Most Popular Baby Names of 2009: Jacob & Isabella
Filed under: Baby Names
The U.S. government has announced the nation's most popular baby names. America, here's your Top 10:
Boys:
1. Jacob
2. Ethan
3. Michael
4. Alexander
5. William
6. Joshua
7. Daniel
8. Jayden
9. Noah
10 Anthony
Girls:
1. Isabella
2. Emma
3. Olivia
4. Sophia
5. Ava
6. Emily
7. Madison
8. Abigail
9. Chloe
10. Mia
The big news is Isabella, ending a 13-year run of Em- names -- Emily and Emma -- at the top of the girls' charts. It's not a surprising development. Isabella has ranked in the top 10 since 2004, with countless other -bella names trailing in its wake. The Twilight phenomenon can't hurt, either. (Team Edward can't be pleased seeing Jacob and Isabella as king and queen of the baby name prom.) And Isabella has been one of the hottest names for Hollywood babies, too.
So the name itself isn't a surprise. The amazing part is the way it took the crown: with a huge surge up to 22,000 babies born, thousands more than the year before. As a rule, mega-hit names just don't do that. For decades, the popularity of the top names has been dropping, as modern parents try to make their kids' names stand out. Even more amazing, Isabella beat out Jacob to become America's true #1 name. That makes it the first female champion since Linda edged James all the way back in 1940. You go, girl.
My colleagues at BabyNameWizard.com and NameCandy.com will be crunching through the full name rankings, and reporting more on hot risers and fallers and celebrity name impact. In the meantime, what do you think of America's favorite names?

Angela said...I am in my 30's and named our baby Isabella... Before I read or even heard about the books but, unfortunately after the books had already come out. Kind of embarrassing, but we love our Bella/Izzy/Bella Bell none the less! It is a beautiful name!

Your probably 60 sum to 70 yrs. old and most likely born in late spring and your mom couldn't come up with something more original; except looking out the hospital window & seeing a bunch of flowers down below and BAMMM! The lillies she saw gave her a way out for your name. Original... NOT!
Can you pronounce this Lily?
Airicka or Airicah ORIGINAL?!?!? HELL YEAH!!!

A few years ago she had problems and they thought she probably would not be able to carry a child, so we were actually happy for her. She is living with us, I did not want her to go through her pregnancy without her b/f so we invited him to move in with us. We really like her b/f. He's a good hard working man. He treats her really well, and I look at him as my son.
Now hear is what is bothering me. My husband and I have supported my daughter and her b/f. We wanted them to pay off their debts and start saving money. We bought all the baby stuff that they would need. We have always been their for them. Never over bearing just here when they needed advice and asked us. We even loaned him money to get caught up with his truck payment. He never asked us we offered.
They have picked out a name for the baby and they have used his mothers name in the baby's name. I have to say that it did hurt my feeling. After all we have done everything for him and her. My health is bad and my feelings are hurt.
I met his mother and she is one of those people that everything has to be "HER" way totally different than me. I'm a live and let live sort of person. But I can't get over my feelings being hurt. I feel like a stake has been put through my heart.
