Jillian Michaels: Parents, Don't Be Like Me With Your Kids

As a brutally-tough trainer on NBC's The Biggest Loser, Jillian Michaels screams, bellows and generally terrifies fitness-challenged contestants. Harsh? Maybe. Effective? Definitely. So ParentDish asked the health-and-fitness guru how to shape up our families and overhaul our snack drawers.
It's time for some tough love.
ParentDish: What were you like as a little kid? We read that you were 175 lbs. at 5 feet tall. What were your eating/exercise habits like back then?
Jillian Michaels: I was a very sensitive kid. The class loser all through junior high. The chubby ugly duckling that ate lunch alone every day. I ate all processed crap and used food for comfort. Microwave pancakes and sausage for breakfast. Pizza, Coke, potato boat for my school lunch. Then after school, I would eat an entire bag of Cheetos. For dinner I would eat Taco Bell and lots of it with ice cream for dessert. As for fitness ... I played a bit of soccer when I was very young and I skate boarded but not enough to offset my eating habits.
PD: What gave you the impetus to change?
JM: By the age of 14 I got into martial arts an it turned my life around. The strength I developed physically transcended into every facet of my life.
PD: Should a parent be as tough on their kids as you are with The Biggest Loser contestants?
JM: NO!!! The Biggest Loser is about life-or-death confrontations. Last ditch attempts to get people back on track. Kids need positive reinforcement only.
PD: What were your parents like? Did they teach you healthy lifestyle habits?
JM: My father was heavy and had an addictive personality, especially with food. Food became the way my father and I bonded. As for my mother, she was always thin and didn't know the first thing about nutrition. She thought she was doing the right thing by giving me juice boxes instead of sodas or Wheat Thins instead of potato chips. She has no idea those products were as bad, if not worse. By the time I was 14, she knew she needed to get proactive about my health an that's when she got me into martial arts.
PD: We need your advice to parents. This issue comes up a lot: A mom notices her 10-year-old child gaining weight, becoming overweight. How does the mom help her child without creating an eating disorder? In other words, how do you tell your kid, 'You're fat and you need to do something about it?' How do you start the conversation and keep it going without giving your kid body image issues?
JM: The most important thing a parent can do is to NOT make an issue of their child's weight. Kids interpret this as a form of criticism and often rebel by eating even more. The best thing to do is lead by example by keeping yourself fit and healthy. Make efforts to get the whole family healthy so it's not about singling your chubby little one out. Find fun social activities your child can do that will keep them active like soccer, cheerleading etc. Teach them about healthy goods to help them become a healthy grownup. Don't make it about pounds or calorie counting. Involve them in the food. Let them start a little vegetable garden so they are invested. Challenge them to find fruits and veggies in their favorite colors and so on. This helps to keep health fun and make them feel in control of their choices.
PD: Working parents of young kids are the busiest people on the planet. How can they prioritize fitness?
JM: They have to schedule it in. Arrange a carpool and buy yourself some time. Exercise on your lunch hour. Fit it in with your kids on the weekends by doing fun family activities like hiking, biking, kyaking etc.
PD: Should parents lie to their kids about their own eating habits? For example, yesterday I bought Ring Dings and ate them before I got home so my daughter wouldn't see. Good idea?
JM: It's never a good idea to lie. I wouldn't lie. Explain to your kids that there is room for higher calorie foods in a healthy diet. The key is moderation. I would however urge you to make sure the treat foods they eat are not laden with chemicals and poisons. For example, let your kids have Pop Chips instead of potato chips fried in hydrogenated trans fats. Give them dark chocolate instead of the candy bar crap made with high fructose corn syrup. Get the idea?

Lisa said...The biggest loser is a success becuase she was not just all talk. She's been there and knew that it was going to take some tough pushing to get people that needed to lose more than just 10 pounds to loose the weight. When you are just 10 pounds from your goal it is a cinch to loose the extra 10; but when you have carried 50+ pounds for years your body does not want to let it go. Many trainers will criticize these people and say they are lazy not realizing that it is going to take these people a lot more than a person that only needs to lose 10-20 pounds....A degree isn't always the answer sometimes experience in combination of carries more weight..no pun intended,. ;]

The Biggest Loser is a SHOW. IT IS NOT NORMAL TO LOSE 60-100 POUNDS IN 3 MONMTHS, NOR IS IT PRACTICAL OR SAFE. 2-3 LBS A MONTH IS OPTIMAL, AND 1 POUND A WEEK WOULD BE SUCCESS. Email me and i will get you going! lordsfitness@aol.com

Andromeda said...Someone asked: "Why do so many people dislike her? Can anyone honestly answer this? Is it really Jillian you're upset with?"
I first saw her peddling her weight loss products, and took an instant dislike to her. In her commercials she came off as condescending, arrogant, and pushy. I noticed later commercials were toned down quite a bit since those first ones, but from what I've read about the way she acts on the show, I'd say first impressions are probably spot on.
So she used to have a weight problem. Is that supposed to make it ok for her to look down on other people that do?
Being able to lose weight is not about having some Biotch yell and scream to motivate you and get you to take her miracle diet aid. It's learning the proper amount of food to eat, cut out refined sugar, eat less salt, and eat more fresh fruits and veggies. Once you know that, all it takes is will power to turn down the burgers, fries, and sweets. The best exercise is walking. Walk a quarter mile if that's all you can do. Listen to some music on the way. No expensive equipment needed. No dangerous diet pills. And best of all, no know-it-all guru pushing you beyond your limit making you feel bad about yourself...after all, it's not her knees that will be damaged, and not her heart that will be stressed. She doesn't care about those people, she's in it for the money. Say what you will about Richard Simmons, but at least he cares about the people he tries to help, emotionally and physically, and helped me stay fit all through high school.

Susan Cole said...The interviewer uses the word impetus correctly but then writes "desert" instead of "dessert." And, in Jillian's responses, it's always "an" instead of "and." Doesn't AOL have editors to proofread these articles? Anyway, the advice Jillian Michaels gives is excellent. Parents of young children are lucky to have her. I just hope they pay attention.

LoLo said...I would have a little more respect for her if she didn't put her name on those pills. She preaches on the Biggest Loser the importance of diet and exercise naturally, and then endorses a product that isn't legit. The bottom line is that you have to take in less calories than you burn. Cut out the sugar and carbs, and exercise. I know people struggle with their weight, but it's simple as diet and exercise. Why do we need people like Dr. Phil and Oprah, and Jillian to tell us common sense things we already know? Get up, clear ALL of the junk food out of your house...get out and start walking. Just start moving, and KEEP IT GOING! Peace out

Catherine said...I am 5 ft, 3in. Ten years ago, I weighed 269 pounds. I had the oldest form of a Gastroplasty done. ( The kind now that doctor's say is the very worst kind, because to undo it, you risk massive hemmorage and death.) My surgeon at the time, told me my stomach was the size of a small walnut, he said I would have some vomiting, until my stomach adjusted. My surgeon is long since deceased. I continued to have a problem with vomiting, not self induced, but severe stomach pain after eating small amts. of food. My mouth would start to water, to the point if I did not make it to the bathroom, I would have thrown up, where ever, even if it were on the front pew of church. This has never gone away. It is somewhat better, but the severe stomach pain after trying to eat is horrible. I now weigh between 100-105 pounds. My question is this, how do I lose the extra skin? I need to do strengthing and toning exercises, but don't really know how to begin. I also have an appt. with a GI doctor for an EGD. to find what is wrong with me, and hope it is not anything serious. Since my mother died at 48, which I will be this May. She had no symptoms but a severe lower back ache. They did exploratory surgery, she was eaten up with cancer, stomach, liver, everywhere. All the surgeon could do, was close mom up, she ended up with a colostomy and six months or left to live, she lived for 3 months. I know I should have had the tests done a very long time ago. I cannot digest any meat, very little veggies. I live basically on mashed potatoes, nutrional supplements, water and some veggie casseroles. I am getting my health checked out. But I still would like any advice in toning and strengthing exercises. Jullian is great, she would be a great person to motivate me. Her method of "getting in your face" would make me very angry, but I would only push myself harder, because what else can you do? Quit? Or use that anger in a positive manner. I think she is a great individual, and to know she was once a fat kid too, as I always was. And to see her now, I know there is a way, other than plastic surgery, to tone and strength your body and be in the best physical health possible. Thanks for listening, and any input I would greatly appreciate. God bless.

JPDotoli said...First off, I dont think Jillian is a lesbian. I believe she is married. Second, I have followed some of her work off of the BL show and she really is an amazing trainer. Although her weight loss and supplement products arent the best on the market and kind of overpriced, its the name that drives the cost up. I like the fact that she is not a fake. She truly is someone to look up to. She is my motivation for my own weight loss. :)

Carolyn said...Jillian is a very good trainer. She is hard as nails though and I'm not sure that I would want to have her train me. That is only because I'm a little lazy and I know that she would push me hard. I had a personal trainer once that pushed me hard and I learned to fake being worked too hard. I think that some of the people on the show try the same thing and she has to push them. You have to push hard sometimes to get to the next fitness level and I believe that's what she does and why she is good. I think she has the ability to know when people need pushing and when they don't. I say I wouldn't want her to train me but it would be the best thing for me if she did. She's really tough.

Katie said...Jillian is a tough trainer with a mouth like a sailor! My roommate was watching The Biggest Loser several weeks ago as I was doing homework. There was so much bleeping out words I thought he was watching a porno and didn't ask me to join him!! Then I found out it was The Biggest Loser and Jillian was yelling at a contestant.
Yes, there are so many of us that are overweight (yes, I'm one). And some of us don't help ourselves either. BUT, there are medical and physilogical reason people aren't a size 2! I have been hospitalized 6 times with malnutrition! But I'm overweight! I eat the right foods and not much of them either, however my body has an absorbtion anomoly. So, no matter what I eat, the nutrients are not absorbed correctly (hence the malnutrition) however any fat or sugar is absorbed and automatically deposited as fat in my tissues! The doctors have been working with me for 5+ years trying to figure out how to either turn my metabolism up and supplement me, or how to boost my absorbtion rate.
The one other thing that I want to say is how come people have accepted the fact that we were created in different colors and genders, different hair, different eyes, etc BUT cannot accept that we were also created in different sizes!!!
