Is This 'Single Ladies' Video Too Hot for Tots?
Filed under: Funny Stuff, Music, Tween Culture
Help us settle a debate at ParentDish: While we all agree the young girls in the video are fierce and fantastic dancers, we're torn when it comes to their costumes. Are their ensembles too sexy for their age or completely appropriate?
The pint-size dancers performed the routine at Wold of Dance Pomona 2010 in Pomona, Calif., on April 10. Unconfirmed reports state that the girls are 7 years old, and World of Dance organizers did not return ParentDish's calls.
If you have a child enrolled in dance classes or if you've been to a kids' dance recital or competition recently, you might find the costumes de rigueur -- not shocking or provocative. Of course, costumes are part of a dancer's artistic expression, adding drama to the performance while allowing them to move. But do prepubescent girls need to express themselves in bra tops, booty shorts and fishnet sleeves?

Lynemail said...It's not just the costumes, but the provocative hip movements and thrusting is way over the top for this age group. I think the song content and the choreograpy are even more inappropriate than the costumes.

Joanne Brady said...Surely, the parents purchased these inappropriate costumes. This is where we are and I see no return to decency or morality, both ingredients of a sound society. Shame, but parents are responsible for 7 yrs. old.

These are CHILDREN!!! I would have so much preferred to see them at least wear shorts & a shirt covering the midriff

...at the end of the clip the proud idiot who shot this has a logo that says YAK FILMS...I can only imagine that is because after seeing it, it is all you can do to keep from throwing up!!!

Michele said...I have 3 daughters and 2 of them dance. We purposely stopped going to these competitions because of the inappropriate costumes and provocative dance moves on display. Watching young girls in what basically amounts to a bra and boy-shorts is completely inappropriate. Parents have convinced themselves that it's necessary for success...but it is so wrong. If you're starting them off at age 7 like this, how can you be surprised when at age 18 their dance partner is a pole.

I have little girls and if I ever saw them dancing like this or wearing this type of outfit I would pull them out of the dance class and file charges with the police dept, child welfare services and anyone that would be willing to listen. This is clear exploitation of children. Is this dance school trying to turn on pedophiles in the audiance.
The girls are all very talented, that is clear in their movements, but they could have done it just as well without the sexual undertones.

As parents we have to be proactive in not allowing our daughters to perform in the manner that this video projected. It does not take a rocket scientist to figure this out. Why human beings choose to make poor decisions in this way never ceases to disappoint me. Parents continue to make poor decisions and people wonder why pedophiles continue to get away with hurting our children.

We as a nation, need to stand up and say this is not appropriate for young girls. We have sexualized this whole concept with children and then we are horrified when the news says another child is gone missing! Wake up and smell the coffee, this is wrong on so many levels.

IT'S A SHAME IT HAD TO BE POINTED OUT TO THE ADULT(S) IN CHARGE OF THIS ROUTINE...MAYBE THEY SHOULD BE LOOKED AT A LITTLE CLOSER...??
