Is This 'Single Ladies' Video Too Hot for Tots?
Filed under: Funny Stuff, Music, Tween Culture
Help us settle a debate at ParentDish: While we all agree the young girls in the video are fierce and fantastic dancers, we're torn when it comes to their costumes. Are their ensembles too sexy for their age or completely appropriate?
The pint-size dancers performed the routine at Wold of Dance Pomona 2010 in Pomona, Calif., on April 10. Unconfirmed reports state that the girls are 7 years old, and World of Dance organizers did not return ParentDish's calls.
If you have a child enrolled in dance classes or if you've been to a kids' dance recital or competition recently, you might find the costumes de rigueur -- not shocking or provocative. Of course, costumes are part of a dancer's artistic expression, adding drama to the performance while allowing them to move. But do prepubescent girls need to express themselves in bra tops, booty shorts and fishnet sleeves?

fran said...This is terrible. This is a tease to any child molester out there. This is why so many children are abducted and sexually assulted...and killed. Its a shame when the innocense of a child is replaced by sexual dancing etc. If something happens to those girls its the parents fault for putting them out there like that. Is having your child doing that worth the risk of danger your putting them in? The girls are talented good dancers. They would have been just as cute with more clothes on and not dancing a sexual dance. Americas morals have went down the toilet!

Sherry Monique said...I guess that people have a need to see young girls in less clothes than most females would wear. Yes the clothes are ok for the music and someone who is older. They could dance -but the moves are fun for a pervert to watch over and over again. I have 2 daughters and would not want them to dance like that and it teaches them that girls are sex objects.....My daughters ballet and dance and never dressed like that or danced like that. America is confused and its up to parents to say NO FOR THIER CHILREN...

lotusofbeauty said...this has nothing to do with tallent. everyone can see that these girls are extremely talented and having fun. the costume and the dance moves are TOTALLY innapropriate! if i caught my daughter looking like that or dancing like that ever, she would not be aloud to dance with this company. whats wrong with the adults who were in charge? or the girls' parents? its not a wonder there are so many teen girls getting pregnant and ending up on welfare. look how young they get started now!

Annette said...You have got to be kidding me! First of all, get this crap off of the internet because all you are doing is exploiting these young girls further. How many sickos are pleasing themselves watching these children dance? And what the hell is wrong with the dance teacher, dance school, parents, etc.. making this dance for young children.
As for the comment about someone being jealous of this video, you are the type of parent that would exploit your child and then wonder why pedophiles are drawn to him/her. I am not saying it gives anyone the right to go after a child, but why put a child out there making sexually suggestive moves?
This trash needs to be taken off the internet. People wake up! Stop making your children grown up so fast and allow them to be innocent children. Parents that are allowing this and finding it 'cute' are teaching your daughters not to have any self respect. What kind of teenager, and young woman are you forming? Do you want your daughters to love and respect themselves, become well educated and self respecting or do you want them to use their bodies to get attention and attract the scum of the earth?

AVMJ said...Not only do I think the outfits are totally inapropriate, the ROUTINE is inapropriate! Little girls grow up fast enough and LEARN too much at an early age; they don't need to learn that type of behavior. For some reason, our society has come to think that it is okay to "sell sex" at any age. What a shame......

The girls more than likely are the subject of their parents and of course the dance instructor.
I would have a word with the dance instructor, asking "do you not have age appropriate dance lessons" and pulled my kid.. It is obvious that the instructor is self centered in his/hers teaching. No classic dance moves at all! well maybe the twirling..
Last but not least. The parents-- they knew the dance routine as the girls were practiced. SO where does the hammer lie..
The out fits may of been ok..had the dance moves been more contained. However, baby Victoria's do not belong any where!!

I am 18 and have been dancing since I was 3 and every competition I have been to there are WAY worse routines with younger girls in skimpier outfits doing way worse dance moves. I do not completely agree with the routine for their age, even though they are amazing, but this kind of dancing at that age is seen everywhere at every dance competition, so i do not understand why this particular group is being scutinized.

lysa said...My 18 year old has been dancing for 15 years and this is an unfortunate example of poor taste. The costumes and dance moves are entirely inappropriate for the age. What's wrong with an age-appropriate song....the dancers can be just as artistic without the provocative moves and the scanty costumes.

Anne said...My daughter is 14 and has been competitively dancing for some years. Even she is concerned about the outfits, especially when on the little kids. They may not realize what the song is about or appreciate the suggestiveness of their movements, but others do. We put them in harm's way when we encourage them like this. And, yes, many parents are hooting and hollering when their little girls dance like that. Very sad.

Nick said...The song is in the Chipmunks Sequel, so as for the song I don't think that the song is inapropriate. As for the costumes, I think they went a little overboard. We are talking about six year olds, of course this is how Brittney Spears went bad.
