Is This 'Single Ladies' Video Too Hot for Tots?
Filed under: Funny Stuff, Music, Tween Culture
Help us settle a debate at ParentDish: While we all agree the young girls in the video are fierce and fantastic dancers, we're torn when it comes to their costumes. Are their ensembles too sexy for their age or completely appropriate?
The pint-size dancers performed the routine at Wold of Dance Pomona 2010 in Pomona, Calif., on April 10. Unconfirmed reports state that the girls are 7 years old, and World of Dance organizers did not return ParentDish's calls.
If you have a child enrolled in dance classes or if you've been to a kids' dance recital or competition recently, you might find the costumes de rigueur -- not shocking or provocative. Of course, costumes are part of a dancer's artistic expression, adding drama to the performance while allowing them to move. But do prepubescent girls need to express themselves in bra tops, booty shorts and fishnet sleeves?

simaatsea said...Why are we talking about the costumes? They're perfectly appropriate for the lyrics and movements of the dance. Perhaps those are the inappropriate elements in this presentation. But it would be hard to convince the dancers of that given the raucous shouts and applause their performance generated.

Kelly said...Are you kidding? Since when is it OK for anyone other than strippers to dance or dress like that? Let alone 7 year olds. I guess sex sells even if they are 7, and we wonder why there is so much teen age pregnancy and child molestation and sexual violence to women. But to be honest it has become so mainstream I am more suprised, although pleasantly, that it was even made a topic of discusion. I guess some of us do still have morals and although not prudes know when sex is and isn't appropriate:)

Ave2010 said...I totally agree I am 19 years old and don't have any kids and I know that is just wrong! I'd flip out if my God daughter even knew how to dance like that!! Sure it is different in high-school but these are young girls. It sicknes me to think if a child molester saw this, that's your little girl that he/she is 'getting off' to! They are incredible dancers, take it from someone who's danced for 13 years, but if girl my age wore outfits like that, which we do sometimes, it looks like a strip tease. Just imagine all the Daddy's looking at their little baby looking like a stripper!

Michelle said...These girls are fantastic dancers, but the outfits and the routine are very inappropriate for girls that age in my opinion. I don't even think high school dance teams should allow their girls to dress that provocatively or have some of those dance moves. Call me old fashioned, but ladies should dress and act like ladies, and little girls should dress and act like little girls. Kids are growing up too fast these days and they can show off their talent in more age appropriate ways. Kudos for the great routine and talent, but let these girls be girls for a little longer.

vickie said...I think the kids don't know the outfits look sexual...the mothers of these little girls want to live their lives through them...just like dads do to their sons when it comes to sports....I think little girls should be little girls...and these are not....They can dance but I would rather see tap or modern dance wothout the slut outfit....its a shame....they would look just as cute with black leotard outfit and big pink bows in their hair....

Jen said...I was shocked when I seen the video, seriously what makes these people (the teachers/parents) think that it's okay for these LITTLE GIRLS to dress and dance like strippers?!? It's a pedophiles dream come true.. it's disgusting!! It's sad the parents think there's nothing wrong with it!

I have a 5 year old daughter and I would never allow her to be a part of that! Little girls need to be exactly that LITTLE GIRLS!! Why would anyone think that is appropriate, even the song is wrong!! hmmm, and we wonder whats happening to the world we live in! Where has all the innocence gone? Very dissappointing.

Mark said...Ave2010 nailed it. Those kids should not even know how to do some of those "dance" moves. Pure sleaze and absolutely inappropriate.

Mommieof2 said...Not only is the costume inappropriate, the song that they are dancing to is inappropriate. Parents when we expose our children to this at an early age we open them up to other things. I wouldn't allow my daughter to dance to the song.

mintymocha said...It's clear that someone needs to protect these children because their parents surely aren't!! Yes, the girls are excellent dancers but really, who would allow their little girls to dance like that whether it's on stage or in the privacy of their own homes. Who knows what kind of perverts are watching these kids. Parents, get a clue!!!
