Is This 'Single Ladies' Video Too Hot for Tots?
Filed under: Funny Stuff, Music, Tween Culture
Help us settle a debate at ParentDish: While we all agree the young girls in the video are fierce and fantastic dancers, we're torn when it comes to their costumes. Are their ensembles too sexy for their age or completely appropriate?
The pint-size dancers performed the routine at Wold of Dance Pomona 2010 in Pomona, Calif., on April 10. Unconfirmed reports state that the girls are 7 years old, and World of Dance organizers did not return ParentDish's calls.
If you have a child enrolled in dance classes or if you've been to a kids' dance recital or competition recently, you might find the costumes de rigueur -- not shocking or provocative. Of course, costumes are part of a dancer's artistic expression, adding drama to the performance while allowing them to move. But do prepubescent girls need to express themselves in bra tops, booty shorts and fishnet sleeves?

Donns said...I truly agree that it is totally inappropriate! The sexy moves & the costumes. These little gals (I repeat - little gals) are talented and there are much better ways to reveal that. I believe they could be setting themselves up for some very evil consequences down the road. Very sad when we put our children in a place where they could very well lose their innocence. This has exposed them to some very sick people. I'm appalled!

Even though the choice of song was questionable, more age-appropriate choreography and costumes could have displayed these girls' dancing instead of their sexuality. This is what feeds the propaganda machine of those who identify America as The Great Satan.

Chapter said...What amazing young dancers these children are. It's so sad that their parents, and all other adults in their lives, are complete morons. Who is protecting them? Do they even know what those moves mean? Such a sad future for these not-so-innocent anymore prepubescents. And the audience screaming like that...did the dance competition attract a huge pocket of morally bankrupt and idiotic viewers or is this the just way it is today? It made me want to cry.

Suzanne said...I consider myself a really open minded person, but this was absolutely not age appropriate. They are amazing dancers, but they should be doing things like ballet at this age, working on their grace and becoming young ladies. The clothing and music was the wrong choice for girls their age. The parents are only trying to profit from their children's talent. And these girls are extremely talented. They are being taught to move their bodies in ways only a woman should know. When they are teaching these young girls how to move like that, are they also warning them of the dangers that come with it? And they are putting their children in danger, these children are too young and innocent to understand the danger that they are in when they act like that. The church does not motivate my opinion, I am capable of forming one without clergy or devine help. This is just wrong WRONG! I sincerely hope that the parents of these girls read this and take it seriously. I think that the masses have spoken. I just hope the dollar signs they see in their daughters obvious talent does not continue to cloud their responsibilities to their children to protect them.

Soon, the assimilation of sex to beauty is going to get our society to the point where being deemed beautiful is going to mean that women and girls will have to wear dental floss over their nipples to substitute for a shirt. This should not be acceptable but it is and will remain to be since we, the audience, pay attention to it; which leads sponsors to keep paying into it which in turn keeps it going and getting worse. I am sure the pedophiles out there are jumping for joy right now.

I am a dancer myself and I remember plenty of times being placed in scantily clad outfits and dancing in somewhat "stripper" attitudes, but dancers live young, and most people don't understand that. I just commend those young ladies for their hard work and dedication to a sport that is very demanding and open for judgement from people who don't know what the hell they are talking about! Profilers and people hunting down children for their own sick purposes are going to be around to look no matter what our kids are doing or wearing. It's up to the parents to protect them. But if my kids were happy dancing or doing something that was similiar to this, than more power to them.

I hate when people speak out of both sides of their mouths. You don't want a promiscuous society, use your consumer power, use your vote, promote values at home and start showing kids there is an option to all the overt sexuality; like abstinence, education and spirituality. Force the media to show both sides of the coin.

Lizzie said...Although these little girls are amazingly talented, their level of energy and skill should be directed toward a more age-appropriate routine. This is not the type of body language that we want our little girls to use as self-expression. It's one thing for Beyonce and her ensemble to dance provocatively, but I don't think her parents would have encouraged her to perform that way at the tender age of seven. Did this choreographer think that adults should look at little girls this way? It's sad to see them grow up so fast.

This world has to tame down several notches. They are children for Christ sake. The dance instructor should be ashamed for even choreographing such a dance for little girls.

Jeff said...It is unfortunate that the parents of these kids see fit to let their girls where these stripper type outfits; not to mention the performance itself was way too much for kids. The parents might as well buy their kids a stripper pole.
