Spanking Makes Children More Aggressive, Study Shows

If you think spanking a child makes him more belligerent, while your spouse believes it teaches discipline, you may just have the upper hand in the debate. A new study shows the link between corporal punishment and aggression is even stronger than previously thought, and the more you spank, the worse your child gets.
Researchers surveyed nearly 2,500 children in 20 large U.S. cities, and found those who were regularly spanked at age 3 were more likely to be aggressive 5-year-olds, according to an article in the May issue of Pediatrics. The researchers relied on mothers to report both their own spanking patterns and their children's behavior.
What makes this study different from the dozens of earlier reports showing a similar link is that the researchers accounted for other factors that could make a child more aggressive, such as physical and psychological abuse between parents and toward children, neglect, stress, substance abuse, depression and the consideration of abortion, lead author Catherine Taylor, assistant professor at Tulane's School of Public Health and Tropical Medicine, tells ParentDish.
Even accounting for those factors, the researchers found children who were subjected to even minor forms of corporal punishment -- specifically, those who were spanked three times or more in the month prior to the survey at age 3 -- were 50 percent more likely to be bullies, get into fights, be destructive or disobedient, attack people or scream a lot at age 5, Taylor says.
Despite studies showing that spanking is counterproductive and the American Academy of Pediatrics' recommendation against corporal punishment, most parents in the United States have used corporal punishment as a form of discipline. A 2005 poll showed 72 percent of adults thought it was OK to spank a child.
Taylor recommends that parents who want to find alternative ways of disciplining their children speak to their pediatrician or visit HealthyChildren.org and search "discipline" or "spanking."

Ryo said...This can't be serious. Spanking causing aggression? Really? Whatever! My parents used to spank me (with a belt even!) growing up and I didn't turn out aggressive.
If a child is misbehaving and acting up, then spank their butt! We need to stop living in a world where people think discipline and spanking is abuse. There's a BIG difference between beating a child and popping them on their butt for acting the fool.

Amanda said...I was spanked as a child, but it was never out of anger and it was never undeserved. As a young adult getting ready to graduate from college, I can't even begin to tell you how thankful I am for the discipline my parents gave me. When I look around at the rest of my generation and those behind me, I know exactly which children were "spared the rod" and which children were not.
There's a difference between spanking and abuse and this study didn't exactly clarify that. I've noticed that more aggressive children tend to be those who are punished unnecessarily to the point where they are almost numb to the spanking. It becomes just another part of life. BUT, when a child is spanked sparingly by a cool-headed mature parent are they more aggressive then?

I have seen kids in the plubic scream and holler at their parents and at other people. I f one of the children would ever talk. scream or holler at me like that seen they would get spank right there and then. Like i tell all my kids they are never to old to get spank.

Dee Dee Driscoll said...I do not there is anything wrong with spanking or course you should not abuse your child. Children need to be held accountable for there actions. I have to say my friends that did not get spanking seem to be less diciplined and almost spolied. Yes you should try other methods before you spank and make it a last resort. Well 1st I sit down with my child and explain to then what they did wrong. 2nd write a scripture out of the bible. If the behavior continue to gets worse then it is time for a spanking. If you do not discipline your kids now then the juvenile detention center will or the jail.

Pam said...I have 2 daughters ages 11 and 14 and they were both spanked when they did something to deserve it.When they were babies and started standing while holding onto things, they would reach out and try to grab things they were'nt supposed to have so I asked their doctor how to stop that without having to put everything on a high shelf. She told me to take my first two fingers and lightly tap their hand and say "No." Now am I a bad parent because I started "spanking" at such a young age? The light tapping never hurt them but they did learn to not touch certain things. As they got older I started the real spanking and for the most part they didn't walk away crying or screaming but they understood that what they did was wrong. I did use more time outs as they got older but they were spanked up until age 9 and both of them turned out pretty good. I think it depends on the relationship the parent has with the child and how often the child is spanked. My neighbor does not believe in spanking and her three kids ae out of control. She thinks that time outs and taking things away are better forms of punishment. They run wild when she takes them out and they don't listen to her at all. Her oldest told my 11 year old that spanking is abuse and that she should call the police on me. When my daughter told me that, I laughed and asked her if she thought it as abuse and she simply said, "No."

Itoshii said...Seriously? I was spanked when I was young, and my boyfriend comes from a background where he was beat, and neither of us have ever had a tendency to bully or otherwise abuse our peers, or anyone else.
You know why children are more agressive now when they're spanked? Because they hear about other kids who call it child abuse and then get whatever they want!
Do a study on agressiveness in children in comparison to how much expensive crap their parents buy them. My brothers are beautifully behaved pre-teens and guess what they do? They go play in the mud and go fishing and play tag with the neighborhood kids! They hardly ever play with computers or gaming systems.

I use a wooden spoon for spanking ON THE REAR WITH PANTS ON. When people visit with my kids or we are in public, MY children are the sweetest, sharing, courteous, and loving-- EVEN understanding.
I spank my kids, like my parents did me, and there parents did them. Forget the LEFT WING NUT JOBS and keep some order in this country.

Grimmy said...Did the study account for the fact that the children being spanked more might be more aggressive to start with? In my household, spanking was only used for willful, knowing disobedience, and most of my friends and family used it the same way, as a last resort. Perhaps these children were more willful right from the get-go. It would also be interesting to follow them into the future and see if they remain more aggressive, outgoing, extroverted types.

You guys are a bunch of idiots to believe this shit, even animal offspring are disciplined physically. I was spanked plenty of times throughout my first 18 years and I know I deserved it, and I was not an aggressive child going around bullying others and shit. These people are idiots, think about it, over the past couple of decades people have been complaining more and more about discipline and b*tching about a child getting spanked, and criminal activity has increased along with it. A child that knows their parent is going to back up what they say and discipline them and keep their asses in line, that child is going to grow up obeying the law and people around them. Kids that grow up getting away with everything, and their parents trying to talk to them calmly and quietly are going to do whatever they want and treating everyone like shit. I don't mean people should beat on their kids, BUT HEY! What the hell happens when you touch a burning stove??????????? You get burnt, what happens when you mess with a cactus......you'll never want to do that again. What happens when you mess with a skunk.......or aggravate a dog or cat???? You're going to learn the hard way, they're not going to speak quietly and tell you "shhh...don't do that", you're going to feel pain. Get over yourselves people, pain is a part of life.

Teens killing innocent ADULTS just for kicks. Teens killing their parents. Just watch the news and see the results of your flawed research. I was brought up with spanking, and I did some college, did over 20 years in the armed forces, own my own house, and two cars. Married with my own children. Have two teen aged daughters, one just got into college the other about to finish high school and none of them got pregnant. I also have two teen boys that hasn't been involved with the law. That's pretty damn good for living in Philadelphia. They have and do get the discipline when needed. My 9 year old reads on a 12th grade level, and all this was done with discipline and not abuse.

Are they inner city vs subruban, who their parents are, how do they fit in their day cares, what are their parents occupation, what are their parents relationships amongst each other? These are just sveral things that will also influence the childs behavior. I mean if a father is abusive towards mother , well what do you expect the child to be , extremely passive and peaceful? What i am trying to say is these websites just get random b.s from some godforsaken sources, which conduct research on such topics as this in a very crude, unscientific manner.

Caitlin said...Alright, i'm a firm believer of spanking, i think that when a child acts out, and a simple warning does not work, take them into a different room and bust their butts, i'm not a beleiver on spanking a child in front of others, it seems more degrading, and to those whose going to say spanking is degrading then either they have no children, or they are really bad at living in reality, i was spanked when i was a child, and i understood why, my eldest sisters were not, and one of them ended up ruining a family because the discipline came to late, my son acts like a jerk sometimes, a simple look to him, shows him what kind of act he's pulling, and when that look becomes useless, he gets one warning threat, when that doesn't work, we walk to a bathroom, i don't see a point in putting them in time out, because you can only keep them in their mere minutes of age,( if they are 3) only three minutes, and by a minute and a half they've already forgot why they are there, the simple spanking reminds them then and their,

Paula said...There is nothing wrong with spanking a child when they are being downright defiant and used only as a last resort. When is the last time anyone was able to reason with a 3 old? Oh wait, it's better to discipline by messing with a kids head right? I would rather get a spanking and get it over with, believe me the spankings I got when I was kid made me "think" (there's the psychology) twice before I misbehaved again. How much money was spent on this study? Granted, there is a line between spanking and abuse, so a good swat on the backside is not abuse, anything more is abuse. I have raised two beautiful and well behaved children that are not even the least bit belligerant or aggressive, they are confident in themselves and do not let people misuse or manipulate them.

Laughing Lady said...Parents who spank small children are the same ones who crank up the violence as the child grows. What they forget is that one day junior will be as big as his parent. And he'll be younger, spry, muscular, and madder than hell. So if you think it's good to knock your kids around, remember: they're plotting their revenge.
