Is This 'Single Ladies' Video Too Hot for Tots?
Filed under: Funny Stuff, Music, Tween Culture
Help us settle a debate at ParentDish: While we all agree the young girls in the video are fierce and fantastic dancers, we're torn when it comes to their costumes. Are their ensembles too sexy for their age or completely appropriate?
The pint-size dancers performed the routine at Wold of Dance Pomona 2010 in Pomona, Calif., on April 10. Unconfirmed reports state that the girls are 7 years old, and World of Dance organizers did not return ParentDish's calls.
If you have a child enrolled in dance classes or if you've been to a kids' dance recital or competition recently, you might find the costumes de rigueur -- not shocking or provocative. Of course, costumes are part of a dancer's artistic expression, adding drama to the performance while allowing them to move. But do prepubescent girls need to express themselves in bra tops, booty shorts and fishnet sleeves?

It will depend on if the girls understand that several of the moves & outfit are sex related and if this will effect how they choose to dance/dress in the future.
Do I think it was appropriate for 7yr olds...10 yr olds? No. Will there be long lasting damage? Not if the parents are talking to them, not letting them dress like this everyday, and teach their girls that this is a costume, not how we dress or behave everyday.

Yes many will think that I am too much but the fact is, our society isn't getting any better.
Many will disagree with me, thinking that they are wise. Let me end with this..... the beginning of Wisdom is the fear of the Lord. That is what is lacking. A true love for the Lord Jesus.

Honofre said...Only adults make it inappropriate by their narrow thinking and reading too much into the kids' costumes which is just that, "costumes". All "acts" don costumes, and this is one of thousands! We are supposed to be the adults here. Lets be just that and see the kids and their act as what it was, "entertainment!"

Sue said...The costumes are boarderline. The dance moves and extended crotch shots are unforgivable. There is a certain amount of exposure in modern dance but this is inappropriate and the cheering parents aren't very good parents. Wish I could see these same girls in five years. Will they be dancers or mommys??

I think there are certain parents that should lose their parental rights to their children, and the parentrs of these girls are obviously fitting of that. No child of that age should be taught to dance like that, dress like that. Everyone involved should be punished. This is what's wrong with the world.

It is TOTALLY inappropriate for any child that young to dance that way no matter how cute people think it looks and the instructors should re evaluate there material for the age group. It sends the wrong message to people.

jodi said...No they should not have done this dance in these costumes. Not only that they were not that great. The dance was too fast for them and it seemed they could not keep up. Did one of the mothers happen to see the costumes before this show. Good Lord, this is sad.

Why do we have to analyze and analyze some more? Most of the American public has become prudish, cold, and too worried about being politically correct. Let the girls have fun, as well as being proud of their accomplishments and stop being a bunch of tyrants. Our government is tyrant enough for our society and enough is enough!

Bonnie said...These girls are very cute and talented. It is the costumes that are way to much for these YOUNG girls. I am not sure the parents were thinking on this one. The rountine could have been just as effective with appropriate costumes geared to their age. Sorry parents, but they looked like sluts, and this took away from the routine and their talent. LESS IS MORE!

Terri said...Totally inappropriate! - listening to your children sing along to a popular song in the car or at home is one thing. But putting your precious young daughters out there in such suggestive outfits to perform such a sexual oriented dance for the world to see is ridiculous. The parents and teacher of these girls should be brought up on charges.s. The parents and teacher of these girls should be brought up on charges.

Cute ones why open the door for molesters and any other online sex offeners to try to find. Their dancing was great but taken away from them because of the outfits. Parnets let your kids be kids in our world today and protect and play with them. Don't make them be what you want to be. Try thinking like a kid so they can be kids they only get one chance and they only learn from you.
