I am a black woman and my name means 'beloved'. There's strength for you. My mother didn't feel the need to name me Shaquisha, just because of the color of my skin.

Alina said...First off Amy, I agree with what you are saying, but most of those so called "black names" are actually middle eastern, southeast Asian and Arabic, look them up (so technically they are not black, they are asian Names since the middle eats and obviously southeast Asia are in Asia)! And well, not only black or "Asian" people have hem, I have met several white girls with the name Shaniqua, Laytoya, Quandra, blah blah blah... And to not higher someone for their name could fall down as being discriminative and you could possible get into trouble, so yeah.. good luck with that!

There are plenty of African-Americans who do live here but the majority who insist they are African Americans, as you say, have never been to Africa. I am white so what should I be called? I suppose my ancestors came from somewhere else and probably about the same time that your ancestors came here. My ancestors also might have been slaves or criminals or just thrown out of their birth countries for some other reason. I still say if you are not proud to just be an American, NO MATTER WHAT YOUR COLOR, then leave the country. And Alena - the word is spelled hire - not higher.

Oh yeah and it is a call center where they give their name & try to sell on the phone. Very hard when the client is trying to figure out what the heck the persons name is.

MELBA ANN WILLIAMS said...I love these names--4 of the top 10 are my grandaughter's names--and 3 of the grandsons. I do think Olivia is rising as she is the Mom of the beloved Manning brothers sports stars. My grandson is already saying if he has a girl--her name will be Olivia. The Elizabeth's, Claire's, Emily's, Emma's will always be on top. In fact we have 2 Elizabeth's. Emma can be connnected to Julia Robert's niece..

Diana said...I have to agree with Amy, and Phillip and most of the others above, but in truth, my daughter has a faily unusual name, although a beautiful one. Her name is Teagan. I thought that I had personally thought this name up almost 30 years ago, but as it turns out, it's an Irish name meaning "beautiful one". Very appropriate for her, however, when my child was born, my "Teagan" turned out to be my "Jason"....(#1 boy's name of 1980 btw), and then my Teagan came along 11 years later. I believe in giving a child a name of strength and originality, but only to a degree. When it becomes a source of a problem, or finger pointing, or you can't pronounce it...well then mom's...you need to RETHINK what you are doing to your children...not to mention their future employers.

jjmdbsfla said...Parents (especially mothers) apparently think it is cute to give children some of these trendy names. The sad reality is the child is saddled with an asinine name that he or she with have to correct spelling and pronunciation for the rest of his or her life. Trailer park mentality is spreading across our nation!
