Are girls and boys inherently biased towards gender-specific toys? Credit: Getty Images

Boys seem to favor cars from an early age, suggesting there is an "intrinsic bias" towards gender-specific toys, according to a new study.

Researchers at City University in the United Kingdom put a range of toys in front of 90 children ranging in age from 9 to 36 months and recorded who played with what and for how long, BBC News reports. The boys spent more time playing with cars and balls and the girls spent more time playing with the dolls.

"We were surprised to find the differences so early," says researcher Dr. Brenda Todd. She adds, "Children of this age are already subject to a great deal of socialization, but these findings are consistent with the idea of an intrinsic bias in children to show interest in particular kinds of toys."
